To many people who become �vegan,� it�s not so much a diet as it is a lifestyle.

This means not only eating cruelty-free foods, but reflecting that philosophy in your everyday

choices and actions as well.

Here at CE, we encourage people to vote with their dollar.

If you dislike the actions of a company, one of the best ways to �fight� said company

is to simply not support them.

After all, without demand, there would be no need to supply consumers.

For those of us who avoid or don�t consume dairy, the vegan food company Daiya provides

numerous dairy-free cheese alternatives, and is well-known throughout the vegan community

given their wide range of products free from dairy, gluten, and soy.

However, Daiya was recently acquired by the international Big Pharma company Otsuka for

CA $405 million.

This speaks a lot about Daiya as a company, whose core values claim to include both health

and animal welfare.

Not only is Otsuka a pharmaceutical giant that creates numerous drugs with dangerous

side effects, but they also test on animals.

To me, if a company tests on animals, they are not vegan.

Details of Otsuka�s Acquisition of Daiya Foods

According to the statement issued on the acquisition, acquiring Daiya �expands Otsuka�s product

portfolio, adding a new category of plant-based products in North America, and provides Daiya

with a like-minded partner with expertise in consumer brands, R&D and manufacturing,

and global markets.�

There�s no question that it was a smart business move for Otsuka.

Daiya has been thriving as a company and the popularity of plant-based diets has risen

consistently over the past decade.

Adopting them will likely be a necessary shift in the future to not only save our environment

and our health but also to satisfy increasing global food demand.

Terry Tierney, Daiya�s CEO, considers the acquisition to be an �honour.�

�With aligned values and vision, Daiya and Otsuka have a tremendous opportunity to bring

the incredible benefits of a plant-forward lifestyle to people around the world,� Tierney

said.

�Our partnership with Otsuka enables us to leverage their expertise and vast resources

to continue growing our line of great-tasting, allergy-friendly food products that have delighted

consumers for more than 10 years.�

His wording seems strange, given that their values are far from being aligned.

Many vegans choose to eat plant-based because they�re interested in improving their overall

health, which doesn�t align with the values of most pharmaceutical companies.

It�s no secret that Big Pharma often creates pills with adverse side effects because they

profit off of sick people.

This is not an industry most health advocates support wholeheartedly.

Additionally, Otsuka tests on animals, which means they are directly contributing to animal

cruelty.

Animal testing is unnecessary, yet countless companies continue to use it because it�s

still considered a �norm� within many industries, including Big Pharma.

As a result, you have animals being brutally tortured by way of drug addiction, skin burns,

crushed spinal cords, tumour growth, forced blindness or deafness, seizures, poison, and

far more.

As a result, people all over the world are boycotting Daiya to show the company that

their recent acquisition is not something they will support.

There�s even a change.org petition titled �Keep Daiya Vegan,� which you can sign

here.

People are claiming that Daiya has �sold out� and that their values don�t reflect

those that are so strongly held by much of the vegan community.

It�s not just the public, even vegan businesses that use Daiya products in their kitchens

are boycotting them.

The Toronto-based vegan pizzeria, Apiecalypse Now, goes through a whopping 20 cases of Daiya

cheese per week, an amount that no other supplier can satisfy.

In response to the recent acquisition, Apiecalypse Now will be donating all proceeds from the

sale of Daiya in their restaurant to a local animal sanctuary because they do not feel

comfortable profiting in any way from animal testing.

This specific pizzeria is the largest single purchaser in Canada of Daiya products outside

of grocery stores.

Although this is only an interim solution during Daiya�s transition period, they are

encouraging the public to sign the petition to stop this acquisition.

This is a real problem for vegan businesses.

To me, Daiya�s actions suggest to the public that �if you don�t sell out, you can�t

become a successful global business,� which is simply untrue.

Remaining in alignment with your values is precisely the definition of success we should

all be pushing.

No amount of money can justify a poor moral decision.

Final Thoughts

This acquisition is an important lesson on being the change.

If you want the world to be a brighter place, full of healthier people and less violence,

then we need to set that example for others.

To me, Daiya sold out to a Big Pharma company.

However, there are many other vegan companies that are still thriving, without compromising

their beliefs.

It�s entirely possible to achieve success without abandoning your morals, and to me,

you cannot be successful if you�re making unethical decisions and going against your

core values.

This could also be seen as a push for many vegans to consume less vegan junk food.

At the end of the day, Daiya products aren�t necessarily good for your body, as they�re

extremely high in fat and full of processed ingredients.

Though they�re certainly better for your health than many animal products, they�re

still not �healthy� per se.

So, instead of supporting Daiya, perhaps try some nut cheeses or other healthier vegan

alternatives instead!

I bought Dragonquest 11

It's been such a long time since I bought one

I was a bit nervous asking for it at the store

eh? I don't know if *all* Japanese are playing it

But there do seem to be a lot of let's plays on YouTube

I watched some YouTube videos but, they were mostly PS4 version

I bought the 3DS version but There's a PS4 version too

No I didn't...

I've been saying this over and over again but...

I don't own a PS4. The last one I bought was a PS2

Eh?? Why don't you buy one for Let's Play Japan?

What's so great I wonder?

I've only seen it on YouTube but the the PS4 version is crazy beautiful

I've only played it on 3DS so far so I was really surprised how good the PS4 version looked

Well...I don't own a PS4 so...

That said, the 3DS can switch between 2D and 3D mode

You can play in 3D

You can also play like the old 2D style games

I think that makes it quite fun

The trailer, the opening movie, and the adverts with famous Japanese people. There's 4 in total. Saw them all.

well, it was nostalgia and also the fact that I can play it on 3DS

It was more like I saw the trailer, got all excited and then just bought it

But maybe they can...

Why? because in the old DQ games you could use restoration magic codes

On the old NES Dragonquest games there was no way to save

So you had to write down a bunch of magic codes

Then type them in letter by letter

That's how we saved the game

On DQ11 you can type in all those old codes

Doing so gets you special weapons and items apparently

And the DQ playing population is bigger than Pokemon probably

I was an elementary school kid when Pokemon came out

So most people who played pokemon are around my age or lower

Well, also people who just love games

the DQ playing population includes people much older than I am too

In that way, the number of DQ fans is probably higher right?

Plus even little kids these days know about DQ

If the PS4 were a version I can bring out and about with me I'd have gone PS4

I don't really have much time to play games when I'm at home

I mostly play games while waiting for things or when commuting

It's way more convenient

Then again, when you compare the graphics, the PS4 version is way beyond gorgeous so...

So yeah...PS4 is amazing right?

The story is mostly decided from the outset

Why I wonder?

For a certain age group DQ was probably their first ever RPG experience

For people my generation our first RPG would have been Pokemon

I think DQ being people's first RPG experience has something to do it

also, because it's easy to understand

It's relaxing to play a game that's simple

Japanese people like the 'Mitokoumon' style stories

In the west the equivalent is probably the superman storyline

Easy to understand. Good triumphs over evil.

With Final Fantasy often you have no idea who's good and who's bad don' cha think?

I really like that one game...the one with Sephiroth

With FF you don't really know who's actually bad

It's like everyone just had their own situations and that's how they ended up that way

DQ doesn't have much stuff like that so it's easier to understand

This is one of the good things about 3D mode

In DQ11, you can now do chain combos with other characters

Since I got a chain combo chance, let's try it

You don't get a lot of chances to do this so the timing worked out well today

For the PS4 version this sort of chain combo effect scene is probably even more impressive

It's fun to battle in 3D and looks good when you level up

So I've bought DQ after a long time away from the series

It's good fun, just like I expected. I've always enjoyed leveling up characters

I truly enjoy working hard at leveling up

In 3D mode you can avoid enemies

Like using you HP up almost completely

So it's become easier to run in, level up, and then back out again

So I'd say the leveling up part is more fun now

If I had one criticism it's that...

Looking at the PS4 version the quality is just way too different to the 3DS version

I think at very least the 3D mode in DQ on 3DS should have been on par with Monster Hunter

but hey it's good fun. Apparently it'll release in the west too so definitely give it a try

I think you'll get pretty hooked

Of this lot I've only met this one guy here so far

By the end you'll have met all 5 of these characters so

Looks like I've still got plenty more to do

Basically this is only the beginning

Since it's coming out in the west eventually I'd love to read your comments after you've tried it
