[TEXT: The Library of Congress, Jefferson Building] We're in front of the Library of Congress, the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States.
The Library represents the belief that knowledge is a global resource that should benefit all.
No matter where you're from or what language you speak, you'll find something to inspire you in the Library of Congress.
The Library provides members of Congress, which is located across the street in the Capitol Building, the federal government, and everyday people with a rich and enduring source of knowledge that informs our laws and inspires intellectual and creative endeavors.
[TEXT: The Library of Congress, The Great Hall, Diana Gibbs, Visitor Services Specialist) We are now in the Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building.
Its marble floors sit 75 feet (23 meters) beneath its stained-glass ceiling.
This grand space is a resplendent display of knowledge, creativity, and industriousness, featuring works by about 50 American painters, mosaic artists, and sculptors.
Here, enlightened scholars and intellectual giants from all over the world are showcased as a source of inspiration for all.
[TEXT: The Library of Congress, Main Reading Room] In 1815, after the original Library of Congress was destroyed in a fire, Congress approved the purchase of Thomas Jefferson's personal collection.
Jefferson had spent over 50 years accumulating books in many subjects and several languages, including science, religion, philosophy, economics, and music.
Jefferson also collected books on topics that would not normally be viewed as part of a legislative library, such as cookbooks.
Today the Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, with over 164 million items in 470 languages, housed on approximately 838 miles (1,348 kilometers) of bookshelves.
[TEXT: The Library of Congress, African & Middle Eastern Reading Room, Dr. Mary-Jane Deeb, Chief of the African and Middle Eastern Division] Hi. Here we are in the African and Middle East Reading Room of the Library of Congress.
It is one of 21 reading rooms at the Library, and we're responsible for 78 countries around the world.
Our particular area of specialization is Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Caucasus.
We have fantastic collections.
Millions of items are in foreign languages in the Library, and there are other reading rooms that deal with Asia, for instance the Asian Reading Room, the Hispanic Reading Room, the European Reading Room, and they all have collections from across the world.
We also collaborate with the World Digital Library, and you'll be able to find collections digitized and available to download, to watch on WorldDigitalLibrary.org.
Even if you can't join us here in Washington, D.C., you can access our online content and be part of a worldwide community of knowledge seekers.
As Thomas Jefferson once said, "Knowledge is power."
