Here's Why Scotty Kilmer is the OG of YouTube Car Repair - Duration: 7:00.

before I started my youtube channel eleven years ago I used to do a TV gig

yes it was called cranking up here's one of my old shirts don't make fun of the

name, I did that on CBS TV for a couple of decades and people are always saying, Scotty

whatever happened to those old videos you did, well I dug around on my messy garage

and found a bunch of these old videos, so here's some old school Scotty

puddles in the driveway under your beloved car from mysterious leaks where

do they come from, pretty frustrating if you've ready spent a lot of money

trying to fix them, well you can stop wasting your money because car care

expert Scotty Kilmer is here to tell us how to do it and you're ready for the

tanning bed or, no this isn't a fashion statement, you wear

these glasses because when you're trying to find leaks you use ultraviolet leak

dye this is a little jar that you just spray about a seconds worth in, engine

oil, transmission oil, power steering oil, and then after you drive it, you use one

of these ultraviolet lights and it will glow green where the lights coming on

when you wear the sunglasses you can see the green a lot, so it really shows up

,yeah and you can't miss where the leaks coming from, now this is a professional

one that I use as a mechanic, but you go to any discount auto parts store today

and they have $20 kits that have a little cheaper light and a little cheaper

sunglasses and a little cheaper dye but it works perfectly fine, and you can find

leaks in anything, in anything, so to even you say air conditioners did I miss

that one, yeah but for air conditioner you can't use this, you have to have a

special container that will go the pressure inside the air conditioning

system but you can buy one of those for about eight bucks too. well okay. we got for our

first caller is Lisa. she's got a question about her brake lights. Lisa go

ahead. okay I have a 1999 S10 blazer and my abs and brake light come on

every so often not all the time, okay what's happening to your car is you

probably have a minor glitch in your anti-lock brake systems, the first thing

you want to do is just check the fluid level in both, if you're just a little

low on fluid both of those lights can come on, now anti-lock brakes are what's

called a fail-safe system, so if your ABS light comes on, you'll just go back to

normal brakes and you really don't have to worry about it unless you really need

any lock brakes and since it doesn't really snow around here and you get ice

on the road, it's not something that's really all that important, if you do want

to know what it is, you'll have to go to a mechanic that has anti-lock brake

software and you'll have to put the computer on and analyze and try to

figure out what's wrong, but it's normally very expensive, if they feel ok

they stopped hard, the brakes don't go to the floor, you can just live with

something like, the next caller is Barry he's got a little bit of a problem with

his first gear slipping I think Barry go ahead, yeah Scotty I enjoy your name

too my dad and first oldest brothers Scott too, well there's a bunch of us out there, yeah

hey listen I've got a 97 Honda passport it's got a hundred eighteen thousand

miles on it, but usually when it's cold taking off, it kind of slips in the first

gear, okay what's happening is your transmission is getting slightly worn

but my advice to do would be, to change out the fluid, put in synthetic fluid

like Mobil 1 automatic transmission synthetic fluid, put a little bit of

cleaner in it like cargo automatic transmission cleaner, drive it about 250

miles, if you're lucky you've got some varnish in there and if it cleans the

varnish and it shifts fine, if you're not I would baby it because rebuilding those

transmissions on those cars is a very expensive endeavor, I've seen it go

more than twenty-five to thirty five hundred dollars, so you might live with

it but try cleaning it first, okay I hope we have as expensive a problem with

Greta I believe I'm pronouncing your name right Greta go ahead with your

question,

I have a 97 oldsmobile and I've had the thermostat replaced and also the fan

motor, but it's still overheating, what you want to do is have somebody inject

some of this ultraviolet dye into the system, and if it's leaking anywhere the

green dye will come out and you know it's leaking somewhere, the only other things

that can go wrong generally are, either your head gasket is starting to go in the

engine which is really expensive and a mechanic can check it with a leak block

checking machine, or your radiator is just old, all radiators today are made

out of plastic and aluminum, the aluminum doesn't rust but it corrodes and when it

corrodes it won't dissipate the heat, so it could be as simple as, you just need

to get another radiator and there's many discount radiator places that you can

get radiators as cheapest about 150 dollars, got a question about air

conditioners timely at this time of the year, from Eileen, Eileen go ahead, hi

I've got a 1994 Mercury Sable and when I brought it to the air conditioning place

they told me that there was a clogged

hose, okay and but they wanted to charge me $1500 to get this air

conditioning fix, well it's more than a clogged hose for $1,500,

air conditioning work unfortunately is just educated guess work,

and they keep putting less and less analytical equipment on them some cars

only have one fitting, so you can only take the low pressure reading and you

don't even get a high pressure reading, so a lot of guys will just replace

everything, my advice is, go to another place have

them analyze it and then have them explain what they can do, you don't need

to use new parts you can use remanufactured parts, and a lot of times

you can flush the system out instead of replacing parts, so find a good AC

repairman and have them give you an estimate but just realize it's always

going to be an estimate, you're never going to know until it's done because

all the parts inside are interrelated and since mechanics don't have x-ray

vision, they can't see inside they're just guessing, always reassuring to hear

from an expert that it really comes down to guest work, yes it does with anything I never

know if something's fixed until it's finally fixed, well given the problem that Joe

has with his transmission I guess here then, Joe go ahead, hello, I've got to 2002 chevy

Silverado pickup and has a tow mode button on the end of the gearshift, put it in

the tow mode, and it says in the manual that I can drive it in D and drive, but I

might want to put it down in three, what should I do

yeah it depends on what you're towing and the type of terrain that you're

driving in, if you're just driving on normal flat stuff around here, like going

to Galveston or going out to San Antonio, hey you can just leave it in D,

if you're going to go up hills and you're pulling a lot of weight, put it in

three and then it won't go into overdrive and it won't strain the

transmission as much, very good Scotty go ahead and put your bono glasses back on

there, thanks as always Scotty, if you've got questions for Scotty you can check

out our website and send your letters to this address, so if you never want to

miss another one of my new car repair videos, remember to ring that Bell!

The Big Problem with GDI Car Engines - Duration: 5:31.

rev up your engines, shoeshine boy says what's up with oil dilution with direct

injection engines, okay direct injection has to spray fuel

directly into the cylinders, you take a regular injection car, that thing might

have a fuel pump that puts out 56 pounds per square inch pressure, those direct

injectors some of those things are 500 psi pressure that they spray into the engines,

it's a lot more pressure, you put all that extra

pressure in, of course it's gonna strain the piston rings and it's gonna blow

some by and it will be diluted gasoline will get into the engine oil, especially

as they age and especially with people that don't maintain their cars perfectly,

it will get the oil too dirty, the piston rings

wear and then all that extra pressure is gonna throw gasoline into the oil and

it'll dilute it, especially when a lot of them are turbocharged too, which

puts even more pressure into it, denton says Scotty what are your thoughts on the

GM plants closing, well don't say I didn't warn people about it, I told people

for years don't buy Chevy Cruzes, don't buy a

Impalas their junk and now it's come back to bite them in the rear end, you know they

took the government money and then what do they do, they screw the American

workers over by shutting their factories down and keeping all the other

world ones on, realize the GM last year sold more cars

in China than they did in the United States they're all made in China in their

factories there, just trying to move the stuff over there, and the Impala and the

Cruze their not gonna make any more their some of the worst cars they ever

made, especially the Cruze that was an absolute piece of junk,

I've had customers sue them under the lemon law and win, I got one costumer with a Cruze

and he has a picture of Mickey Mouse in the back window and I said, what's

that for, he said this car is so Mickey Mouse I decided to show everybody by

putting a Mickey Mouse picture in the back of the car, they made junk and it's

biting them in the butt, that's just the way that it goes, David says Scotty what

do you think about an 06 Marque with 64 thousand miles for 4,500 bucks, it's

perfect on the interior and exterior, if it can really be proven that it's only got

64,000 miles go ahead and buy it, those things can

last two hundred thousand, two hundred sixty four thousand miles they

can last a really long time, you're never gonna find another one

with that low little mileage, but first get proof that it's actually the real mileage

because a lot of people lie cheat and steal, you can go to a junkyard buy a dash

for 60 bucks, put it in the car and it looks

like that's the mileage, so you want some proof of car inspections, the mileage, you

know you want some solid proof that that's the real knowledge, don't go by

what people say, people lie a lot, DW says hey Scotty

my trailblazer makes a rattling noise when you take off, it stops until it gets

up to speed and I could smell oil but I don't see any leaks what's your thoughts

first thing is you got to figure out where that's rattling is coming from, it

could easily be the substrate inside your catalytic converter is breaking and

that's the catalytic converter rattling, because when you take an off it can

rattle, but once you get going fast there's all this pressure of the exhaust

gas flowing through and it'll push it against the side and it won't rattle anymore

and if that's the case, you can live with it as long as it runs okay, if it's

the engine rattling as you take off, that generally means the timing chain is

worn or you got a problem the cams are worn, and that's real expensive and you'll

probably would want to put that kind of money into an older vehicle like that, you

got to pinpoint the noise first and catalytic

convertible they're pretty easy when they're rattling, crawl under it and get a

rubber mallet and whack the catalytic converter

if you hear it rattle you know that it's coming apart

inside, Mr. hulk abs says what's with GM actuators going bad, cheap design, it's all

plastic junk, I've had more people, like they'll come to me and say, oh it's

driving me nuts, the air conditioning on my side the driver is hot but on a

passenger side it's freezing cold it works great, well that's cuz the actuator

on the driver's side is broken, they used this plastic junk, hide it in the

dash and then when it breaks you got to go out, take the entire dash apart which

costs a fortune if you're gonna pay somebody to do it, and they gotta buy the

new actuator and put it in and then reprogram the computer, it's just

ridiculous they're making them that way and that's one reason that their

shutting their factories down, people are sick of buying a cheaply made product

that cost a fortune to fix and their wining that people don't want to buy

their cars anymore, they did it themselves, they made their own garbage

and then they try to blame it on market forces, yeah it is a

market force that people that are buying the stuff are smarting up and

not buying the junk that they're trying to sell to them, Ohare says hey

Scotty love your videos, I have a few questions to ask, first I want to change my

brakes, how do I figure out what size I need and where do I get the

Akebono pads, okay well you can buy them online or buy them anywhere, go to a good

auto parts store, I'm not talking about chain

auto parts stores, discount ones, go to an actual one like I use one around here

that's called Bap Geon, I say I want Akebono pads and they get

them for me, they cost more but they're great pads

you tell them the year, the make, and the model and they'll get you the right ones

and they're very easy to replace on that vehicle, changing brake pads Scotty

Kilmer and my video will pop up, show you how easy it is to change them, that's one

of the easiest cars to do and you can do it yourself, you know there's a lot of

stuff like that, that you can do it yourself, the only thing is, you want quality

parts and you're doing a smart idea, buy the Akebono pads, their quality parts

they're gonna last longer you'll be happy, so if you never want to miss
