Welcome to Part 2 of the first annual End of the Year Game of the Year awards here on
the Backlog Battle YouTube Channel!
The EOTYGOTY awards have been going on for several years now on the Backlog Battle Podcast
- available on iTunes, Spotify, PLEX, Stitcher, and Google Play, by the way - and I wanted
to bring a version of this award show to YouTube!

The End of the Year Game of the Year awards often have strict criteria on a game's inclusion
to that year's awards.
For our inaugural awards, we're only going to be considering the games that I've reviewed
on this channel that were initially released this year.
This means that while I may have talked about playing games like Spider-Man PS4 elsewhere,
they must have been reviewed on this channel in order to qualify!
Also, technically Ys VIII doesn't count, as it was initially released in 2017!
Finally, keep in mind that this list is only my opinion and that it may not necessarily
reflect the score that I gave them in my review.

Let's begin the countdown to the End of the Year Game of the Year 2018!
In a year packed with open world games containing weird bugs and oddly inconsistent co-op experiences,
none have made me smile and have more fun than Far Cry 5.
Yes, it's a little bit derivative of previous iterations of the series, but the setting
of Hope, Montana, the villains in Joseph Seed and the members of his cultish family, topped
off with a legitimately fun co-op experience, makes my time with Far Cry 5 some of the most
fun I've had this year!
In fact, it's probably one of the most fun co-op experiences I've had in a long time!
I've been chomping at the bit to play through it again, and I won't hesitate to do that
if anyone asks me too!
Even though the way Octopath Traveler tells its story prevented better character development
amongst party members, it still provided an incredible hybrid of old school/new school
JRPG gameplay that captivated me for a very long time!
And while I'm not a fan of grinding per se, the battle system in Octopath Traveler
is so enjoyable that I obsessively powered up my characters even beyond the individual
characters' endings!
Again, I will stress that its storytelling could've been better, but damnit all if
I wasn't invested in each characters' stories.
Well, maybe except H'aanit.
Sorry H'aanit.
Probably the best rated game of November, I got hyped for Tetris Effect when I heard
that Tetsuya Mizuguchi was working on it.
A Tetris game from the creator of Rez Infinite and Lumines?
Sign me up!
Naturally, what we got is a game that shakes up the Tetris formula in a few different places
that turns the act of playing the classic puzzler into an experience unlike anything
you've ever had before!
It's also the motion friendliest VR game I've ever played, as Tetris doesn't really
require much physical movement after all.
What a feast of sight and sound this game is!
Sorry Yakuza 6!
While the aforementioned game provided a fantastic way to close out Kazuma Kiryu's story, Yakuza
Kiwami 2 is the full realization of what a Yakuza game should look and play like using
the Dragon Engine.
Not only was Yakuza Kiwami 2 able to focus on retelling one of the best stories in series
history, but it was also able to create more opportunities to tie itself with the prequel,
Yakuza 0.
Add to that the return of the Hostess Club mini-game and a refined version of the Clan
Creator and a whole bunch of other new features, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 easily stands out as my
favorite experience from Ryu Ga Gotoku studio this year!
And finally, my End of the Year Game of the Year for 2018 is…
There have been a good number of co-op experiences in video games released in 2018, but none
were as engaging or as rewarding as Monster Hunter World!
I lamented upon its release how this potential End of the Year Game of the Year candidate
came out so early in the year, and I'd hoped that I'd remember it by the time awards
season came around.
But thinking back to how much fun (and frustration) I had when trying to defeat monsters like
Nergigante, my experience with Monster Hunter World is one of the things that I'll always
remember whenever I think about 2018 in the future.
It's a game that defied expectations and has since become Capcom's best selling game
of all time, and proof positive that sticking to your gut feeling and carefully acting on
it pays off big time!
Finally, Monster Hunter is now a mainstream success, and we've all got the scars to
prove it!
Congratulations to Monster Hunter World and the rest of the runners up for The End of
the Year Game of the Year 2018, and thank you, dear viewer for making this year of video
games amazing!
