CS Discoveries: Drawing in Game Lab - Part 1 - Duration: 2:39.

I'm Amara. I'm a student at Dartmouth College and I love to code and dance.

People always thought I was good with technical stuff, with computers and

phones and then I did Girls Who Code and yeah seeing other girls interested

and realizing that it was more accessible than I think I thought was a good

gateway into computer science.

Welcome to Game Lab!

Game Lab is a tool that let's you draw pictures, design animations, and build your own games with code.

To create these animations and games you'll be learning and using the programming language JavaScript.

Game Lab is designed with the beginning programmer in mind,

but it also includes many powerful features to help you bring your creations to life.

Let's get started!

In game lab, you can add lines of code to

your programs by dragging blocks out from the toolbox and snapping them together.

Then click the 'Run' button to see the result.

The output of the program will show up on the left in the display area.

If you prefer, you can also type the commands yourself.

Either way, you write your code you can always flip between block mode and text mode.

In fact, you can work in text mode and drag blocks out to insert the text.

If you make an error, you can use the blocks as a way to check if it's the right command.

If you want to get rid of a line of code, just drag the

block off the screen. You can also delete it from the text.

To start out, you'll be drawing with simple shapes like rectangles and ellipses.

That's a fancy name for an oval.

To change where shapes show up on the screen, you can change the numbers given to each command.

The first two numbers set the position of the shape.

The last two numbers change the size.

Let's check out an example where we want to move our rectangle down the screen

and then make it wider.

In Game Lab, the 'X' and 'Y' position starts at the top left corner.

If we want to move the rectangle down the screen, we actually need to increase the 'Y' value.

To make the rectangle wider, we'll also need to increase its width

Learning how to use new commands doesn't have to be trial and error.

If you hover over any of the blocks, you can read more about how to

use it and see detailed examples of each command.

I don't know what I want to do after college, but I know that computer science will give me a lot of

opportunities to work in many different industries which is why I like it so much.

Deep Sea Survival Horror Game! - Narcosis (Playstation 4) [First Impressions] - Duration: 26:01.

What's up, everybody I'm Cronocyde and welcome to my first impressions video of narcosis for the PlayStation 4

So I got a free key from the developers of this game. I was super excited when I got the email

So this game came out in?

2017 for Steam and Xbox one

I got pretty good reviews, but it didn't get the exposure that the developers wanted out of this game

It seems like an hour game with a survival elements. So I'm super excited about this. So without further ado my friends

Let's do this. Osia. Nova was once-in-a-lifetime

They're breaking new ground making something meaningful

mining methane hydrate frozen beneath the seabed

There's alternatives but none so plentiful. It's clean and safe. I

CS Discoveries: Animating Sprites In Game Lab - Duration: 1:27.

You can animate with sprites too!

To do this, you'll need to update their properties inside the draw loop using the counter pattern.

For example, this program creates a sprite called "mySprite" then, inside the draw loop, it uses

the counter pattern to increase the sprite's 'X' position by one in each frame.

This makes the sprite move smoothly across the screen.

Adding a second sprite to a program is easy.

You just use the create sprite command again.

This program animates two sprites called sprite1 and sprite2.

'sprite1' uses the counter pattern to move across the screen by adding 1 to its 'X' property.

'sprite2' moves down by adding 1 to the 'Y' property on each tick of the draw loop.

These sprites have lots of other properties, but our program only needs to deal with the ones that are changing.

Sprites already helped you write more readable programs

and they are going to be extremely helpful and powerful tools for

making fun games and animations, so stay tuned!

Rhythm & Shooter Game Mod for Nintendo LABO Toy-Con Piano - Duration: 2:31.

This is a rhythm and shooting game mash-up for Toy-Con piano.

Player 1 on the left controls the character above using the motion controls of the L controller.

It can shoot a sound missile by pulling the trigger button (ZL) while at certain check points.

Player 2 must protect themselves by hitting the right piano key, before it hits the bar at the bottom.

Player 2 wins by scoring 10 points before losing all their lives.

Player 2 can also shoot back with the black keys,

and if hit, Player 2 wins on the spot.

Movement logic for Player 1 is expressed like this.

Tilt to the right to increase the count and tilt to the left to decrease the same count.

Then it's connected to Light move node for output.

Next is the sound missile mechanism.

We want a single button press (ZL) to initiate the sound missile to move across from point A to point B,

then make it come back to the start line.

I explained this logic in my previous video.

Please check that out for more detail.

Lastly the game functions.

The logic to tell if the right piano key is pressed or not is easy.

When the missile hits the bullseye at the bottom, if the correct piano key is pressed,

then it proceeds to the Counter node on the right for the scoring.

If not, it goes to the Counter nodes on the left and takes 1 life.

Player 2's Life gauge is expressed by 3 Light up nodes.

Each of the Light nodes are connected with the Counter-Trigger node set to 1.

When this value is no longer 1, the light goes off.

Then the NG logics from earlier are connected to each of the Counter-Trigger nodes by 0.

In order to take life one by one, The second Counter-Trigger node is triggered

only if the first light is gone.

Similarly, the third light only goes off if the first 2 lights are gone.

You can change the difficulty by tweaking speed.

Counter-Hold nodes attached to Light nodes are responsible for controlling speed.

Smaller numbers here are faster.

This is our 2nd match with the speed increased for Player 2.

CS Discoveries: The Draw Loop in Game Lab - Duration: 2:59.

Animated movies create the impression that characters are moving smoothly, but

if you slow them down enough, you'll realize there are lots of individual images.

Each image is just a little bit different from the one before.

Speed them back up, and your eyes are tricked into thinking you're watching real life motion.

A very simple example of this effect is a flip book.

The key to animation, whether on paper, or the computer, is that part of the drawing is changing over time.

An easy way to achieve a change is to use the random

number command to generate a new random location, size, or color for the shape we're drawing.

Here is a simple program that draws a single rectangle with a

random 'X' position and a random 'Y' position.

If we run and reset this program over and over again, we can see that it draws the rectangle in a new position each time.

But that's like a flip book with only one page!

To create real animations, we need to be able to string these pages of the flip book together.

In Game Lab, we'll do this using the 'draw function'.

The 'draw function' is special in Game Lab.

The commands inside of the 'draw function' are run line by line from top to bottom,

but once the computer reaches the end of the commands

inside the draw function, it jumps back to the beginning and repeats the

commands over and over again as long as your program is running.

Because the code in the draw function repeats in a loop, we'll just refer to this as the 'draw loop'

Let's move our rectangle inside the 'draw loop' and see what happens.

WHOA, so many rectangles!

We can see that a rectangle isn't just being drawn once anymore!

Game lab is automatically calling the commands inside of the draw loop many times a second.

In this program, that means that a new random 'X' and 'Y' location is

generated and then a rectangle is drawn over and over and over.

You can place as many commands as you like inside of the draw function.

For example, let's choose a

new fill color before drawing each rectangle by placing a fill command inside the 'draw loop'.

Instead of always choosing the same color, we'll randomize by replacing

the red value with the random number command.

So in every frame of the flip book, the computer is picking a new shade of red and setting that as the fill color.

Then it picks a new 'X' and 'Y' value and draws a rectangle with those values.

In a typical animated movie or flip book, you don't continue to see all

of the drawings that came earlier in the animation.

Instead you have the illusion of a single shape or character moving over time.

You'll discover how to make that happen with the 'draw loop' soon.

Preview - Best Spider-Man game ever? (English subtitles) - Duration: 9:08.

While I am recording this it's around150 degrees celcius in my living room.

Oh well it's 30 degrees...

I didn't like the thought of putting hot lamps in my face just to tell you about Spider-Man

don't worry though. Because I will still tell you. But only in a different way than we usually do.

Spider-Man was a name making the rounds in terms of rumors around the E3 of 2016.

And what we got to see when it was finally announced... Was everything I ever wanted from a Spider-Man game.

A great studio, no movie tie-in and a original story.

With this story the developer said to not only focus on Spidey but also the guy behind the mask Peter Parker.

They have been teasing Spider-Man with great footage for two E3's now.

From a game, which on paper could very well end up being the ultimate Spider-Man game.

Let's fast forward to July 2018...

Spider-Man was present at San Diego Comic Con. Here they showed of a brand new trailer.

This trailer focused on the narrative and some the villains you will encounter.

Released for one reason: to get us hyped for this game even more. And I must say it worked!

Now it was finally July 25th...

The day I would finally get to play Marvel's Spider-Man.

But before I will dive in the preview. I would like to point out some of things that were told before I played

With this information you will be able to check if the feeling that Insomniac Games is trying to create

resonates with you. Or in this case me. Critic, Gamer, hyper fanboy...

Someone from Insomniac Games told me he loved Spider-Man ever since he was a little boy.

And how making a Spider-Man game totally makes sense for them

because they see things from previous games like Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive

since these game focus very heavy on traversal and crazy gadgets as well.

During this preview I will refrain from any sort of spoilers in terms of the story

Something they really stressed during this presentation is the duality of the Spider-Man character.

He said often times when Spider-Man is winning Peter Parker is losing and vice-versa.

Which I think is really interesting and totally fits with Spider-Man as a character.

What I can tell you about the story is this.

You play a Spider-Man that has been a superhero or friendly neighbourhood if you will for 8 years now.

Then all of a sudden very casually all of the villains that are already caught by Spidey

are being named one by one and the game explains that they are locked on The Raft

The Raft is an underwater prison which was also featured in Captain America: Winter Soldier.

However one villain still remains at large

one who up till now manages to never have been caught

one who's name that will not be said for the sake of spoilers.

The preview started with a scene in which Peter gets a call from the police scanner

and he heard that the villain he has een chasing for 8 years now is at it again...

And one thing I reallly liked about this scene. Is that it totally reflected the duality of Spider-Man.

It's a scene where a camera goes through Peter Parker's room

while it's going through the room you see all sorts of post-its with to lists for Peter.

But also some jars containing money to save up for certain things.

And one of the jars is labelled "New laptop" After which you will see a laptop with a broken screen.

Which makes you think ah yes he really needs a new laptop.

And just before Peter puts on his Spider-Man suit...

the camera switches to focus on an enveloppe on the floor.

The text on the envelope reads "Overdue" with big red letters.

This immediately shows that Peter Parker has plenty problems of his own

because appearently he struggles with paying his rent.

This scene really captures that sense of duality mentioned in the presentation earlier.

Once this cut scene was over it was time to finally start swinging

Because to put it quite bluntly if the web slinging doesn't work the game would suck.

Thankfully the web slinging felt great.

There was sense of freedom and real control.

After a while I kinda thought that doing all the slinging with only R2 felt somehow off...

I thought it would maybe make more sense to actually to a combination of both R2 and L2.

But please keep mind I am not a game designer...

But seeing how fast I got in the flow of the web slinging I think my nagging about the R2 was for nothing

Because you really like you are Spider-Man

When you sling next to a building Spidey will run on the building

Heck there even is a way to vertically walk on buildings!

And if you would climb a tall building first and then dive down it would give you tremendous speed.

Of course there is also a way to web zip to buildings or objects.

When in combat you feel like a real acrobat doing over-the-top crazy moves

Which again gives you that feeling of "Yes I am Spider-Man"

The way Spidey controls feels great and very fluid.

I didn't have all moves or gadgets at my disposal. But still I felt great playing Spidey.

With each attack your "focus meter" fills up. When mine was full I was able to heal my character

I did this by pressing down the D-Pad. I can't rule out that other functions will follow.

The gameplay when doing a more stealthy approach also feels really great.

The way you crawl through ventilation shafts

Or the way you silently yank an enemy up while using your webbing

The developer also mentioned that there will be a eloborate skill tree in the game

and that later on in the game you will be unlocking several other gadgets and moves

I didn't get to try out a whole lot of gadgets in this playthrough

however one gadget was available fairly early on.

This gadget created some sort of web explosion and got enemies sticking to walls in no-time.

I am very curious what else Insomniac has cooked up since they are known for crazy ideas.

What I also thought was interesting in terms of gameplay

the same philosophy still seems to apply as in you play as both Spidey and Peter Parker

I was playing a scene as Peter when he is not saving the city he works in a lab

This wasn't the most impressive or interesting scene by any means

I had to play some sort of mini game in which I had to solve a puzzle of some sorts.

But what it does is giving you the complete experience of being Peter Parker.

This is the same lab where the new Spider-Man suit get created

Which sports white accents in Insomniac's iteration of the web crawler we all love

Along the way you will be able to unlock many different suits

Some of these have already been revealed as being part of the Day One DLC.

I even played a segment of the game as Mary-Jane Watson

The thing I liked about MJ

She is nog longer being portrait as "Damsel in distress"

She now works for the Daily Bugle as an investigative journalist

So basically this Spider-Man universum now has it's own version of a Lois Lane

It's revealed that MJ and Peter are no longer together However she does know his secret identity...

The developer told me that you will find out later in the game why they broke up

and also how they might end up together once again.

The piece of gameplay as MJ was pretty boring But it changed the pace a little which was welcome

I hope segments like these give the developer a chance of developing characters more

It's unclear to me if you play as MJ more than once and if perhaps other characters will be playable as well

I do think it could interesting from a narrative perspective

So yeah the game plays pretty great

the web slinging is awesome

And yes it looks gorgeous

It has great sound design and you can discover all of Manhattan looking side quests or collectables.

But... If you ask me when the iconic humor of a Spider-Man is not present

in either a movie, cartoon or a game well then it's not a Spider-Man product.

And this product has... [hold on to your seat!]

Great humor and has the typical witty Spidey jokes.

I think the actor Yuri Lowenthal really brings live to Spider-Man.

I was instantly hooked on the humor in this game.

I remember this one instance when a character told Spidey about something like a police gala

and Spider-Man thought he was being invited to it. To which the girl replied with one the best jokes I think...

"Do you have a suit in black and white?"

In case you don't get it, this joke refers to the symbiote Spider-Man suit which of course is black and white

I don't know if this might be a clue to Venom actually being in the game

the only I do know is that the developer teased with a "very Sinister Six"

And there also was another joke which I remembered from the preview

it was being made when one the bad guys was hanging upside down and Spidey asked

"Should we kiss now?"

Something that clearly references the infamous kissing scene from the first movie.

This was when Spider-Man was hanging upside down and then kissed Mary-Jane Watson

This makes it evident that developer knows their source material and are basically fans themselves.

In terms of humor this game for now is solid.

I am curious in what way they will be able to explore the duality of the character even more.

And of course how the story will continue to unfold.

I am also very curious about the role that Miles Morales will play in this game

because including this character may point to a fact that Peter Parker dies eventually as he did in the comics

I have read rumors online that this will be a trilogy. Well if that's the case it looks of to a great start.

Because so far I am really impressed with the overall presentation of this game.

Marvel's Spider-Man will release on September 7th exclusively on PlayStation 4.

And I can't wait to continue playing this game!
