My name's Guy Kesteven. I've been a professional bike tester for 21 years
and today I'm at Coed y Brenin trail center riding the Beast route with Brian from BKXC
and a bunch of pretty vocal sheep and I'm riding two bikes today. The
Orange Stage five and Stage six Both 29 ers Stage six has 160 mm fork 150 mm
rear travel Stage five 135 mm travel at the back 140 mm fork. Okay on the Stage 5 bike
which is the 135 mm rear-end 140mm front you know and it's a
single pivot bike and that comes with certain cynical statements from other
people you know they're obsolete, how you possibly have a bike design millions
of years old, but I was trying to describe to Brian (BKXC) it's like nobody goes up to
crocodiles and goes you're a million years old, you're obsolete you could be bearing
live young, stop putting eggs out! They're still top of the damn food chain, and
Oranges are still top of the trail bike food chain if you just want something
super tough and involving and playful and these Stages bikes have got that in
spades. Actually not ridden the only 29s before it's a bit worried that back end
would be obviously flex especially now there's quite a lot of that'll cut away to
make them light. Well if it is, it's certainly not getting in the way of the
ride. That cut down 36 fork on the front with 140mm travel on a fork
that can be configured to 180 that is so on point
especially with 30mm Race Face rims making that Minion
front tire that 2.3in nice and square, so plenty of capacity in it
plenty of support through the sidewall and you've got a big 800mm Renthal bar "yes you
hustler" 50mm stem so slightly longer stem than the Stage 6 as
well but all just hangs together so well Mitch travel bike then those are still
pretty slack and spicy 66.5 had 74 feet such a great night for hoppin and poppin
around off hello moment youichi out you just feel
so much great feedback three feet you can tell you exactly what that some
actually tie carcass is doing exactly what grip you've got left what the bikes
going to do next and the way you move a pump just amplified by that single
swimmer or whatever you do the brake levers or however you put the power into
it this is 500 grams why you put the
complete bike then the big six points like this I'm feeding in power stop any
changing around bill that pill first stage 5 is work that okay finally many
get the stage six are frying using a lot of it so much so what do we know you
straightaway sides are a bit sturdy you can feel that pH are on the back doesn't
roll this quickly the high roller funky a wide trail calculates two point
four in the back she's on five on front but that means yes already I can feel
there's more grit the more muted trail feel guys are sucking up more static you
got more shock travel 57 mill stroke sound 50 Mill straight into longer
back-end for 50 I'm corporal five cuz it's a split design actually feel
stiffer it much longer same super low 55 on bracket height they
haven't brought it any higher to offset next to trouble still the ground hugger
yeah it's like a head angle degree slacker you can feel that 12 if you pull
50 more longer in the wheel way the bike is built a lot more settled between
ready for that pound he'll be gentle hey stick you down over here and what's
really interesting about this shakes is that with a couple of sections downhill
but mostly climbing coming up I've been playing about with the shock a lot of
compression damping and appreciate and despite the fact I'm not running similar
stag and actually lower tire pressure and much lower shock pressure this bike
definitely feels stiffer and more locked in on the pedaling you know just even
the smallest indicators like this shuttle feels firmer upshifts it's more
of a plunk so pilot eyes are definitely slower roll in it's half a kilo heavier
so it needs more effort it actually feels the sharper and more pebble
positive bike the more aggressive overall when you know that fit directly
in with the usage spectrum that orange you put out for it this is their
burliest bike short for downhill bike you can actually feel that when you
start attacking the downhill sections as well it's definitely the more lean down
LLL be get orientated back some more racy feel hasn't got
I kind of cat-like swim thing wait that was so obvious on the fibers and
throwing your hips around there's much more businesslike much stiffer much more
aggressive and that is right not is wrong just interesting they get such
very different feels very very similar platform
I've complete thing about these mofos reviews I am thinking this and saying it
hasn't going along and already very clear
Chevette tweaking and tuning but those great bikes and vocal suits very
different riders it's hold the line very very exactly protectively Stage five but
can definitely see why Brian tons are getting beaten about more on this
ironically despite the fact got more trouble I'm at 36 thought this girl's
seems off my hands are already feeling it but you watching where the front
wheels going on this I can totally put it where I want it which is really
useful on sale haven't ridden for governors out long you're gonna have to
do more with this shock to find a sweet spot it's not quite as forgiving
definitely worth getting the little aches to to not at least kids is rather
cool until he can buy trail you because it's a shop that really rewards
from tuning maybe add some volume fans gives us a bit more linear naturally for
that long-wheelbase my slack angles then you can really carry that speed the
whole bike is so stable so it's great to have that little shop gem and then the
way it's pumping off the backside you can't really see that I feel that
obviously but I can it's a real drive out the back of it tacking trails like
this hey I can sing like Brian was showing so much speed on it it's
absolute freight train when you do get it set out the correctly so the big day
planned out tomorrow no down yeah can I hit there early on the dawn raid see how
stages five and six G on the biggest mountain whales does before the curfew
it's horribly windy so I don't know how am I gonna get down before I scare
myself stupid so apologies it's windy and I'm Wendy see how it goes
Stage five six again this morning okay do that better than I was expecting I
hate exposure that's the uncertified and helpful bike
here Brian's been going the extra bit travel on the six holding
away every time I look up I'm not loving the fight
he's uncatchable on that thing know for sure you care for more new suspension
action you know there might be a bit of doubt if you stand up pedaling you don't
have to lock out on just suck it up seriously it's the right choice
he's it so visceral so vibrant it's a freaking fun the pump the pool is
stupid body English to hang your ass out do all you can shake you can get this
bike responds well do all that kind of you know I haven't riding just loves it
just thrives on it how do you get around the orange jet when it's got the extra
speed of the 2019 wheels whoa rooms are taking a beating down
here ha not only just such a broom involving bike to play on you just got
all that orange signature toughness you got that crippled powder-coated frame
take an absolute beating over the years a single pivot bearing super tough easy
to replace these time replacements for whatever does go wrong and just the fact
you know the bikes are so well quality check in the factory boiling after heat
treating after heat treating and then back in the factory just alignment check
all the way because that single pivot is they can't just get away with slack
tolerances everything has to be totally on point
but it's gonna work together that's why it feels so smooth why they last so well
this is some geological adventuring going on that create the extra volume XD
shop give that a little mom carry more gentle speed sense away the damping
stays consistent Oh Elliot roll a lot better break
well way ha ha that was a lucky moment Dean hey Fitz take five since we
generate a lot of luck today definitely got away with writing down pasta and I
probably should have done on an average dice roll and maybe it's that
flexibility in the rear end it just kind of makes it find its own way
hello prize being Tamara but he's the one who's had a puncture this
is more forgiving ride I'll endure slope this thing's awesome really coming alive
yeah that's the line ah I love a bike too makes you feel like a really good
writer nice definitely the case mistakes like
how the fact is falling today 1.4 mil and bolt in and welded and handsomely
well adapted to seriously rocky trails yeah he's Snowdonia so that's two epic
days in Wales on two epic bikes
iron steaks five mistakes six
share a lot of similarities that practicality that toughness you can't
handle fully it also surprisingly different six very much the hard punch
in hardcore eraser five more of a long leg let's get a how cool trail bike but
slightly more forgiving slightly easy to set up slightly lighter so take your
orange by the way you're gonna get melting right
