well we got a lot of movement a lot of traffic right now because the hearing
after six hours has just wrapped up and if we're lucky we may see the Deputy
Attorney General and the FBI director heading down that way where we've got a
bank of cameras a one theme that really dominated the hearing today were these
outstanding records that show the FBI's intelligence activities prior to July
31st 2016 that is when the Russia collusion case officially opened those
records were first under subpoena in April and the subject of a very testy
exchange earlier today so your statement that I'm personally keeping information
from you trying to conceal information here the boss mr. Rose is dying that's
that's correct and my job is to make sure that we respond to your concerns we
have sir now I have appointed mr. Laos who is managing that production and my
understanding is it's actually going very well sir so I appreciate your
concerns yeah and I think the House of Representatives going to say otherwise
but your use of this to attack me prided you son wrong what was not consistently
from Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee today is that they were really
on the offensive they were doing what they could to reaffirm the
decision-making of the FBI director and the deputy attorney general rod
Rosenstein here's one exchange mr. riah are you one of those 13 angry Democrats
that my Republican colleagues keep referring to well congressman of course
I'm not working on the Special Counsel investigation but you're the head of the
FBI are you are you are you a Democrat did did the president reach over to the
Democratic Party as as presidents have and pick you because he wanted to have
Democrats in his administration congressman I'm trying to do this job
politically and not consider myself I do not consider myself an angry Democrat
you came quite car you had them at no I'm not you're not you're not a Democrat
thank you I shouldn't maybe I should have gone to that question mrs. Russell
mr. Rothstein are you a Democrat I'm not a Democrat
and I'm not angry okay so that was a clear reference to
one of the many Trump Trump wheats that we've had on the subject a couple of
sort of housekeeping matters on agent struck agent struck a number of times
during his closed-door my interview yesterday refused to answer questions
and what we learned today is that one of those questions had to do with his
contact with the co-founder of the opposition research firm Fusion GPS that
was the firm behind the dossier and we also learned that Special Counsel Robert
Muller has taken specific steps to see if agent struck made any direction chose
any sorry decisions or took the Special Counsel investigation in a direction
that really was a reflection of the political bias that is seen in the text
messages chef Katherine in the middle of all of this it's my understanding the
House Republicans passed a resolution that's right this is a non-binding
resolution it calls on the Deputy Attorney General to provide the
remaining records that are sought by these three committees House Judiciary
House Intelligence and has oversight that was a vote 226 Republicans a to 183
Democrats one of the sort of testy moments in the hearing came with a
congressman darrell Issa and he asked the Deputy Attorney General look if we
go forward on contempt and we want to pursue it in the district court in
Washington will you throw up any roadblocks and here that is do you
believe that you have the ability to be above the law something the American
people do not know sir I do not good since you do not believe that I will
take that as if you're Eldon I haven't happened it will go forward you said no
and yes or no was fine that you don't believe you're above the law so that
really will come to some kind of resolution probably the week of July 6th
because they're going to be heading into the congressional recess but again they
just want to emphasize it's a non-binding resolution but the idea is
to really send a political message and set the table for some Republicans who
believe that contempt or even impeachment is
it's necessary or even justified in this situation show catherine herridge on
Capitol Hill Thank You Catherine chair recognizes the gentleman from South
Carolina mr. Gowdy for five minutes Thank You mr. chairman the Russian
investigation has been going on for almost two years now
special counsels investigation has been going on for over a year now for most
Americans is important to know what Russia did to our country in 2016 and
with whom if anyone they did it when a foreign state interferes with our
democratic electoral process it should be chance of a lifetime
for a law enforcement agent to investigate that except apparently the
one that was actually picked to investigate it that was Peter struck FBI
agent Peter Strahm was picked to lead the FBI's investigation into what Russia
did and July of 2016 it was a counterintelligence investigation begun
in late July 2016 and he was leading it and about the exact same time he was
picked to lead it this dispassionate and fair FBI agent
was calling Trump a disaster destabilizing for the country I'll leave
out all the F adjectives he used to describe that I'll just go with disaster
and destabilizing same time his FBI lawyer girlfriend Lisa Paige was telling
him he was meant to protect the country this neutral dispassionate FBI agent
said I can protect the country at many levels same time Peter struck who was
picked to objectively fairly neutrally look in until the Russia investigation
was talking about an insurance policy with Amy became and Lisa page and the
event Donald Trump became the president all of this was happening at the same
time Peter Strock said he could smell the Trump support in southern Virginia
all this was at the same time that this FBI agent said a trump presidency would
be effing terrifying and that it will never happen no no we'll stop it
so while investigating Russia and their attempt to subvert our democracy may
have been important to the rest of the country and wasn't all that important to
about half dozen FBI agents and lawyers who were assigned to the case for them
it was an investigation to stop Donald Trump which then brings us to May of
2017 in the appointment of special counsel where we find Peter struck again
this same supposed to be dispassionate neutral
fair FBI agent you would think you'd be really excited about investigating what
a foreign power tried to do to this country but you would be wrong again for
Peter struck at precisely the same time that Bob Muller was appointed precisely
the same time Peter struck was talking about his unfinished business and how he
needed to fix and finish it so Donald Trump did not become president he was
talking about impeachment within three days of special counsel Muller being
appointed three days that's even quicker than MSNBC and the Democrats were
talking about impeaching within three days the lead FBI agent is talking about
impeaching the president so this is where we all were two years into this
investigation or a year and a half into the presidency we're over a year and the
special counsel you have a counterintelligence investigation that's
become public you have a criminal investigation that's become political
you have more bias than I have ever seen manifest at a law enforcement officer in
the 20 years I used to do it for a living and for other DOJ employees who
had manifest animus towards the person they were supposed to be neutrally and
detached ly investigating Democrats are using this investigation as a
presumption of guilt which I find astonishing and in the long run for the
health of this Republic I would encourage them to go back to the
presumption of innocence that we used to hold sacred there's a presumption of
guilt there's a desire by Democrat senators to fundraise off of your
investigation more than 60 Democrats have already voted to proceed with
impeachment before Bob Mahler has found a single solitary damn thing more than
60 have voted to move forward with impeach
and he hasn't presented his first finding so almost say this see mr. Rey
mr. Rosenstein I realized that neither one of you were there when this happened
but you're both there now Russia attacked this country they should be the
target but Russia isn't being hurt by this investigation right now we are this
country is being hurt by it we are being divided we've seen the bias we've seen
the bias we need to see the evidence if you have evidence of wrongdoing by any
member of the Trump campaign campaign presented to the damn grand jury if you
have evidence that this president acted inappropriately presented to the
American people there's an old saying that justice delayed is justice denied I
think right now all of us are being denied whatever you got finish it the
hell up because this country is being torn apart I would yield back mr.
chairman either the witnesses cared respond to
the I would simply respond to Scottie I certainly share your views about those
text messages and nobody is more offended than I about what's reflected
in those messages with regard to the investigation I've heard suggestions
that we should just close the investigation I think the best thing we
can do is finish it appropriately and reach a conclusion and I certainly agree
with you sir the people should not jump to conclusions without seeing the
evidence I've been the victim of fake news attacks myself so I'm sympathetic I
agree with you sir that there's been no allegation made by Department of Justice
or the special counsel other than what's reflected in those documents that are
filed publicly the charged folks nobody should draw any conclusions
beyond those charges hello again and Happy Father's Day from Fox News in
Washington President Trump is back from his summit with North Korea's Kim
jong-un and is already taking on his next big challenge the Department of
Justice and Specter general issued a report that is sharply critical of how
the FBI conducted Clinton email investigation and the
president says that undercuts Robert mother's probe of collusion with Russia
and obstruction of justice joining me now from South Carolina Republican
congressman trey Gowdy chair of the House Oversight Committee mr. chairman
before we get to the IG report I want to discuss how President Trump and his lead
lawyer Rudy Giuliani are using the IG report here's the president linking what
the Inspector General found in the Clinton investigation to the Muller
investigation of him I think that the report yesterday maybe more importantly
than anything it totally exonerates me there was no collusion
there was no obstruction mr. chairman does the IG report exonerate President
Trump well it certainly helps him Chris I mean
keep in mind the same people the same players that were involved in the in the
Clinton Pro later moved to the Russia probe John Brennan who said he should be
in the dustbin of history Jim Comey who said impeachment was too good of a
remedy Loretta Lynch who wanted Hillary Clinton to win and then we've got Peter
struck and Lisa Paige the two FBI employees Chris and this is what's most
important to me those two presumed and pronounced
Hillary Clinton's innocence before her investigation ended and they presumed
and pronounced Donald Trump's guilt before the investigation even began so
when you have that pervasiveness of bias yes it's going to help the person who is
complaining about the investigation on the other hand Robert Muller was not
part of the Clinton investigation Peter struck was fired by Muller as soon as he
found out about those very biased and damaging texts and of course we don't
know what Muller has found in the last year in his investigation so again I
have to ask has president from been exonerated I clearly understand your
point that there was bias in the FBI but has he been exonerated on allegations of
collusion and obstruction well well it part of that depends upon what you view
the Muller probe as now you mentioned collusion the only person in the
universe claims to have evidence of collusion his
Adam chef and unlike any other secret he's ever had he's actually kept this
one he's never told anyone what evidence he has so there's no evidence of
collusion obstruction of justice Chris good luck having your star witness being
Jim Comey in any prosecution from shoplifting to obstruction of justice
good luck if that's your star witness for me the Muller probe is about what
Russia did in 2016 and who if anyone they did it with so that's what I mean
when I say Muller probe and I hope he does write the definitive accounting of
what Russia did but there's no evidence Donald Trump did it with them and Jim
Comey would be about the sorriest witness that I can imagine the
prosecutor could have I find this very significant because you have not been in
the tank for President Trump on all of this not now no no I understand that I'm
not saying you are now but I'm are you saying this morning that Donald Trump is
off the hook and the Muller investigation well I don't know what
Muller has I do know this that bias is so pervasive and everyone who's ever
stood in front of the jury and had to explain it away will tell you it is the
most miserable feeling of the war in the world and I have never seen this level
of bias so you have Peter struck who can't think of a single American who can
vote for Donald Trump and you got Peter struck who says we'll
stop it the campaign and the presidency will stop the campaign and then if that
doesn't work the day after the election he's talking about impeachment so how
would you like that to be your lead investigator two weeks after you're
assigned to look into what a foreign country did to us the only thing he can
think to talk about is an insurance policy to keep Donald Trump from winning
and then he says we'll stop it I assumed the we is the FBI so how would you like
if you're Bob Muller to present that case to a jury you are co-chairing a
hearing on Tuesday where the Inspector General Michael Horowitz who issued this
damaging report will appear what are the main questions you want to ask them
whether a bunch is a 500-page report and the good news Chris is Michael Horowitz
proved what we wanted the FBI and the DOJ to do which is that you can have an
investigation that is fact centric and fair and even-handed there are a lot of
questions I have for him number one you know the Hillary Clinton failure to
prosecute was predicated upon two things number one that her emails were not
exposed to foreign actors there's some evidence that that's not true number two
that there was no evidence of intent well of course there's no evidence of
intent you didn't bother to ask her you went into the interview knowing that she
was not going to be charged so I think some members will ask about that a lot
of members are going to ask about the bias the same team that exonerated her
implicated him before the investigation began and I suspect some members will
ask about the coziness between the FBI and the media while the FBI is very
critical as you pointed out and we're going to get into it in more detail
about actions taken by Comey and struck and others here is his overall judgment
on the final conclusion of the Clinton investigation I want to put this up on
the screen this is from the IG we found no evidence that the conclusions by the
prosecutors were affected by bias or other improper considerations rather we
determined that they were based on the prosecutors assessment of the facts the
law and past Department practice and here is current FBI director Christopher
Rea this report did not find any evidence of political bias or improper
considerations actually impacting the investigation under review so when they
say the final judgments yes there may have been biased but that didn't affect
the final judgments are the inspector general Michael Horowitz and Christopher
Rea the current FBI director are they wrong well I'll say this why did Allah
run a Lynch asked it be called a matter and not an investigation why was Cheryl
Mills in the room when the target was being interviewed why did you write an
exoneration memo six weeks before she was interviewed why did you start
planning your press conference two months before the investigation
was over here's where I depart from from from Chris Rae I don't think it's my job
to prove the bias impacted the investigation I think it's his job to
prove that it did not here's what I know they exonerated her before the interview
they said she did nothing wrong before they even bothered to talk to her and
this same group said Donald Trump should not be the president and or should be
impeached before the investigation even began if that is not textbook bias which
is the prejudging of an outcome I mean that's what bias is we are prejudging
the outcome we're prejudging her innocence before we talked to her were
prejudging his guilt before we even begin to look into the fact pattern
that's bias and yes it impacted the outcome she the most important element
is intent that's what they all told us she did not have the intent to commit a
crime the best way to figure that out is to talk to her but they went into the
interview Chris saying the only thing she'll be charged with is maybe lying to
us if you're Donald Trump or if you're any other defendant in the country how
would you like that deal we're not going to charge you with anything as long as
you tell us the truth that is blanket immunity and everyone in the country
would like that as they go into an interview with the FBI now a couple of
top Republican leaders House Majority Leader McCarthy Senate Majority and
leader McConnell are saying given all of this and given the fact that the that
the Muller investigation has gone on for more than a year it's time to wrap it up
it clearly is putting a cloud over the president do you agree with that I think
it's putting more more than just a cloud over the president I think it's putting
a cloud over the entire country this is a unique case Chris it is a
counterintelligence investigation that's become public most of them do not is a
criminal investigation that has political overtones most of them do not
combine the two it is a public counterintelligence investigation with
political overtones this is not your traditional investigation so I would
encourage Bob Muller keep doing exactly what rod Rosa Stein hired you to do Bob
Muller did not volunteer we're here because wrote
Roza sign decided we need a special counsel do the very best you can with
the evidence and the witnesses you have but understand that this is being used
by political enemies to hurt Donald Trump Adam Schiff wants to be the
chairperson of the House Intelligence Committee Nancy Pelosi wants to be the
Speaker of the House they won't Bob Muller to do what Peter struck and
Hillary Clinton could not do which is beat Donald Trump so just be aware that
you're being used would be my advice to Bob Muller I've got about three minutes
left I want to get I'm gonna ask you for four quick answers should based on what
you've you knew before and what you know now from the I G's report should Hillary
Clinton have been charged with a crime I need to interview her effectively I need
to ask her those questions on intent we know she lied we know she's concealed
evidence we know they destroyed F and it's those are all circumstantial
markers of intent so I would need to interview her without going into it
knowing I was gonna clear her like the FBI did should Comey and Peter struck be
called to testify before Congress yes on what issues
well Peter struck you named it the highest level of bias I've ever
witnessed in any law enforcement officer and Comey and the words of my Grandmamma
has some explaining to do he's having a hard time getting his stories to match
up Horowitz was very critical of him and and deservedly so finally where our
House Republicans in your your demand you're called for the Department of
Justice to share more documents especially on this question of the use
by the FBI of a confidential informant to penetrate the Trump campaign and also
do you believe that some of your colleagues have suggested that Deputy
Attorney General Rosen Stein threatened the house and threatened staffers for
demanding those documents well I wasn't in the room for that January meeting
I've been in the room with some other meetings where tensions ran really high
we had a meeting Friday night under the heading of
minor miracles you had members of the House working on a Friday night Paul
Ryan led this meeting yeah Devin newness Bob Goodlatte myself and everyone you
can think of from the FBI and the DOJ and we went item by item on both of
those outstanding subpoenas we either have compliance we have partial
compliance or we have non-compliance and Paul made it very clear there's going to
be action on the floor of the house this week if the FBI and DOJ do not comply
with our subpoena requests so rod Rosenstein Chris rape you were in the
meeting you understood him just as clearly as I did we're going to get
compliance or the House of Representatives is going to use its full
arsenal of constitutional weapons to gain compliance this is too important it
was too important before the IG report the IG report has even heightened the
need for us to understand what happened in 2016 so the new guys can either be
part of the cleanup crew or they can be part of the cover-up crew and I would
encourage them to be part of the cleanup and very briefly sir in the areas where
you see non-compliance and you might see action on the floor this week that's on
what area it would be FISA abuse it would be a little bit on the strop page
text we're a little miffed that we read that most damning text the same time you
did well we've been asking for it for a long time so Devon's called subpoena is
is largely most of the issues from with Devon subpoena and not chairman
Goodlatte and that's FISA abuse and it's what led up to the Russia probe and and
Chris and rod or there is no ambiguity the Speaker of the House was really
clear you're going to comply or there's going to be floor action and I think
they got the message and floor action would be a what the full panoply of
constitutional weapons available to the people's house including contempt of
Congress that would be among them yes sir I don't want the drama
I want the documents and I think that Chris and rod got that message contempt
of Congress just means we're going to be talking about this six years from now
I don't want that I want the documents I don't want the drama and I don't want
the floor fight but they need to know that we're willing to do it and unless
they were in a different meeting than the one I have never seen Paul Ryan as
animated as I saw him Friday night he is sick and tired of the delay and he
communicated that point very effectively chairman Gowdy thank you thanks for your
time always accepted to talk with you and I got to say you had a lot to say
today thank you sir happy Father's Day Thanks same to you
sir
