"Fun isn't something one considers when balancing the universe."
It was a big, BIG weekend at the box office as Disney and Marvel broke all
kinds of records with the global debut of their mega-mashup
blockbuster 'Avengers: Infinity War.'
Directed by the Russo brothers, 'Avengers: Infinity War' represents the most
ambitious collection of superheroes ever on the big screen and comes as
Marvel Studios — led by Kevin Feige — celebrates the tenth anniversary
of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Here, we take a look at the movie's box-office achievements.
'Avengers: Infinity War' earned $258 million in its first weekend -
beating out fellow Disney movie 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens,'
which made $248 million.
In fact, here's actual footage of fans charging into theaters this weekend.
'Infinity War' debuted to $382.7 million overseas for a global blastoff of $640.9 million —
$100 million more than the previous record holder, Universal's 'The Fate of the Furious,'
which made $541.9 million. BUT because 'Infinity War' doesn't open until May 11
in China, 'Fate of the Furious' still boasts the top
international opening with $443.2 million.
The first installment of 'The Avengers' was the previous record holder for top
superhero launch in North America with $207.4 million,
while Warner Bros. and DC's 'Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,' which brought
in $422.5 million, held the global crown.
'Infinity War' took in $83 million on Saturday, well ahead of the previous record holder,
Universal's 'Jurassic World,' which raked in $69.6 million.
The latter had the advantage of opening in the heart of summer, when
kids were out of school. 'Infinity War''s Friday haul, meanwhile,
was $106 million, the second-best showing ever behind 'Force Awakens'' $119.1 million.
'Infinity War earned $69.2 million on Sunday, well ahead of
'Force Awakens,' which brought in $60 million.
'Infinity War' scored the highest debut ever in South Korea with $39.2 million,
Mexico with $25.1 million and Brazil with $18.8 million.
In India, the film made $18.6 million - making it the biggest debut for a Western title ever.
Among other notable accomplishments, 'Infinity War' was the No. 2
debut of all time in Australia with $23 million, behind 'Force Awakens.'
Leading all foreign markets with $42.2 million was the U.K./Ireland, where
'Infinity War' now boasts the third-biggest launch of all time,
including the biggest Saturday ever.
So what's causing all this success? First, the Marvel brand itself.
'Infinity War' opened almost exactly 10 years after the Marvel Cinematic Universe
kicked off with release of surprise hit 'Iron Man.'
That's a lot of world-building. And not only did many of the 18 MCU titles released
before the latest 'Avengers' score runaway box office...all but one (the first 'Thor')
received some variation of an A CinemaScore. 'Infinity War' itself was rated an A.
'Black Panther,' meanwhile, got an A+, and analysts agree that Ryan Coogler's
film, released in February, lifted 'Infinity War' to even greater heights.
The first big-budget Hollywood movie to feature virtually an all-black cast,
'Black Panther' debuted to $202 million in mid-February on its way to becoming
the top-grossing superhero of all time in North America with $688 million.
Box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of comScore puts it best:
"To call 'Black Panther' the best lead-in ever would be the understatement of the year..."
In fact, moviegoers created their own 'Black Panther'-'Infinity War' double feature
over the weekend. 'Black Panther' moved back up the chart in its 11th weekend
from No. 8 to No. 5, something Disney didn't even anticipate. Our guess is...they'll take it.
Moving up the release date from May 4 to April 27 also helped slow any spoilers
given that the movie's international run was always intended to begin April 23.
And finally, the big 'Infinity War' debut is another reminder of Disney's
domination and marketing prowess. The studio now has
nine of the 10 biggest domestic openings, not adjusted for inflation.
Okay, so tell us - did you see 'Avengers: Infinity War' over the weekend?
Did it live up your expectations and are you surprised, or not,
by all of the of records film has broken?
