I am here today in this how to start homeschooling video to help guide you
through some really essential steps that you'll need to take very beginning of
your homeschooling journey so that's coming up next
okay hi everybody welcome to the carriage house if we're meeting for the
first time I am Becca we are a homeschooling family of five and I've
been homeschooling for a little over four years now I have a one-year-old is
seven and eight year old and also just really quick this channel is centered
around the hearth and home so all topics that are related to home
schooling those are going to be posted every Tuesday morning 6:00 a.m. North
America Central Time another home related topics such as decorating or
gardening or organizing all those kind of things anything that helps to enrich
our home life those will be posted on Thursday mornings at the same time all
right so let's get started on what you came here for and what you need to do to
begin homeschooling right now the very first step that you're going to need to
take is to find out what your state laws are and with regards to homeschooling
now I live in the US but if you live in another country then I'm sure it's it's
similar you're just gonna find out what your laws are where you live and what
the requirements are for homeschooling alright but if you do live in the u.s.
then I recommend you go to HSN org and on the first page of their website it's
gonna it's gonna show on you know what state do you live in and you're gonna
click on that and pretty much it's going to tell you everything that you're going
to need to do and there's tons of other helpful information on that website as
well now and where I live I have five options there are things like IPI which
is independent private instruction which is what we do there's also I I pee or
there's homeschooling with an annual assessment so there's just going to be
different options and you you're gonna have to just find out what's gonna be
best for your family and what your state requires it may seem overwhelming at
first but it even if you do have to report it sigh
it is so laid-back and it it's you some of these moms who do that reporting they
end up coming really good friends with the people that they they do this with
they actually may go to Starbucks or something and sit down and and just you
know and it might be good to to even get some feedback on certain things so you
know if you if you see that filing a form or have to report it has nothing to
do with you know assessing your type of your homeschooling style or or what kind
of or how you're teaching or anything like that it's just basic simple
reporting but so it looks intimidating at first but it really isn't okay so
that's the first step now the second step that I would highly recommend you
do is do a little bit of research on on what kind of styles of homeschooling
there all right now because that that may have a lot to do but type of
curriculum you're gonna want to choose I talked about styles I mean there's just
just different ways to approach homeschooling and again it might affect
what kind of curriculum you use if you are going to purchase a curriculum so
I'm going to go through all the major styles I'm sure there's some out there
they I may not mention but I'll go and kind of talk about it a little bit and
then I'll tell you guys what we do will works for us there's Charlotte Mason
there's Waldorf there is Montessori there's classical
there's unschooling there there are ways to approach homeschooling with more of
like a religious background depending on what your religious or spiritual beliefs
are and there's a collect it come school which is what we do which we pull a
little from all of them so I'm just going to go through each one just give
it like a brief detail of what each one is about and then I recommend you going
into and doing some research on your own and and you may end up being you may end
up like okay I want a I want to go with a complete Charlotte Mason type
curriculum all the way there all of my subjects or you may decide you want to
do more of the Waldorf strictly Waldorf everything all subjects is Waldorf or
you may be like a player like we tend to be more of a
Charlotte Mason inspired type of home school where we pull a lot of her
ideology into our home school we also have a good spiritual religious
background too and so doing daily devotional you know all that so we tend
to be an eclectic tight but let me go through here and I like I said I'm just
gonna hit on the highlights of each one and what they stand for but I encourage
you to just do some research so Charlotte Mason is about educating the
child's not only mind but the whole being of a child so it's all about
creating good habits and the environment is very essential into child's learning
and children's narration is very she's really into that so that's more of a
Charlotte Mason style the Waldorf is kind of like a holistic approach which I
think it's a beautiful way of learning and the child learns certain certain
subjects based on his or her eighth her age and what they're going through and
how their body's developing and also according to the seasons and cycles of
life so I love the Waldorf a whole audiology we try to incorporate it a
little bit I recommend going to pepper and pine on her YouTube channel and she
does a really good she has a lot of good information on how to create a and what
curriculum to use if you decide you want to do all Waldorf
there's also Montessori that's more of like a just very hands-on and a child is
you're kind of focusing on the child learning a particular skill first went
before moving on to the next skill so whenever the child is so instead of
pushing a child to stop what it's doing and going on to something else you kind
of wait till it's you know you kind of go with a child's own rhythm and and let
them learn that particular skill no matter what age or you you're not trying
to get them caught up with anybody else or you know it's revolved around that
particular child so and there's also unschooling and eclectic and and then
there's curriculum out there for or if you want to do you know based on
religious beliefs you can you could pick out curriculum that is
strictly for your religious belief - so just do some research on it and you and
your family your children may already fall into a natural rhythm of one of
these so you're not going to really try to be particularly you know you may just
naturally fall into once you're going to gravitate towards that okay so after you
have kind of done some research on ways to approach homeschooling and just the
different styles then this is when you're going to want to find out what
what you're going to teach and what curriculum you're going to use or teach
your child so for the real core subjects like reading writing and arithmetic we
need these subjects to build a good solid foundation for everything else I
chose to buy a purchased curriculum for these three subjects so I did a lot of
research in the beginning and there's a lot of good programs out there but I
attended I decided to go with Saxon phonics for my well fit for your
kindergarten all the way to second or third grade I did do a video on a Saxon
review and how well it's worked for us so you can check out that video if you
haven't already and it and also Saxon the scripted so in the very beginning
especially when I was new to homeschooling I it tells you exactly
what to say if you want to follow that so it's just kind of nice to fall back
on but again you can watch that video and then for math I chose Singapore Math
and again I did another video on that and you can watch that video if you want
to dive deeper and and I can I'll do do a review on that and it can talks talks
a little bit more what's that Singapore Math is about but I highly recommend
these these two programs and I encourage you to go to rainbow resources because
that's where I get all my curriculum from also real quick Singapore Math
isn't available on rainbow resources you would have to go to Singapore math but
again there's so many things out there and just I encourage you to do some
research and they've got just so many options and so many may take you some
time to choose but maybe find somebody to watch the kids for a evening or a
weekend while you go head up to the - like the bookstore
or or a library and just get you a cup of tea and and do some research on on
what what you think would be best for you and your child or children but the
other subjects now this is where you can really get creative on I feel like
history geography a lot of kinds of subjects art poetry that's where I
really love and you can really get creative with and but this is the part
where I feel like a child can really and the others too but you could really get
find what your child really likes and what subjects and for example in history
doing ancient Rome you know they may find that they're you know you're if you
have a son like MA or daughter or they may feel like they really are into like
a whole gladiator thing and you that's when you can break off from what you're
learning from you know maybe it's a book that I'm recommending and do you know go
more in detail on and do more teaching about gladiators and find all this
information about in it it's just really it's just that's one thing I love about
homeschool and you can see what in there your child's eyes things that really
interest them and it's so good to grasp that and take that and and feed off of
that and he can you know what you can learn more about it and go really into
detail and and whereas you can't do that in a public school it's like a one size
fits all type of thing so if you see something and you know whether it's
geography or through history or through fossils or rocks or space or there's so
much out there or a foreign language even if you see something that they
really are you know interested in and just make sure you make sure you pay
attention to that and then and you can set a time you know and then you can
feels like a little unit study on that particular subject that he's the he or
she is fascinated about but I'm gonna recommend three resources that we use
that we really love and that I've been using them for over four years now and
I've haven't changed into be anything else because
just there's a lot of value in these the very first book that I use
it's basically my backbone to my homeschooling and it's what you're it's
what your series so what your first grader needs to know what your
kindergarten needs to know and it needs to know meaning you know it's
homeschooling it's great because I was going a lot about flexibility on the
things that they need to learn but this just helps it just helps give you it's a
guide and I just highly recommend this book we've used it from the very
beginning what your kindergarten eads to know and I'm not sure how high up it
goes I know it goes up to fifth grade it may go even go beyond and it just builds
upon each other and the one thing I like about these books as they they it's a I
consider it a living book living book meaning that when you read it it's it's
so alive you it's almost as if you are talking to a child
so it's not just a book that has all these boring facts and stuff and I'm
sorry but it talks in such a way where it's very lively and you can just read
off of here and it's written as if you are talking to a child and we use these
books we don't necessarily don't use them for math and writing and everything
else as much because we have our other programs for that but I do go through
and look in here and look in the math sections like oh okay
maybe we should probably focus on some of this for maybe a few days or but as
far as history geography visual arts it it just goes into some really good and
good information so I highly recommend these and I'll put I'll put all this
information in the description box below the second one book that I recommend
home learning year by year and I kind of use this in conjunction with what your
what your series so they're a little different but they're also very similar
in some ways but it shows you again it goes by what your different you know
what your child they recommend them learning that
particular year and gives a lot of extra resources to like online resources or so
I kind of do a combination of the two but and the last one that resources that
I highly recommend and it is online and their actual lesson plans that you can
print off this one for example is in these and these are coordinates core
knowledge not common core but core knowledge and you can go for example
this one is is a third-grade level but these are written by teachers
specifically by a chart Charlotte charter school in Glendale Arizona and
it goes in and talks about as mister fab so it's teaching the this is teaching
how to classify animals and mr. fab is how a child can remember the five groups
of vertebrates but it just goes in and you have a lesson for today
it tells you how many it says length of unit it's gonna be eight eight weeks I
believe you can go by this exactly or you can kind of use it and build upon
and do it things your own way but it has each lesson for the day the lesson one
would be vertebrate classification introduction and these resources are all
for free and it just I highly recommend I've been using eight and they have
resources for each grade level so just highly recommend these so the fourth
stat the last step is just something to consider how you're gonna set up your
your homeschooling as far as as far as like the yearly calendar and weekly
calendar which is kind of fun you can you know are you gonna take more than a
classical approach and have all this whole summers off or you can you can go
and think about the holidays if you want to take more time off in the holidays
and you know and all that or you might be like is the only homeschool Monday
through Thursday and we have Friday's off so again check with your your stay
requirements and if you're doing some kind of reporting they may have you know
certain hours or whatever that you you have to have but again don't be
overwhelmed by that it okay alright so these are just the four tips that I
recommend to get you started but there's so many more fun things to plan like
you're like what what what space you're going to use for like a home school room
or a home school area ways to organize and I did do a video on decorating if
you want to watch that music is a little loud because like I'm still
experimenting with with all the camera equipment lighting and music and
everything so but there's also a lot of good YouTube videos out there so you
need to check out mine or other people's just to kind of get some inspiration on
how you might want to set up your school room that also field trips and or co-op
groups or there's just so many things but it's really fun and if you just plan
ahead and you try to stay organized just as much as you can it doesn't have to be
perfect then it can really be just if you can really be successful with it
it's not going to always be perfect but you know nothing ever is so so I hope
you found value in this video please either email me or comment below if I
missed something or there's an area where I wasn't quite clear on and I will
definitely answer your questions and again this is just some suggestions
that's work for us and thank you so much for coming back if you're already
subscribed to this channel and thank you so much if you are watching for the
first time and if we'd love to have you subscribe if you'd like more videos like
this and just always give it a big thumbs up hopefully not a thumbs down if
you didn't like it just don't do it just give it a thumbs up if you found this
video helpful in any way alright I wish you guys a wonderful day
I'm currently videoing this in the spring and I am about to put away all my
technology stuff and go outside and get some fresh spring air or maybe do some
gardening I encourage you guys do do the same or get two home
school planning that's also a good thing you could do start doing though alright
you guys have a lovely day and I hope to see you in the next video bye
