kind of surprise and I come join his gameboy games they're very simplistic

surprise them have the music the system is pretty good I think that's what

surprised me the most is the music for game

I don't know the kick is like

while they seem easier in this version

NES Mini Classic Edition Review + Game Footage - Duration: 14:49.

oh by the beard of Zeus by the hammer of Thor Anthony and Cleopatra I got my

hands on an NES mini classic edition can you believe it I actually managed to get

my hands on one of these suckers I thought I was only gonna have the SNES

mini classic edition and now we have both anyways as you guys know these

things are incredibly hard to find because Nintendo didn't release you know

a good amount of them everybody freaked out you know and we're so just furious

with Nintendo and you know Nintendo slightly made up for it and released a

little bit more but not as much as they should have and that's a huge

disappointment you know not only do they sell immediately but a lot of the people

that bought them are resellers who are not gamers but they know that

everybody's in nostalgia mode and they decided to you know pick these up and

sell them for ridiculous amounts of money on eBay way beyond the price what

it is which is absolutely ridiculous but anyways I'm really excited to have one

of these and I'm really looking forward to opening this up and see what it has

to offer and what games it offers I already know but I want to share my joy

with all of you so we shall see some game footage let's get to it

so first I want to go over the box itself which is very cool look and I

love the artwork on it and you know it's basically the same as the original box

at the Nintendo Entertainment System originally came in back in 84 very cool

looking except the only difference is it says games are included 30 built-in

games as you can see this is translated into three different languages and

there's link right there from The Legend of Zelda freakin awesome and I mean

again everything about the the artwork on this box is just unbelievable I love

it and it's a pretty decent list of 30 built-in games so I'm gonna go over them

right now balloon fight oh that's such a good one Bubble Bobble yeah blow them

bubbles Castlevania very scary Castlevania 2 Oh

a sequel that's even scarier so Castlevania 2 Simon's quest donkey kong

Donkey Kong jr. the baby haha yeah double dragon to the revenge dr. Mario

yeah Excitebike oh yeah nothing like revving up the engine of a dirt bike

yeah final fantasy the very first one gallica

ghosts and goblins grotty asar Gradius however you pronounce it ice climber Kid

Icarus Kirby's Adventure Mario Brothers it's a Mario Megaman 2 Metroid Ninja

Gaiden or Gaiden pac-man the original pac-man well actually not the original

it first came out on Atari but but yeah the first one punch you out featuring

mr. dream startropics super see also known as super contra don't know why

they call it super seen but okay Super Mario Brothers Super Mario Brothers 2 3

all three Mario's how about that tech bubble

I'm not a fan of sports games I never been a fan of that game but okay cool

and The Legend of Zelda and The Legend of Zelda - a link oh I almost said a

Link to the Past I mean The Adventure of Link so there

you go we are gonna go over some of the stuff it comes with as you can see NES

classic edition stupid warranty we don't need that check out what else that comes

with this is a poster which is really really cool

as you can see yeah and tail entertainment system now you're playing

with power since 1985 it's it's like the old advertisement for Nintendo back in

the day I mean that is super cool but it's not just a poster it is also

instruction booklet on how to set it up so which is very cool and I think I'm

gonna just like I said about the poster that came with the SNES classic edition

I'm you know I'm sure that I'm gonna be getting you know this specially framed

so yeah I got I'm gonna take good care of that so there you go so now we're

gonna go over the system itself and I am actually going to compare it to the

original system so as you can see it's you know it's much smaller very light

compared to this big one and it's a bit heavier and as you can see it's got the

the power and the reset button the difference is with the buttons compared

to the original system here is you know the buttons are are a little harder on

this one they're not soft like like this one so as you can see because of the

there's a where you put the HDMI cable and this is where you put the power

outlet and yeah basically basically the same as the original that's where you

put the AV outlet the power cable and that would that would be the on and off

switch so all that stuff you know comes with a controller which is very cool

it's very much like like the original controller and I will compare those to

you know the dev and says yummy you know it looks and

feels like like the original NES controller you know the soft start and

select button here's the original controller and I'm sure you could tell

just from watching that the controller on the original is very long this one is

incredibly short my only disappointment just like everybody else has been

freaking out about is how incredibly short the controllers are yes they did

sell extensions for them but that's such a hassle to have to buy those but it's

okay because I've got this BAM

yeah wireless mini classic controller as you can see it comes with the plug now

you plug into the system and what's cool about this plug it's a USB cable so I'm

pretty sure you can play this on your computer which is freaking awesome this

thing does not open up like the original system this is where you put the

cartridge so it does not do that on this system yeah that's it let's get to some

gameplay

you

you

you

my only thoughts that are a complete letdown about this whole thing is about

the shore controllers even though you can buy extensions and all that stuff

also here's the thing I mean I'm satisfied with every single game that's

on this thing 30 is an OK number of games but you know I think if they could

have done better I think it should have been at least 50 games so but other than

that this system is well worth it if you can get your hands on one definitely

pick it up you know it's worth every penny so well let's get some other

opinions aside for myself what do you think Mario Yoshi

I like it that's great get out of my house I also love a short

controller - it hurts my back quite a bit after a while but that don't bother

me none get out of my house anyway guys this has

been super game addict kicking your game on and being geeks

Shark Bite Game: How to Play the Shark Bite Game - Duration: 3:03.

This product is sponsored by Goliath.

Hi, my name is Anjali and today, I'm gonna review

The Shark Bite game.

What is the Shark Bite game?

It's a game where you have to try to catch fish or creatures from the shark's mouth.

Snag the fish and be the winner

but if Sharky jumps your his dinner.

The Shark Bite game is ages four and older,

and it could be played to two to four players.

Here's what is inside.

Twelve sea creatures, one fishing rod,

one die, one sticker sheet,

and instructions, and you never wanna forget the one

hungry shark.

Here's how to set up the game.

First remove the dice stickers from the sticker sheet and stick one to each side of the dice.

Then remove the shark eye stickers from the sticker sheet and stick one to each side of the shark's head.

Next open the shark's mouth and push the shark down until it clicks to the base.

Best part is Shark Bite doesn't need batteries.

Yay no batteries.

Next place the 12 fish into the 12 holes of the shark's mouth.

Now, you're ready to play, but wait how do you play Glad you asked.

First, call your lovely family.

LOVELY FAMILY!

Next, roll the dice to see how many fish you could get.

If you drop a fish, that's ok.

Keep fishing until you get it completely out.

Remember the object of the game is to get the most fish.

But watch out if the shark bites you lose all the fish.

Reset the game and click the shark's mouth to the start position then put the fish you lost back inside could be caught again.

Continue playing until there's no fish left inside the shark's mouth. The player is the most fish at the end wins.

Here's a little fun, my family and I had in Shark Bite. Take a look.

What do you think of Shark Bite game? Leave a comment below.

Come on. Don't eat me. Don't eat me.

Game Design Process: Researching Your Video Game - Duration: 7:20.

Want to take you place amongst the great designers in the video game industry?

This is the first video in a two part series where we are going to show you how to properly

design a video game.

After watching this first video you will know how to do the right research so that you can

properly evaluate a market opportunity and differentiate your vision.

This is the same design research process that we've observed at big gaming studios

- and we've seen designers use this methodology

to build momentum and support for their ideas in the most competitive of industry studios.

We are Ask GameDev, and this is How to design a video game

Welcome back!

If you're new to Ask Gamedev, we make videos to help you learn about the games industry

so that you can elevate your games and Inspire others.

If you're on a gamedev journey, consider subscribing.

We'd love to help you along the way.

So you probably have a rough idea for a game that you think has promise.

You probably also have some high-level goals for your game - maybe you want to make money,

or show a competency, or maybe you just want to learn from development.

But before you start investing a lot of time and effort into that idea, the first step

is to do a comprehensive research of the market and products in that space to determine if

the concept and opportunity really has merit.

In this video will show you a framework used by the professionals - but this framework

is meant to be a guide only.

You'll definitely want to adjust it to meet the specific needs of your game.

As a starting point you should spend some time looking at the different game stores

for insights on the products in the genre you are considering.

This would be places like Steam, the App Store and Google Play, the different console stores,

and any other indie or geographically relevant stores.

You'll also want to review industry blogs and content sites that will provide good additional

insights on the market and competing products - like Gamasutra, Polygon, or Rock Paper Shotgun.

But these are all suggestions

So let's go through some typical questions that you may want to answer.

We will start with defining the market for your title.

Typical questions you will want to answer are:

How big is the market for your game?

Is this an appealing market?

Try to find sales numbers for existing titles to see how big the opportunity really is and

whether it is in line with what you want to accomplish.

What are the characteristics of primary and/or secondary consumers of this type of game?

Are these hard-core or casual gamers?

You'll want to make sure your design vision aligns with the expectations of these users.

What platforms are popular with your genre of game.

Do titles often exist cross-platform?

Or are they usually tied to one platform only?

You will want to ensure that you have the skill-set necessary to develop for the required

platforms.

Does marketing and promotion appear to have a large impact on sales?

Do you have the promotional capabilities or budget to compete?

Many genres are crowded and you'll want to know that you can reasonably promote your

title if you need to stand out.

Do successful titles in your space have additional release opportunities?

Are sequels commonplace?

Or additional DLC?

You may want to leave your story design open for sequels if the market allows it

Who are the typical influencers for these types of games are where do they hang out

online?

Is the game genre popular with streamers?

You may want to design components of your game to entice these influencers to check

out your game.

Competitor Research

Next take a look at the products in the your market.

Specifically, try to find out:

What feature sets do the incumbent products have?

What are must-haves features?

Can you meet those consumer expectations with the time or budget that you have?

Be realistic about what you can achieve and how you can differentiate.

Who competes in this space?

What size development team builds these type of games?

What capabilities do those teams typically have?

Knowing this information might inform whether you are underestimating the work involved

in developing this type of game.

What are the barriers to market entry?

Look at the incumbents - Do the teams that build these games usually enter this market

with modest offerings?

Does having a custom game engine have value?

This might indicate that it takes multiple releases to build the team and technology

to be a strong competitor in this market.

What price point can you charge?

Are their freemium or premium titles in the space?

Knowing what you can charge and how you plan make money is a critical part of your plan.

We recently made a detailed video on the different ways you can make money from games - check

it out with the link above.

What are the metacritic ranges for titles in your space?

How does metacritic tie to sales?

Is it reasonable to think you can hit the metacritic rating necessary for success?

Knowing the quality expectations of you target consumers should inform your final design

plan and feature set.

Where is innovation happening In this space?

Can an innovation from another gaming genre be applied here in a way that's meaningful?

Use these insights to help differentiate your feature set.

Are mods popular in your space?

Foresight into how player will interact with your game regarding customization can be hugely

valuable.

Do Intellectual property licenses matter?

Are there examples in the niche of publishers copying existing games only to put a license

on top of the design?

Presence of high-end licenses can sometime indicate a very competitive market that might

not be appropriate for indie efforts.

This list is by no means exhaustive - you'll need to refine your research questions that

need answering based on your specific genre and target market.

If we have missed any specific research topics - please go down to the comments below and

let your fellows viewers know what we've missed!

Making Sense of the Data

Once you have compiled all of this data, you will need to review the results in totality

and ask yourself the hard questions - Can you realistically compete in this space?

How can you position your game so that you stand out?

Can you meet your specific goals given what you have learned?

There a countless ways to review the data, but we have seen a few specific models that

have shown merit.

With Market characteristics, we like to list out the market conditions with a measurement

system that defines the importance and attractiveness of the each characteristic.

This way you can assign a general grade to a market that can then be compared to others.

For example, you might use a simple three point scale for importance - three being most

important and one being least important, and a similar three point scale for attractiveness

- one being most attractive and three being least attractive.

You then list out the most important market characteristics for your targeted genre - and

as an example let's say, 1) market size, 2) consumer expectations, and 3) marketing/promotional

requirements.

You then grade these characteristics on importance and attractiveness and then multiply the outcomes.

You can sum up the values for an overall grade that then can be compared to others market

where assessed under the same characters.

The point scale and the market attributes are obviously subjective and the data can

be swayed easily - but the value out of this exercise isn't the specific grade for each

market, but that it forces you to think about how to compare markets, their relative characteristics,

and what really matters in each.

So what do you think?

When you are evaluating a market - what do you think are the most important items to

consider?

Take a moment to look at the poll here and let us know what you think is most important

attributes in making a decision.

In regards to product characteristics, we like to visualize the different players in

2-axis format.

There are many ways to do this, but we like to compare two attributes and plot the market

competitors to promote thought about how to differentiate your product.

For example, we might compare price on the Y-Axis vs feature set depth on the x-axis.

High cost products with deep feature sets would be over here on the top right, with

shallow products at a lower price point over here on the bottom left.

You can then position your title based on how you think you want to differentiate.

This modelling process is meant to be repeated many times with different axis attributes

to help determine which ones make the most sense for your specific situation.

You could try developer size vs feature set, or art style vs user base - the possibilities

are somewhat endless and should be customized to what matters in your niche.

The value here is that this process forces you to think about how to position your products

versus other games in your space.

If after collecting and reviewing your market data you believe you want to move forward

with you design - the next step is to get specific about what you want to build!

We will cover this deep topic in part 2 of this video series: How to create a design.

Thanks for watching - and let us know in the comments what additional pieces of research

should your fellow viewers look for when evaluating a design idea?

Don't hold back - the viewer community needs your opinion!

Tribal Game Code Bison Web Extra - Duration: 8:27.

- (man) As far as tribal lands go

this reservation has more habitat available

than a lot of reservations do.

Because the Shoshone tribe was able

to choose where we wanted to be,

this place called the yooeti, the Warm Valley,

because of its plentiful fish and game,

our leadership, when the reservation was established,

recognized the importance of being able

to hunt and fish and gather.

When they were asked after 1863 and up til 1868

when the Fort Laramie Treaty established

this reservation as it is,

the Shoshone tribe was asked,

"Well do you want to have the area near Fort Bridger?"

because that was a trading place

that we would go to at certain times of the year.

And they said, "No, there's too much wind."

And they said, "Well how about the Tetons area?"

And they said, "No, there's too much snow."

"We want the Warm Valley."

And this has been a story that's been passed down

from my grandpa's talking about the leadership at that time

recognizing the importance of this area

for the resources that would be available

in perpetuity for future generations.

This reservation, in a lot of the help

from the Fish and Wildlife Service,

my dad was a biologist for that agency,

as a federal agency has trust responsibility to tribes

in management of resources, specifically,

for them the fisheries and wildlife.

This reservation and the tribes

were the first to establish a wilderness area in 1938

that's only accessible by foot or horseback.

And with the establishment of that,

and protection of that area,

that happened 26 years before the Federal Wilderness Act.

So there's over 200 lakes and several hundred miles

of rivers and streams that are in the mountains

of the Wind Rivers that feed into the system

in terms of water and in terms of fisheries

in the Big Wind River, our reservation's namesake.

When our land base was 44 million acres,

and we would travel to different areas to hunt

bison or bighorn sheep

or sage chickens or pronghorn antelope,

that land base was large enough

to sustain year-round hunting.

When we lost our 42 million acres of territory

when it was reduced to the size it is now,

and in other subsequent losses of land,

in 1868 unlimited hunting resulted

in diminishment of our wildlife species.

And so it wasn't until the late '70s and early '80s

that the leadership was recognizing

that we needed to do something

in terms of wildlife management.

The pronghorn antelope were gone.

Bighorn sheep were gone.

Elk numbers and deer numbers, moose and others

were plummeting.

And so, with the help of the Fish and Wildlife Service

and with help and recognition of that help

by our tribal councils and tribal leaders,

the game code was established that set seasons

and bag limits on our wildlife species.

That allowed eventually for reintroductions

of pronghorn and bighorn sheep,

one of the only bighorn sheep transplants

done by train happened here in the reservation

in the northern boundary in the Wind River Canyon.

So with the implementation of that game code,

we were able to manage our wildlife species

such that we could build the numbers

and increase the opportunities

for tribal members to again subsist and utilize

those resources for ourselves.

So here at Wind River we have probably

one of the best wildlife management programs in the nation,

and probably one of the best on an Indian reservation

because of that collaborative effort between

the Fish and Wildlife Service and the tribes.

That feeling has continued in our effort with buffalo.

So not only working closely

with the Fish and Wildlife Service

as a federal agency, but also organizations

like the National Wildlife Federation.

Through their tribal partnerships program

we've worked together closely for a number of years

to strategically kind of maneuver the right way

to do a buffalo restoration effort here at Wind River.

And that's been several years of work,

and without that effort, and without that collaboration,

this buffalo restoration project wouldn't have worked.

But essentially there's less than 10,000

genetically pure bison in the United States

that exist under natural regulating factors.

Most of the bison today are under commercial production.

They're bred for ease of handling or docility

or phenotypic characteristics like dark hides or size.

And so those are being genetically manipulated by man.

So when it comes to preserving the bison species,

it's incredibly important that we create

satellite populations of genetically pure bison,

certified disease-free bison, but also

bison that can exist under natural regulating factors

like climatic conditions, predation, and actually

just buffalo being wild buffalo.

And so there's very few places that that can happen.

Here at Wind River we have the land base to do that.

We actually have more habitat here at Wind River

than what's available for bison in Yellowstone.

Currently there's a carrying capacity

of around 3,500 animals on about 100 thousand acres

in Yellowstone.

Our target population for the reservation

could potentially be a thousand animals and we have

probably 3- to 4- hundred thousand acres in the Wind Rivers

and another 3- to 4- hundred thousand acres

in the alcreeks that are prime buffalo or bison habitat

that contain summer and winter range.

And so when I talk about the importance

of this reservation to buffalo conservation

and culture revitalization it's because

we have one of the best opportunities to do that

in that we are right here.

Most tribes are on tracks of land that

don't have large acreage.

So when a tribe wants to restore buffalo,

they have to fence off an area.

They can get up to 20- to 30- thousand acres

which is a large chunk of land for other tribes.

But it's really interesting to think

that we have hundreds of thousands of acres here

that we could potentially manage 'em

as wildlife under our game code.

Very few places in the nation,

very few reservations, can lay claim to that.

Xenogears Review! - The Game Collection - Duration: 10:11.

Welcome back to The Game Collection!

A while back, a viewer sent to me a game that has been high on my list of games to review

for a couple of years now.

The game has a reputation that precedes it; it's often mentioned in discussions about

the best RPGs of all time.

In its earliest stages of development, the game was envisioned as a sequel to Chrono

Trigger, but with a science-fiction bend that was ultimately decided too far removed from

Chrono Trigger to be feasible.

Instead the game was developed under another name, Final Fantasy VII.

However the dark and complicated plot of the game was deemed unsuitable for the franchise.

development continued under a different name, Project Noah, until it finally received the

name we all know.

Xenogears!

Xenogears is a science fiction turn-based RPG that takes place in the distant future.

It was created by Tetsuya Takahashi, developed by Squaresoft, and released in 1998.

It was the first entry in a collection of loosely related games sometimes referred to

as the Xeno series, a series which includes Xenogears, the Xenosaga trilogy, and most

recently the Xenoblade series.

The plot of Xenogears is a tapestry of events spanning millennia.

The scope of these events could fuel its own branch of mythological study called Xenonomy.

In fact with the release of Xenogears Perfect Works, you've already got yourself a pretty

substantial textbook, complete with authentic college textbook pricing.

And we can't even begin to talk about the ambition behind the game without mentioning

that this game was only supposed to be episode 5 of a 6-part saga.

Suffice it to say, the world they built for Xenogears was absolutely massive.

The story of Xenogears picks up as our hero Fei prepares to attend a wedding.

His two best friends are getting married, and it's the talk of the town.

But disaster strikes the small village when a battle between warring forces clashes directly

on top of the village.

In a desperate act, Fei enters an empty mech and attempts to defend his village, but bloodlust

overtakes him in an explosion of energy and carnage.

When the dust settles, Fei regains consciousness to find the ashes of his former life beneath

his feet.

Survivors of the event, including his closest living friends cast him out.

Upon travelling through a nearby forest Fei encounters Elly, one of the mech pilots from

the events of the night prior.

Lost within the woods, the two agree to a truce for the time being in order to assure

mutual survival.

The story of the game is a long and winding one.

The plot centers around chance meetings and destined encounters, immortality and trans

humanism, sorrow and revenge.

The overall tone established with these themes feels very somber and mature.

The game does have moments of levity, but those often seem fleeting.

Xenogears isn't exactly what I'd call a feel-good RPG.

And because the game draws heavily from mid-20th-century science fiction novels and movies, you have

several rabbit holes of reading and binge-watching with which you can supplement your journey

through the game's 70-hour duration.

While the game is certainly well thought out and cultured, I think that it may have been

too ambitious for its own good.

If not during production then certainly in hindsight.

Xenogears suffers from some pretty terrible pacing, which is by far the worst part of

the game, and in fact this may be one of its only bad aspects.

The game reveals information too slowly for too long in an attempt to build intrigue,

but ended up wearing me out.

This trend continues for the majority of the game, only to shift gears so to speak in the

final acts.

Which brings me to the rather notorious second disc of the game.

During Disc 2 of Xenogears, the game is no longer played, it is instead dictated to the

player in cut-scenes.

It is speculated that the game was intended to be another disc or two longer, but rand

out of funding or developers were siphoned off to other projects.

This low-point in the game lead me to joke about the idea that Xenogears may in fact

be the best JRPG never made.

You see, despite the atrocious pacing and tantric plot techniques employed, Xenogears

is still a console-defining experience on the PlayStation, and in many ways feels like

the quintessential PlayStation RPG.

In fact, part of the overly ambitious and grandiose vision behind the game may be responsible

for what makes this game feel so essential, and representative of RPGs of the era.

Including the Arena battles, Xenogears has three distinct combat systems.

Two of these combat systems you'll engage in a regular basis as you progress through

the game.

The first system is hand-to-hand combat, which is your typical heroes versus monsters on

the playing field.

But the twist with this battle system is that you are given a number of points with which

to choose attacks each turn, which you can string together into combos that this game

calls deathblows.

Deathblows are unlocked gradually throughout the game in a rather unintuitive way, but

when you do unlock a new deathblow, nothing looks or feels more satisfying.

Choosing to not use all of those points in a turn allows you to save them up for the

next round of combat, and so on, at which point you can unleash a flurry of death-blows

back-to-back-to-back-to-you-get-the-idea-to-back.

This is something that can be used tactically, but isn't usually necessary outside of a few

boss battles early in the game.

But it still looks super cool!

This battle system otherwise contains all of the usual trappings of JRPGs of the time

including magic, healing, buffs and debuffs, etc.

The other battle system in the game is what happens when you fight enemies from within

your giant Gears!

When battling within your Gears, attacks obviously do far more damage, and you take far less

damage.

However, movement within a gear costs fuel, which can be hard to come by.

In addition, repairing gears in the field is also not possible for the first part of

the game, and when it does become available it uses up a lot of the aforementioned fuel.

Gears are also capable of using deathblows, but you must charge up the gear's battle level

by using weaker attacks first.

But again, when your gears start unleashing kung-fu deathblows, nothing could possibly

be any cooler.

The universe that Xenogears presents you with is large and expansive, but the world map

that you can explore seems a little sparsely populated, and relatively uninspired.

That which is there is pretty fantastic though.

Small villages, desert junk towns, floating cities, and a giant underground metropolis

are only a handful of neat locations that you will gradually uncover as you explore

the world.

There are a handful of interesting NPCs that make recurring appearances from start to finish

that are pretty neat, and other NPCs have their own little arcs that you can follow

throughout the game.

These small touches help the world feel alive.

However there are some player characters that the game appears to have forgotten as soon

as they were put into your party.

I'm positive that more character development arcs were planned for the main cast, but the

sad fact is that it would have been better to omit or combine some characters into others,

and flesh out the ones that were left.

The visuals of Xenogears are stunning.

Using the visual style similar to Grandia, the majority of the world exploration occurs

in a polygonal world using 2D sprites.

The player is able to rotate the camera using shoulder buttons.

This is a visual style that I think uses the PlayStation perfectly.

The game features some very well-done sprite-work, and beautiful animations for each of the deathblows.

The only game that I know of to do this style of graphics any better so far would be Breath

of Fire IV which wouldn't come out for another two years, but even so, the animation within

Xenogears is far more dynamic.

On the music front, Yasunori Mitsuda, the legend behind the music of Chrono Trigger

and Chrono Cross, composed the music within Xenogears.

His work is masterful, and strangely nostalgic to me.

I had never played Xenogears before, but everything about the music felt so familiar, probably

because of all the time I have spent with Chrono Cross.

Mitsuda definitely has a unique voice in his compositions, and that voice shines through

all of his compositions in Xenogears.

Xenogears was well received upon its release, but within a year many of the developers involved

would leave Squaresoft and go on to form Monolith Soft, with Tetsuya Takahashi at the helm.

Xenogears remains an intellectual property of Square-Enix, and seems unlikely to get

a remake any time soon, despite massive fan demand.

Monolith Soft remained active and went on to develop the Xenosaga franchise, but that's

a story for another day.

Xenogears is a wonderful game with some big flaws that, in my opinion, keep it from hitting

the upper echelons of JRPG stardom among the likes of its Chrono cousins.

But the unique charm of the little game that could, but actually couldn't, has still earned

itself a solid spot in The Game Collection!

I'd like to send a huge thank you to Matthew for sending in Xenogears.

Also, I now have a P.O.

Box, check out the description for more info.

Lastly, I'd also like to thank all of my Patrons for helping make The Game Collection possible.

And thank you for watching!

Cloud Gaming: the future of low end? (LiquidSky, Parsec gaming, Vortex) - Duration: 9:08.

Earlier this year Nvidia did a showcase of the PC version of GeForce now, a service capable

of transforming any cheap laptop into a powerful gaming PC. And this was met with tremendous hype.

After getting several messages from people asking how was this service using the power

of the internet to power up their GPUs

or discussion on how this sort of made my channel unnecessary I was a bit surprised

because what this service essentially does is

run the game on a remote computer and stream the video feed back to you.

And that... is not exactly a new concept!

Early attempts at this includes a service called OnLive which operated from 2010 to

2012 in the US and UK and that charged users a subscription and allowed to connect small

streaming boxes to their TVs and then run a select number of games from their store

in a remote PC and

I remember vividly being in college studying Engineering around that time and people were discussing how

as the network infrastructure improved cloud gaming would render the concept of a game

console obsolete.

That... did not happen.

That is obvious.

There is an excellent video by SuperBunnyHop on this concept that goes into a bit more

depth but with Nvidia entering the game

Nvidia already does something similar for their shield device and I was hoping that

experience would have served as a platform to expand into something that could finally

break into the mainstream

That is until they only released their service on open beta, everyone was pushed to a waiting

list from which I have received no answer in months and with no full release of pricing details

on the horizon

I got tired of waiting and decided to look at some of the smaller companies that have

been doing this thing for years to answer one question:

Is cloud gaming still a possibility for the future of gaming for people on low-end PCs?

The first thing you should notice is the internet requirements.

It should be obvious if you understand how these services work but in order to function correctly you need a really

good low latency and high bandwidth internet connection and also you need to be relatively close to one

of the data centres

Since I have an optic fibre connection and live in a large European city I am very close

to being the ideal use case for something like this, but that already puts me in a very

small sliver of the gaming population.

I will get back to that, let's do some experiments.

My first idea was to use with the cheap PC I used for my Fortnite videos…

a second generation i5 with a humble IntelHD 3000

The service that I have heard the most about is Liquid Sky.

The way it works is that you buy some intermediary coin called Sky credits

which are then consumed at a rate depending on how powerful is the computer that you want

to rent.

On the cheapest options, it seems you get about 25 hours of gaming for about 10 dollars.

From there you connect to a cloud computer where you can open most preinstalled game

stores, or install your own such as the epic launcher, enter your account and have the

pleasure of watching as your games download to this remote computer.

Keep in mind that you are paying for these computers by the hour.

From what I could research LiquidSky mainly has data centres in north America and Europe.

They used to have many more but apparently, they had to close due to lack of demand.

The service chooses the data center for you

And you can not change it manually unless you are premium customer.

the experience was more in less in line with what I have come to expect from cloud gaming.

The video feed felt a bit choppy and there was noticeable input lag but the result is

tolerable considering the specs of the test machine.

Which is in itself surprising, because the other two services that I was going to test

could not run properly on this hardware.

Liquid Sky definitively takes the cake on low-end PC compatibility.

So I was forced to upgrade a little bit to a still very modest Surface Pro 1.

This laptop and I have been through a lot.

Additionally, you might have noticed that I have added an extra complication to the

test.

The desktop was connected to ethernet but this laptop-tablet can only do wifi which

adds an extra layer of instability to network.

Next on the list is Parsec.

Originally a service meant for streaming a gaming PC locally or over the internet (in

the same vein as steam in-home streaming, just with a much longer range)

Parsec expanded to include the ability to rent a gaming PC from the cloud, where you

can select from a list of available servers and locations with the cost per hour of each

server clearly displayed in actual currency, as well as the extra monthly cost of a hard

drive by size.

I picked the cheapest one in Amsterdam and apparently that came down to also around 24

hours per 10 dollars of credit.

This cloud PCs take about 5 to 10 minutes to start, and you have to remember to stop

them when you are done or you will continue to be charged, something I learned the hard

way,

and once again you have to watch as the game installs while you are being charged for it.

At the end

what I got from it was a remote PC that could easily play Fortnite on the highest settings.

Now, this is the part where I got excited.

I did not expect this to work at all over a wifi, even if I am using a good 5 GHz band.

What I actually got was a perfect feed of the game with such a small amount of latency

that I initially thought I was accidentally playing the game locally... (at ultra settings

on 1080, like such a thing was possible) or streaming it from another PC in my apartment.

I had a couple of matches where I almost forgot I was playing on a remote PC altogether.

This experience was a window into how good this whole concept could be when the stars

align and all the small things worked.

The third service I tested was Vortex, a hybrid approach.

Rather than renting a full desktop you pay a flat membership and select from a list of

pre-installed games.

This overcomes the problem of having to pay to see your games install, but you still do

need to own most of the big popular titles

There are some included games in the subscription, but nothing very notorious.

Still, from a purely monetary point of view, this does seem to be one of the cheapest options,

with 10 dollars giving you an almost unlimited number of hours.

This, in turn, has the additional disadvantage of their servers being pretty crowded.

I have to join a virtual queue every single time I wanted to play a game.

And how was the experience?

Well...

Not very good.

Between the constant skips in the video feed and the very noticeable input lag there was

no way I could have any chance of defending myself in this game.

According to the website I am close to one of the data centres so maybe the service requires

an even better PC.

So, is cloud gaming the future and local PC gaming a thing of the past?

Ok, no, look.

Let's imagine a set of conditions A. You live close to a data centre of one

of these services.

B. You have access to a high-quality internet connection with low latency and no data caps.

C. You live in a situation where it makes more sense to spend money on renting a PC

rather than buying components, and yes this is very specific to how many hours of gaming

you tend to do per week.

D. You have a compatible device to receive the stream.

If you fulfil all of those then this thing will likely rock your world but the existence

of that set of conditions means that for the moment these are niche services rather than

a mainstream industry-changing trend.

I do not necessarily think that is a bad thing.

My experience with Parsec, in particular, convinced me that as the quality of the

global internet infrastructure evolves there is a place for cloud gaming as a consumer

option while. But, at least for now, it is not the wide revolution that a lot of people in

my inbox seemed to believe.

Still a very cool option if you can make it work.

One more thing, I was delighted to discover that Parsec has a client for Raspberry Pi

that works really well

to the point that I am planning to attach this guy to the back of my living room TV

and have it as an additional lightweight option for gaming.

So yes, even with all my observation I do find that this concept has a lot of merit.

Here is my hope that Geforce Now for PC, whenever is released, is another step in improving

this technology.

But, do you ever find yourself asking how these technologies work?

How does information such as a low latency video feed of a game,

or input from your controllers gets passed through a wire into a PC miles away?
