US military base crash leaves two dead and six injured as vehicle ploughs through troops

Two soldiers have been left dead and six others injured in the accident. Officials at the base have said two of the soldiers who were hit are currently in critical condition.

Specific details surrounding the tragedy are yet to be released, but officials have branded in the incident as a tragic accident.

The base confirmed the news in a public statement, which said: "A tragic accident involving a military vehicle and a troop formation resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and injured six others, two critically.

"We will thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident." Major General Pete Johnson, the commander of the United States Army Training Centre and Fort Jackson, said: "Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the soldiers we lost today and to the families of the injured.

"They represent the best of our nation and we will endeavour to support all those affected through this difficult time."  .

Officials said they would not release the names of the soldiers who died until after they had notified their families. South Carolina public officials, including the state's attorney general, Alan Wilson, and Congressman Joe Wilson, have expressed their condolences.

In a statement, Congressman Wilson said: "Roxanne and I are deeply saddened by the news that two brave soldiers lost their lives at Fort Jackson. We are forever grateful for their sacrifices - and those of their families.

"We ask that everyone keep the six service members who sustained injuries in their thoughts and prayers in the days ahead." Attorney General Wilson tweeted: "My prayers and condolences go to the soldiers killed or injured and their families at Fort Jackson today.

The military community is with you." Fort Jackson trains more than 40,000 soldiers each year, according to its website.
