Lights on.

Lights off.

Lights on.

Lights off.

Oh, hold on...

Lights on

How comfortable life has become, ladies and gentlemen.

In this case just by turning the lights on and off by clapping my hands.

This sensor technology is not only a useful helper at home, but also on the road.

To help us take a look into the future of automated driving

we've invited Head of Self Driving Car Project at Continental.

Here is Andree Hohm.

Hi Chris, good to see you!

Great to have you here!

I see you brought a bag along with a lot of interesting devices...

Exactly!

...what's that about?

You talked about sensor technology...

...and I have brought some more examples of sensors we have in everyday life.

very good!

For example you have that movement sensor...

Right.

Maybe you know it from switching lights on and off.

Yes.

There's that electric soap dispenser.

You I see them very often in public toilets for example.

We have that nice example that is already here: the trash can opens automatically...

...so give it a try!

Maybe next time...

A very nice example is the automated vacuum cleaner.

I got to tell you this kind of looks like the content of my girlfriend's handbag.

Actually, this is the handbag of my girlfriend...

...just kidding.

This is a very nice example:

The vacuum cleaner operates automatically.

So if I start it, then it goes along...

Oh Oh...

...and cleans your table. You don't have to be careful

because it detects automatically if there's any danger of falling down.

That's amazing!

Look, can you see? It stops automatically...

And if there's the danger of falling off the table it just stops automatically and nothing happens.

Really, great technology.

these are just nice examples for devices that use sensors

to analyse what is going on in their environment.

So you're telling me you're using the same technology in this vacuum robot for your for your cars?

No, this is just an example.

But of course for vehicles we need a bunch of different sensors.

If you're driving manually, you watch the road ahead of you and react accordingly, right?

and driverless vehicles also have to monitor the road ahead:

Is there any obstacle?

Is there any pedestrian?

Where are the lane markings you want to follow?

This has to be done automatically and therefore we need sensors.

So what do these components and the sensors actually look like?

Shall we take a look at them?

If we can?

Give it a try!

Oh!

That's great, isn't it?

That is great Andree!

I thought you were getting more stuff out of your bag, but this is fantastic.

What do we have here?

Let's take this as an example. This is a very exciting device...

it's a stereo camera.

Just like you have two eyes giving you the ability to see what's going on ahead

and on the road in front of you.

It has two lenses and can do exactly the same thing.

It's mounted behind the windscreen and it can see if there is someone on the road and the lane markings.

So the car can get a lot of information on what to do next.

Fantastic!

What is this piece about?

it's very exciting device...

It's a radar sensor.

it sends out electromagnetic waves, gets feedback from that

and can precisely detect the velocity of other vehicles.

Much more precise than you could do with your eyes.

so that means we have these sensing components

that basically gather all kinds of information from the road and the surroundings.

What happens with all this data?

This data is all collected at one place - this is a kind of central brain in the car,

collecting all this information and putting it together.

In the end it enables to make decisions.

So basically you're telling me this component right here decides

whether to break or to move over to the left or to the right and avoids accidents?

Exactly! This is like a highly functional brain in the vehicle.

Just like you, when you're driving manually, making your decisions in your brain

It does that in an automated vehicle too.

Awesome.

So we have one more example here: This is a brake system.

If the decision is: hit the brakes.

You have to have a device that hits the brakes when there is no driver.

That's what it does: it actually hits the brakes

In this way, the vehicle can decelerate very fast if there is a dangerous situation.

We have a test vehicle in which we've put all this technology in.

This is our self-driving car.

This is the car we're testing our research in the field of driverless technology on.

I'm looking forward to it when we're talking about automated driving!

I'd like to thank you first of all for all the information.

There's one more thing we have to do though before I let you go

and that is...

...take a quick picture.

Oh, I'm looking forward to this.

You are, I know!

You've probably heard of this.

Cheese!

So once again: thank you for showing us what you can do with things you find in a random handbag

and also thank you ladies and gentlemen for watching

and be sure to tune in again for the next episode of The Garage

with more technologies and new innovations from Continental.

2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland | Perfect Winter Vehicle with Low Kilometers - Duration: 2:07.

Hey

How's it going?

It's Adam Pollock, Sherwood Park Dodge

I have a special vehicle in the pre-owned area here.

I wanted to show you.

This one is a

I don't know if you know what an Overland is

but it's a trim level in the Grand Cherokee

and it is just

a gem, it's beautiful

This is a 2015

with I think 24,000 kilometres on it only

but take a look

Beautiful, brilliant black

and look at the chrome highlights on it.

What a piece of class

I love it

I love it

I could see

for me I would love it if my girlfriend drove this

to be honest

Let's take a look inside

This one is unique

and what I like about it

Come around

It has not just the black basic interior

It's got this beautiful beige interior

Look at the Overland embroidery

Heated ventilated seats

you name it, this is a full load kind of options

Right here is air suspension okay?

It's just a classy, classy vehicle that can do

anything that you need it too

Great for the winter

and you'll look great in the summer or the winter driving it.

Let's take a peek in the back, I'll show you how much

space is there.

Hey!

In the back here the seats will fold down and give you

all this space here

as well as here.

So this has an upgraded sound system

you name it

panoramic sunroof

and then the nice thing about it is

It's actually a power liftgate so instead of trying to pull down

this, maybe you are a short girl and you can't reach

you just push the button and it actually closes for you

but the main thing about it is

I just really wanted to show you this beautiful 4x4

that I'd love to see any kind of woman driving.

If you like the vehicle as much as I do

I'd love to see any woman in this vehicle

but if you're interested give me a call

(780) 206-5876

Text even

I'll get back to you or you can comment below

on the Facebook post and I'll get back to you via the Internet

so my name's Adam Pollock

Again, give me a call, text or comment below
