MEP and former Ukip leader Nigel Farage has slammed the German Chancellor saying she can go jump after she waded into the debate about the Brexit bill, saying Britain had an obligation to pay.
Mr Farage told : She can go jump. To ask the UK to pay a Brexit bill without agreement on a free trade deal is tantamount to blackmail.
Their make-believe Brexit bill has not legal basis whatsoever and the EU knows it. The German Chancellor, who has no official role within the bloc, decided to weigh into the ongoing debate in her weekly podcast.
Acting as a mouthpiece for the EU, Mrs Merkel warned the disputed bill will need to be settled before Britain leaves the bloc. .
She said: "This is about obligations that Great Britain has entered into and that naturally must remain on the books. It's not about the cost of divorce — that makes it sound like fines.
We're still at the very start of these negotiations." The question of Britain paying a Brexit bill, let alone how much, is seen by many as the most contentious issue surrounding the Brexit negotiations with many suggesting the UK should not pay one penny while others have argued over just how much Britain should pay.
Prime Minister Theresa May's administration said in July it acknowledged the country would have a bill to pay for outstanding contributions, saying it wanted to "determine a fair settlement of the UK's rights and obligations." The Government though has been silent on just how much the bill should be with some analysts estimating the figure could be as large as £92.5bn ( €100bn) although EU officials have also never put a figure on the sum.
In her podcast, Mrs Merkel described the bill as a "very difficult issue".
Mrs Merkel's comments come at a key stage as talks with the EU are due to resume on Monday in Brussels with either side apparently finding little common ground to agree on the key topics.
The German leader faces national elections next month on September 24, and has already launched her campaign to be Chancellor for a fourth time.
As Britain is a net contributor to the EU, any loss of funds could have repercussions on Germany's domestic policies with other net contributors, such as Germany and France, possibly being forced to make up any difference in the budget.
Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson had previously said the could "go whistle" for any Brexit bill but recently conceded that it would have to pay something to the bloc once it had left.
But he said the upper end figure of €100bn was not a figure he recognised.
He said: "I think that some of the sums I have seen seem to be very high and of course we will meet our obligating we are law abiding bill paying people.
"The UK has contributed hundreds of billions over the years to the EU." A spokeswoman for the Department for Exiting the European Union said: As David Davis has said, on financial settlement the UK and EU both recognise the importance of sorting out the obligations we have to one another, both legally, and in the spirit of mutual cooperation. .

Floyd Mayweather has fought 49 times and won them all. The boxing great had spent most of the 20-minute session selling his mega-money clash with UFC fighter Conor McGregor that takes place this weekend at the T-Mobile Arena.
But he had one more thing to say, one more sell to make before he departed the scene and that was for his recently-opened gentleman's club just off the Strip here in Las Vegas.

Mayweather has been the pay-per-view star of boxing for the last decade and three of his 49 fights have generated the most money in the history of the sport.
His clash with Manny Pacquiao two years ago remains the richest ever boxing event having grossed £465m. But this weekend's bout with the mammoth-mouth McGregor could surpass that.
Even though many think it will be a walk in the park for the 49-0 boxing veteran against a debutant in the sport, he has still sold it to be a mega event and there is no doubting it is no matter what you think of the fight itself.
Millions will buy this event around the world with most intrigued to see what actually unfolds despite the bizarreness of it all.
The casual sports fans are gripped by it, the MMA aficionados are backing their man to shock the world while the diehard boxing supporters will no doubt take a peek because curiosity will get the better of them.
Obviously McGregor's stardom in MMA, his brash nature and his appeal to the millennials is a key reason why this could break all the records.
The worldwide press tour where both men continually swore at each other while thousands of fans roared them on will help.
And a clash between the pair at Tuesday grand arrival event in the searing heat outside the arena that ended with their entourages pushing and shoving each other have all added to the worldwide interest.
But Mayweather has played his part by downplaying his skills because of his age and highlighting that his two-year absence from the ring could leave him rusty.
Yet he is also promising a rare stoppage win, with his last being in 2011, and paying back fans who were left disappointed by his comfortable points win over Pacquiao in 2015.

Tempted by a new MX-5 but consider its engine four cylinders short of a picnic? Fear not, as Flyin' Miata – the US company renowned for rehoming V8s in MX-5s – has a solution for you.
Admittedly it's not a cheap solution, but it is a simple one. Simply drop a new MX-5 off at Flyin' Miata, part with $49,995, and you'll be rewarded with a 430bhp V8-engined roadster. How good's the swap?.
It's no hack job, by any stretch of the imagination – Flyin' Miata comprehensively reworks the Mazda to accept its new powerplant. The entry-level engine option is a 430bhp 6.2-litre LS3, which is backed by a two-year warranty.
Power's dispatched from the nose of the Mazda to the tail by a six-speed T56 gearbox, while the limited-slip differential from a Camaro does its best to maximise traction.
Each Flyin' Miata ND also gets an aluminium driveshaft, heavy-duty axles, an upgraded fuel and cooling system, bigger brakes and FOX Racing suspension.
The company goes to town on making sure the whole swap has an OEM+ vibe to it, by using proper wiring looms, retaining the air-con and making sure the factory instrument cluster works.
'All parts used in the conversion are new,' says Flyin' Miata. 'We use as many factory parts as possible in order to ease servicing in the future, right down to the rubber in the motor mounts.
All functions of the car continue to function, from the stop/start button to all the factory gauges to the infotainment system. The one system that is deleted is traction control.
We also remove the electric power steering and install a hydraulically assisted unit with a variable ratio.'.
A host of further upgrades are offered, should you feel the need for more speed – including a 525bhp/489lb ft LS 376/525 engine upgrade and a carbonfibre driveshaft. In any instance, your newly muscled-up MX-5 will unquestionably go like hell.
Does it still handle well?. It's claimed that the conversion adds 113kg to the MX-5's kerb weight, which isn't an entirely unreasonable amount. The stock front/rear bias shifts fractionally, too, from 52:48 to 53:47.
Factor in the upgraded suspension, braking and steering systems, and the net result should be a sweet-handling, grin-inducing convertible with a charismatic exhaust note.
Flyin' Miata states: 'Weve taken great pains to retain the Miatas handling and character, and expanded on it with the improved feel of the hydraulic power steering.
Far from being an uncontrollable monster, the car remains as friendly as the original and is able to gain excellent traction off corners. This is probably the biggest surprise anyone gets while driving, how easy it is to control.'.
Sounds great, but surely there are better options for the money?.
In the US the Miata… sorry, MX-5, starts at $24,915. So, add the cost of the conversion and you're looking at a minimum of $74,910. Yup, that's almost £57k for an MX-5, albeit one with a V8.
That's a lot of coin for a 2/3rds scale Corvette. For comparison, in the US, the Corvette itself starts at $55,400.
But then C7s are everywhere in the States – and it's hard to beat the sheer fun you can have in a small car with a monstrous engine.

A senior Whitehall source told The Sun: "We have been very reasonable and offered up a huge amount of potential solutions to bridge the gaps. "Barnier has thrown most back in our face, and publicly.
"David thinks the time has come to start pointing this out, so the other 27 EU leaders can see how stubborn and unreasonable the EU Commission is becoming and give them fresh instructions to get on with it." The EU, led by its chief negotiator Michel Barnier, is planning to deliver an onslaught of legal claims to British cash but Mr Davis will side-step these demands, an insider said.
The source, who is closely involved with the Brexit negotiations, said Mr Davis will refuse to disclose even roughly what the UK is prepared to pay.
They said: "It would be like turning up half your cards." Using the unusual medium of food-based puns, the source said the UK would refuse to let Brussels dictate the manner and direction of the juddering exit talks.
They said: "We are in the season of the Great British Bake Off, aren't we? So we will make it clear that they have massively over-egged their demands.
"In an ideal world, they want to salami-slice us, step by step by step." Forecasters Oxford Economics raise the chances of 'no deal' from 30 per cent to 40 per cent yesterday.
It said: "The UK has made little attempt to progress separation issues, while its ideas for transition could require yet more negotiation and risk eroding the benefits of transitional arrangements for business.".
It follows reports that the EU's bullying stance towards smaller nations is causing anger and frustration, a Croatian politician declared. Croatia was coaxed into the bloc in 2013 with promises there would have an equal hand in the 27-nation superstate's decisions.
But now Ivan Pernar, founder of the populist Human Shield party, has claimed Croatia has been shut out of the process during their four-year membership of the EU.
He said: "We had been assured that we would make decisions on equal terms at the European table. "However when we joined the EU, we only found out that nothing depends on us.
"The EU makes all the decisions which we are obliged to put into practice in strict compliance with orders from Brussels.".
