Youtube daily game Jun 26 2017

In the days before the market growth of "gaming capture cards," us YouTubers had to be VERY

creative about how we captured gameplay for YouTube.

Really early in the YouTube days, us without money had to hook our game consoles up to

a VCR and record to tape, then convert to DVD and then rip to PC.

Fast forward, and we had to get very creative about adapting old professional video equipment

for recording out game consoles.

The Black Magic Intensity Pro was never intended to record video games, but it did a decent

job.

Nowadays, we have an entire market of gaming capture cards.

But your beginner YouTuber may still not be able to afford such devices.

As I try to cover frequently on my channel, buying older used electronics is almost always

an easier route than finding a hidden way to afford the expensive stuff.

So what if you had access to non-gaming production gear?

From a colleague, family member, auction lot?

Many electronics can be obtained for super cheap from auctions and used sales.

How would such a product compare to the gaming-oriented capture cards?

ARE YOU TIRED OF YOUR STREAMS OR VOICE CHAT SOUNDING LIKE THIS?

Do you want the comfort and quality of high-end headphones without sacrificing microphone

quality?

Antlion's ModMic 5 is the perfect solution.

Their dual-capsule microphone attaches easily and securely to your existing headphones and

fits within any setup thanks to the modular cable system.

It comes with a cable wrap to protect your wires, includes an optional inline mute module

and sounds a little something like this.

Check it out via the link in the description below.

I'm EposVox, here to make tech easier and more fun today comparing the video recording

quality of the Elgato capture cards - namely the HD60 Pro and the HD60 S - and the Atomos

Ninja 2 professional video recorder.

The Ninja 2 records video to a very high bitrate ProRes video format, but at a maximum of 720p

60FPS.

The Elgato cards record a 1080p 60FPS video feed a much more lossy H264 format.

My question was whether or not the ProRes files - with MUCH higher bitrate and better

color information - could create higher-quality game footage files than the super lossy recordings

from gaming capture cards.

So grabbed my PS4 out of my gaming setup, and recorded a match in Rocket League and

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

These games support theater mode replays, which means I can record the exact same match

and conditions at 720p with the Ninja 2 and 1080p with the Elgato.

How did the two systems compare?

The answers kinda surprised me.

First, we've been looking at a comparison on Rocket League, split vertically down the

middle.

The Ninja 2 is one side, and the Elgato is the other.

Can you spot a difference?

I was quite surprised as to how well it held up, even splitting over to a horizontal split.

They record frame times slightly differently, so there is a bit of mis-alignment, but it's

hard to truly tell which is which.

Let's flip on over to Black Ops 3 for a moment, again, vertical down the middle.

And horizontal.

Keep in mind these are un-touched, un-edited other than scaling the Ninja footage from

720p up to 1080p.

For the last blind test, here's one device by itself….

And now the other….

Same device on Rocket League….

And now the other device again…

Spotting differences is one thing, but can you really tell which is which?

YouTube compression trashes footage, so this helps show that you can compete with the "big

leagues" in video quality, even without the "normal" gear.

Plus, you can render to higher bitrates from the ProRes files than with Elgato's file.

The higher bitrate you give to YouTube, the better your end result can look, as long as

you don't surpass your recorded bitrate.

So let's jump into the details for a moment.

Zooming in on the Black Ops 3 HUD, you start to see where the 720p resolution becomes a

serious limiting factor in the video's quality.

The Elgato's HUD stays just a little sharper around text and the icon when zoomed in.

Not only that, but there's some seriously-distracting chromatic aberration-looking distortion that

occurs around the text on the Ninja 2 recording once you zoom in enough.

Zooming in on the gun, the logo is a little blurrier and has a lot more jaggies on the

720p Ninja recording, whereas the on the 1080p Elgato copy it is most smoothed out and clearer.

Gun textures are just ever so slightly clearer on the Elgato, as well.

Zooming in on a specific texture here, you can't really tell any difference.

Black Ops 3 uses dynamic resolution scaling that changes on the fly to keep performance

smooth, and textures wind up looking the same on both recorders.

Jumping back to Rocket League, the HUD is quite a bit sharper, though more jagged, on

the Elgato recording at 1080p.

The same applies to the car.

Sharper, but more jagged.

However when in motion, certain aspects don't stand out as much at 1080p, like the spikes

on the wheels.

Textures actually get more blurred at 1080p in Rocket League, so the deeper color information

provided actually gives a sharper-looking image for many aspects of the game while recorded

to the Ninja 2.

If we zoom in on the goal, the Elgato's recording has a much more jagged look, which

does not compress well at all.

So the Ninja recording isn't quite as sharp, but looks overall much better.

Live action camera footage can be a lot easier to scale than computer-generated game footage,

so the 720p limitation of the Ninja almost outweighs the benefit of higher bitrate and

deeper color information.

But once you run it through YouTube compression, it's more than usable as a proper gaming

capture device, without needing a computer to do the recording - just a 2.5" hard drive

or SSD.

I just wanted to experiment and play around.

I expected the Ninja 2 to look much better upscaled, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Easy Modes in Video Games | Is it bad, and why does it even matter? - Duration: 7:38.

I've talked about difficulty in games before and mentioned that I prefer playing games

that have a bit of a challenge to them.

Looking at games that are inherently viewed as hard, difficult, challenging or even unfair,

it's not rare to see a discussion thread belittling casual gamers for playing on, or

asking the developer for, an easier mode.

Dark Souls has been a prime example of this for years.

So would making a game easier, as an option to choose from, be really all that bad?

Difficulty by itself is not a measure set in stone.

A game that I find very challenging, might be a cakewalk for someone else and vice versa.

Let's take an established franchise like Monster Hunter for example.

With every new iteration of the game, you have elitists scream left, right and center

proclaiming how the series is going to hell, as it's getting

easier and easier with each new installment.

I personally started playing Monster Hunter with Portable 3rd on the PSP, which was by

far one of the most frustrating experiences, learning how to play the damn game.

There were so many things that I did not understand at all.

Like "Why does this stupid bear not die, after I've been bashing his head in with

my dinky sword and shield for about 10 minutes now?".

Monster Hunter is all about strategy and the longer

you play a series, you might forget that, as it's an inherent skill you've learned now.

Someone starting out, will have a hard time.

When I went into Monster Hunter 3G, it did feel a lot easier.

I literally went from Advanced High Rank quests in Portable 3rd, to village Low Rank quests

in 3G.

Yes, this does feel like it's getting a lot easier, because I, as a person, the player,

have gathered all that experience, with the previous games, already.

The learning curve is gone, the only thing you're learning now, are new monster behaviours,

which make up a fraction of what you had to learn the first time around.

A new player coming in, would obviously experience this in a very different manner.

The first game of any series you'll play, is most likely going to be the hardest one.

It doesn't really matter if you start with the first release within a franchise, or if

you step in a bit later.

When I was playing Portable 3rd, I kept reading topic after topic, about how this is the easiest

Monster Hunter ever created.

I am not even trying to disprove this statement, as I've never played any of the previous

Monster Hunters and I really dislike what 2nd Gen Monster Hunter games look like, including

Monster Hunter Frontier Z.

The same statements popped up once again with Monster Hunter 4, because without G-Rank it's

too easy, which btw is a seriously dumb statement, and again with Monster Hunter X.

So it's almost tradition, that whenever a new game pops up in a franchise, elitists

from previous games, will keep complaining of how easy everything has become.

The same thing applies Dark Souls, but there's a difference.

Although neither Monster Hunter nor Dark Souls offer a difficulty setting, they both have

difficulties.

In Monster Hunter, you have Hunter Ranks, which allow you to accept more challenging

quests.

You start in Low Rank, work your way up to High Rank and in versions that include G-Rank,

you go up to that, then depending on the game, once you reach Hunter Rank 100, there might

be even tougher quests out there for you to attempt.

Dark Souls, being an RPG, works a bit different.

Since you follow a string of events, your progress inevitably has you facing more challenging

obstacles, but there there are several ways to make this easier.

Monster Hunter is designed around multiplayer, thus attempting to do Guild Hall quests on

your own, with Rank appropriate gear, can be quite the challenging task.

The bosses in Dark Souls on the other hand, are designed with a single player in mind.

You do have the option to summon in other players and partake in jolly cooperation and

unlike Monster Hunter, the bosses' HP in Dark Souls do scale with the amount of Phantoms

you've summoned, but and that's a big butt, the AI, really can't handle more than

one target.

So with summons, you usually end up squashing the bosses like little bugs.

Summoning in Dark Souls is the easier option to play the game.

Personally, during my first playthrough of any single-player game that puts a heavy emphasis

on exploration and boss battles, I would never want to play with random online players, for

several reasons, for one: I don't want to get spoiled by stuff they might have, stuff

that I haven't seen before, be it weapons, armour, ways to cheese enemies, etc., secondly,

I enjoy the triumph and the feeling of success that goes along with overcoming seemingly

insurmountable odds.

So long as Fromsoftware gives me the option, to play completely offline, I am happy.

Does that mean, I judge other people for playing a game, with an option, that has been intended

by the developers, to be used by their players, such as summoning in help from other players?

No, why would I?

How does that affect my time with the game?

If the game didn't have an online option at all, they could cheat themselves into god

mode with infinite health and it still doesn't detract from my gameplay experience.

So yeah, technically speaking there is a difficulty switch, of some sorts.

So what if the devs decided, to patch in an easy mode, that can be selected from the main

menu, before you start a new character?

For a game like Monster Hunter, I think it would be close to impossible.

Because Monster Hunter is basically a party game, that gained traction through having

you play with your friends.

You'd meet up, link up your PSPs and go hunt some monsters.

You'd grind out all the materials until all of you have the necessary equipment to

go on and fight the next monster, to repeat it all over again.

Let's be honest here, Monster Hunter is extremely repetitive, you're fighting the

same monsters, over and over and over until you get what you need, to upgrade your Hunting

Horn to level 5 and it's really only fun, because you get to play with people, which

in the best case scenario, are you friends.

Through all that knowledge you've gathered, yes you can absolutely go fight the really

tough monsters all by yourself, but if the design choice, to have this game be a multiplayer

experience in the first place wasn't there, most people would never even have played long

enough, to even want to get to that point, as this formula just wouldn't hold in a

single player environment.

Going back to Dark Souls, an easy mode would help a lot of people to stick with the game.

I think a few concessions would need be made, like disabling trophies and achievements,

as well disabling, or at least limiting online interaction with standard difficulty players…

and although this part could cause problems, which is of course the segmentation of online,

which would limit overall player interactions, I think it's still not a bad idea to have

that option.

Now if the devs says, an easy mode is not necessary, that's fine, but a random elitist

just outright dismissing the question, if it's a possibility to maybe include it,

claiming that casuals, or sorry, casuls are not needed… is dumb.

Casual gamers, are what allow the video game industry to keep growing.

Why do you want to strip developers of the cash, provided by casual gamers, buying their

games, which the developers need, to keep paying their employees, who make the damn

games?

The elitist thought process of either "git gut or get the fuck out" I never quite understood,

why would you not want casuals, to play the game you love?

More people playing the game, means higher sales numbers, which means it's much more

likely you're going to get more, be it in form of extra content down the line, a sequel,

a spiritual successor, or another company carrying on the design philosophies with a

completely new IP.

The most recent game I've played through was Hollow Knight, which also doesn't offer

a difficulty setting.

I didn't really think the game to be difficult or challenging, well that was until I got

to the Super Meat Boy area aka White Palace, but that's a different story…

The reason why I didn't see it this way, is because this is the type of game I grew

up playing.

Everything in Hollow Knight, felt extremely natural to me, but that just harks back to

the point of having previous experience.

Just because I didn't find it to be too difficult, doesn't mean that everyone would

be the same.

So yes, I do think an easy mode, isn't a bad idea.

Would I want to use it?

No, so please don't force any type of trophies into that mode, as some people have no interest

in playing it.

Those that do want to play the game on easy though, why shouldn't they have that option?

What do you think, is an easy mode really that bad, if there's nothing that forces

you to use it?

Create background using CSS. JavaScript/CSS Game: #2.12 the hidden Gems - Duration: 8:08.

Everything that can be implemented using CSS, finally must be done with CSS.

I'll show you how to create something awesome using CSS only.

[Music playing]

Hi!

Let's talk today about CSS3 features, such as background, gradient and multi background.

We'll use them in order to add a background to our game.

I'm Anatol and you are watching the Good Parts of the FrontEnd development.

We're starting with the CSS3 patterns background collection created by Lea Verou.

Here you can find a lot of different examples how to create a really good-looking background

based on CSS only.

The background CSS property is a shorthand for setting the individual background values

in a single place in the style sheet.

The following properties are applicable: clip, color, image, origin, position, repeat,

size, attachment.

We'll use just several of them.

You can apply multiple backgrounds to elements.

These are layered atop one another with the first background you provide on top and the

last background listed in the back.

Only the last background can include a background color.

Using CSS gradients lets you display smooth transitions between two or more specified

colors.

Browsers support two types of gradients: linear and radial.

To create a linear gradient, set a starting point and a direction along which the gradient

effect is applied.

You also define color stops, the colors you want to render smooth transitions among.

Radial gradients' syntax is similar to that for linear gradients.

You can specify the gradient's ending shape and size.

By default, the ending shape is an ellipse with the same proportions than the container's

box.

You specify color stops the same way as for linear gradients.

Using nothing more than these three features we can create really fancy backgrounds.

Let's dive in the code.

[Music playing]

Let's take a markup and styles, created in the previous episode.

Define a dotted background

Define a background with a picture similar to a checkerboard

Define a background with a Japanese ornament

Define a background with stripes

Define a background with a tablecloth like a picture

Don't stop and use your imagination!

So, with a combination of different CSS properties you can implement a plenty of effects.

Everything can be done automagicaly!

Easy, isn't' it?

How we built it: Next Games' global gaming platform in the Cloud - Duration: 9:06.

Today, on how we built it,

we take a look at how you can build and run a highly connected

global application platform.

We go behind the scenes with Finnish gaming company, Next Games.

We're going to take a look at their technical architecture

that can simultaneously support multiple games

and provide core back-end services.

Their platform services architecture using Azure

and the proactive measures they've put in place to prevent gamer fraud.

I'm joined today by Next Games co-founder and CTO

Kalle Haiitola, welcome.

Thanks for having me on Mechanics.

A lot of folks might be familiar with Walking dead

No Man's Land, the game that you built.

How did you go about architecting that using Azure?

Well, at the end of the day

these are all highly connected applications.

Where users connect to our back-end services

with their iOS and Android devices.

So let me show you.

So when the user connects to our player state service

they are created with the unique ID.

That ID is used to recreate that playerstate later on when they come back into the game.

And when we load the player

we put it in memory and keep it there until they end their session.

And once the session ends, we store them into our storage

which is in Azure.

And then as you progress for game as a player, I know that other things start to light up.

Yeah that's true.

So when you get far enough in the game, we can open up your social features of the game

such as Guild and chat.

And if you want to accelerate your progress within the game

we give you the ability to purchase in-app purchases.

And of course as these kind of mobile games needs to be evolving all the time,

we need to be able to give the players new content constantly.

For example with the Walking Dead game,

we can provide new content right after each episode has aired.

So when you think about this beyond gaming

you've got some services like content, payment systems, a social platform here

and the statefulness of the app.

So this applies beyond just gaming to maybe

a line of business app or the next banking app.

This is something that anybody can kind of use as a developer, right?

Yeah that's true.

The similar model would work for any of those applications.

We have actually used micro services to build our system.

Those services run on top of cloud services

which are fully managed virtual machines in Azure.

And in addition to those we have an analytic service

which we use to monitor and see what the players are doing within the game.

And we also have game economics

which we use to change values within the game

so we can introduce new content or have a different value for resources, for example.

So all of these are broken into micro-services.

And they are using Azure cloud services worker roles.

But what are some of the other Azure services that you're connecting to via these micro services?

One of the key features of the use is Azure blob storage

which we use to save the players state for later on.

That's very good for fast file access and scalability.

The other one that we use is a table storage

that we use to store the social messages so we can replay them in a certain order.

The other very fundamental service that we use is the Cosmos DB.

That is used for retrieving players

with very specific properties

such as locating them by their social IDs

like Facebook, Google or Game Center.

So all these services here are really spanning the entire set of micro services,

cloud services, worker roles, Cosmos DB, and storage.

Are there things that you're doing that maybe only hit a subset of these micro services?

Yes there is.

We use Azure event hub

in order to send our analytics events from the players state into our analytics services.

With that we then actually see how the players are interacting with the game.

So what might you change then if you're monitoring how players are playing the game

from your seat in Finland?

Well for example we can see if a certain level is too difficult for players.

In the past we have removed some of the levels when we saw players trying

to get through those levels over 200 times.

200 times is a lot.

You don't want people to get frustrated with the game and then eventually leave the platform.

So you got to build that in.

I know there are some other services that you're using

to maybe talk to a subset of these micro services as well.

Yeah we use notification hub

in order to inform the players when new content is available

like new challenges starting, new events or new campaigns.

For us it's more like a player retention driver.

So really a scalable set of all these different services that you have here.

Event hub, notification hub, Cosmos DB, and Azure storage.

But you've got a lot of people connecting to the game in real time and a lot of peak traffic.

How do you handle all of the demand in terms of users coming in from all over the world?

Well, scalability is one of the basic promises of cloud.

And we are a building cloud company.

So to show you here our real-time monitoring tools that we built on top of Azure.

And here you can see those blue dots representing players that are returning back to the game

And the pink dots are new players joining the game.

And the red dots are players actually playing against each other.

As you can see we have thousands of players connecting into our back-end at any given second.

This is a real-time live view of player activity

but I'm curious how many countries and how many locations are people actually coming in from?

What Azure regions are you using to manage the game?

Our players span across 166 countries.

But we drive all the traffic into only one Azure region.

But in the future we want to expand that into multiple regions by using Azure service fabric.

So how would you manage traffic in terms of the connections coming in and out of the game itself?

Because you've got all these folks coming in all over the world.

There's got to be a massive toll in terms of the traffic management side.

what are you doing there?

Well I can actually show you.

So when the player is connecting to our back-end

we first direct them into Azure Traffic Manager.

which is the first level of load balancing.

From there they get to pick one of the cloud services.

And that will do a second level of load balancing

by selecting a specific instance.

That instance will return the instance specific address back to the client.

And then we use SignalR to connect into that very specific instance with that address.

So in case we can get interruption into the connection

For example if we need to reconnect.

We can use that address to get directly back into that very specific instance.

So the client basically has a direct line of connectivity back to the assigned instance

in case the signal actually drops or the connection gets lost.

But, what happens if I'm I'm a developer maybe

and I crack open the binaries and start modifying the code

because I want to gain status or maybe I get more resources while playing the game.

We started our fraud prediction from the one thought that we never trust a client.

So I can actually show you.

In a case that the player has been able to jail break a route on your phone

and gain access into our source code,

and in that way be able to actually add more resources into their game or get some other advantages.

We run the same logic on the client and on the server side in parallel.

So whatever you do in the client will also happen on the server side.

The server will then determine it is just true or false.

If it's true we just let the player continue with their gameplay.

But if it's false, we will force the client to reload and get the latest state from the server.

So very creative use of cloud services to keep the clients honest

in terms of the values that they're returning back to the server.

As a big fan of the walking dead and a player of the game,

I know you do a lot of work in terms of keeping that in sync with the TV series

What do you do about delivering new content?

Well as an example, when a new season starts

we can actually get the information of what is going on in that season beforehand.

And use that to create new environments, characters, weapons, and items that the players can use.

And then we load that information into our dashboard and from there we distribute that

to our control which is cloud service into different end points.

In case of video content.

For example exclusive content and sneak peeks of upcoming episodes,

we use Azure media services

that allows the client to load the video into their devices.

In case of new environment or characters

or items that they can use within the game.

We load them in the CDN and also into our front servers

which are running on multiple cloud services.

Clients can access them and show the new and content for the player.

A lot of the concepts that we covered today

in terms of media delivery, CDN, the front end services, the payments we saw earlier.

All of these things are services that you might use across any other type of app beyond games.

Any tips for the folks watching

in terms of how to architect their apps and their platforms using the cloud?

Definitely, you should start off by doing modern architecture for the cloud.

Don't do lift and shift.

Secondly, always build for scale.

So don't try to get things to work and then try to figure out the scale later.

And thirdly, load test a lot.

Visual Studio online has great load testing tools and you should definitely use them.

So build cloud native, build for scale and make sure that you are load testing.

Really great tips Kalle.

Game Storytelling Project - Duration: 3:01.

Hi my name is Yery Alvarez and I want to talk about a video game proposal, one of the most recognized and internationally famous characters in the 80's

E.T The famous extraterrestrial who won the hearts of many

Who has not met E.T a most blockbuster movie of the great producer Steven Spielberg who collected millions and more known by many countries !!

Now fans and followers of E.T want you to return in the world of video games

The theme of the video game is to keep E.T alive the story unfolds in a dark forest where E.T tends to find some fungi to stay alive on the planet Earth

But not only to find them but to pass obstacles by the dark forest!

As in the movie, E.T can not be maintained on the ground floor in the video game the player must keep E.T alive and we have designed it through a battery or lifeline.

So these magic mushrooms will not be easy to collect

But not only the mushroom should collect but also collect metal pices to build the Space ship, where you will return home this is the goal of this video game

But this will not be easy besides you must fight against the Guardian of the mushrooms and the agents who will want to catch him.

Remember that E.T also has magic powers and these will help you to pass the obstacles!

The goal and purpose is to keep E.T alive and arm the spaceship to get home

One of the advantages is that this character is recognized by many and to spread the video game we will do it through social networks, You tube and the great company of Microsoft

If this proposal is to your liking do not hesitate to call me or contact me through my email Thank you
