Here's How The Crack Epidemic Brought A City To Its Knees - Duration: 3:34.

My name is Aaron Williams.

I'm a journalist from Compton, California.

I've been researching the effects of the crack epidemic for over a decade.

Crack is a processed version of the party drug cocaine

in rock form.

I did try it and from that moment on I was chasing the initial high.

It goes directly to the pleasure center of your brain.

There's just no escape from it once you're addicted.

Everybody lost their minds.

[Song Lyrics] One dollar, two dollar, three dollar, four, and the young baby momma and

her daughter going broke.

Increase violence, gangs, riots.

The Crips and the Bloods have swarmed eastward.

The use of crack increasing quickly.

Fearlessly setting up an open-air drug market.

The reaction of mainstream America was, "Oh my God.

"Oh my God.

We have to fix this immediately."

They work every day to plot a new and better way to steal our children's' lives.

[singing] Just say no...

That was right around the time that D.A.R.E. came out.

The egg and the skillet.

This is your brain on drugs.

...danger of crack.

Thousands of dollars in cash and firearms...

Enough is enough.

Trying to fix things without knowing how they got broken in the first place is a great way

to break them worse.

Ah!

Ah!

You had Ronald Reagan getting involved.

Retribution must be swift and sure for those who decide to make a career of praying on

for those who decide to make a career

of praying on

the innocent.

You have the militarized police.

I've seen plenty of raids in my lifetime.

If you've ever seen the movie 'Straight Outta Compton' where the tank rams in the door,

that was right around the corner from my house.

I remember thinking, 'That's a house.

People live there.'

If you were caught with rock cocaine they were getting these sentences for twenty-five years.

You've got to have mandatory laws.

You've got to show people if you arrest them, we're going to keep them.

Put handcuffs on her, get her out of here.

People are going in

at twenty and coming out at forty-five.

How are we suppose to build a community that way?

You had this proxy war going on.

A Senate investigative panel found that there were people associated with the CIA who were

involved with drug trafficking.

One of the motives was to raise money for the Contras in Nicaragua.

Tonight I can report to you that we've made much progress.

It's almost hard to comprehend what might have been if not for this crack scourge that

raced through Los Angeles and other major cities.

Today, the perception is of crack users as losers.

We still need treatment programs.

And I think that we still need to decriminalize.

Our Mayor, Aja Brown, has done such a tremendous job of bringing jobs and employment back to

Compton.

Crime rate has gone down.

Things can and should and will get better.

But we have to work for it.

Roll Call Reporters Asked Members of Congress To Release Their Tax Returns. Here's What They Found - Duration: 2:49.

All this year there's been as a persistent call for President Trump to

release his tax returns. It's been mainly Democrats but also Republicans are starting to say the same thing.

It was a campaign issue, it's now an issue after the

campaign but members of Congress hadn't really had that similar pressure put on them

This project started with a simple question: how many members of Congress

are willing to release their own tax returns? And what we found is that hardly

any of them will or do. We sent letters to every member of Congress. Every member

of the House, every member of the Senate. We sent them to their key staff members

just to make sure that somebody in the office saw them and we sent out

follow-up requests over a period of three or four weeks.

So I designed an interactive database where anyone can

go on and look at all the tax returns that we collected.

It's putting together in one place as many tax returns as we can

find from members of Congress, so we're letting people from all over the country

go to find their representative, take a closer look at their taxes and be able

to scrutinize where their representatives' interests are.

Only 37 members actually

replied and only six actually gave us their tax returns we made it pretty

clear in our request that if they gave us the returns we would then publish it

with personal information redacted.

We have I think about 20 right now if we

find any more after this is published we're going to put them online. If members

of Congress suddenly decide they want to disclose theirs we'll be happy to put them

online after it's published as well. There are a very small number of members of

Congress who have made a habit of releasing their tax returns every year.

One high profile number who has released his and has been doing this several years is

the minority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, who posts them on his website.

Thune has posted several years of his tax returns online as well and we were able to get those.

We also asked members where they stood on on whether Trump should

release his returns and that members from both parties though don't want to

make the same information on their their tax returns public.

We found about 200 - 250 members who have publicly called for the president to

release his tax returns which is interesting because only a handful of

those, probably less than ten, had actually released their own tax returns

We found a big discrepancy there, you know, members of Congress who who are

willing to say that the president should release his returns; overwhelmingly the

you know, time and again when Congress members are asked to release their

returns they say no.

Ozzy Man's Tour of VidCon 2017 - Duration: 6:59.

Hey young folks, we're in Anaheim for VidCon, and look I'm gonna go around

I'm gonna give you a bit of a tour in case you couldn't make it this year,

or you're not gonna make next year, or you don't give a fuck in general

So let's go see what's happening

Over here you see there's a Ferris wheel

Look after the runnings, look after, yeah, nah,

You gotta be careful in there, there's stampedes of young kids at any time

*kids and teens screaming and chanting "Logan"*

It's tough when you're over 30 at these events, 'cuz you got not a fucking clue who everyone is screaming over

*screams*

No, not a fucking clue

As an over 30s person attending VidCon, I'm a bit worried about occupational health and safety at times

Over here is the ball pit

Yesterday, there was someone that was stuck

"People getting stuck in the ballpit, unfortunately"

As you can see, there's about three lifeguards on duty at the moment

Now I reckon she's gonna make it, I reckon she'll get out, she'll be okay

Yep, there you go, doesn't need a lifeguard, that's pretty good

Ozzy: What do you wanna say to VidCon?

Brunette (1): It's so fun! Blondie (2): It's so bad!

OZ: Yeah?

2: I mean, it's so fun! Everyone is getting kicked out

1: It's really fun OZ: Who got kicked out?

Both: Corinna, Bobby, [Bryce], [Bryce] (???)

OZ: Woah, Bryce and Bryce!

*mouthing* I don't know who they are, I got no idea

1: Blake [Rey], Mario 2: *inaudible*

OZ: Yeah right? 2: So everyone is getting kicked out and *inaudible*

OZ: Well they haven't, they haven't kicked out OzzyMan, have they?

1: Don't know who that is

OZ: Don't know who OzzyMan is? Well they haven't kicked him out so, he'll stay around. That's exciting

Alright, let's keep moving

Got it

Aw thanks, cheers, cheers

In you go, in you go little fella, there you go

Now we're inside the bloody Anaheim Convention Center, and this is really like big

This is a big fuck-off American conference

I mean, this is, this is America Fuck Yeah, I mean this is huge

I'm gonna try getting some free shit

*Music and screams*

WOOOHOOO

Fucking bullshit

Ahh! At least it's fine, you get a bit of a slide on the way down, so yeah, if you fuck it up, you get a bit of a ride

Fuck yeah, that's pretty good

Yep, that was a warm-up, that was a warm-up

Just a warm-up, it's two warm-ups

She's warming up enough to go walk around

Really psyching himself out. Here he go- OHH

Get outta here! That's bullshit!

That's a highlight. That's a VidCon highlight

Secret parents' lounge, so like, get away, escape, like get pissed

It's good

OZ: What's your name? J: Joey

OZ: Joey, how's it going, OzzyMan, nice to meet you J: Ozzy, pleasure

OZ: Is this your first VidCon? J: It's my third

OZ: Your third? He's a veteran! This man's a veteran

OZ: What are you drinking? J: Uh, just *inaudible*

OZ: Alright, alright, and how long have you been in here today? J: We got here since opening

OZ: Yep, and you've been in the bar since opening? J: Oh no *laughing* no no no, we just, I just came right now

*loud screams*

Fuck me dead

*loud screams again* FUCK me dead

Yelling everywhere

*loud screams* Fuck me dead!

Now it's time to just take it down a notch, take a breath, and learn

Uh, "Crash Course in Set Design" "Video Topics and Techniques: From Research to Upload"

Very important, to do your fucking research, or else, you could end up looking like a dickhead

"Making of a SciShow Video"

I don't know what that one means

"Content Strategy for Brands"

What's you content strategy? Have you thought about it? You probably haven't thought about it

So if you're watching this and you're part of a big brand, you should have gone to that one

It's finished, let's move on

"No Budget? No Problem"

So if you're poor as fuck, you got no money but you know, you wanna entertain people, it's not a problem

"Drawing the line: How Much is Much?"

How far do you go, is what I'd imagine that's about

You know, do you talk about politics? Do you talk about Violence? Do you *inaudible due to people talking*

Fuck shit piss cunt motherfucker, do you say that stuff?

You probably don't, but I do!

"5 PM to 6 PM: Let's Talk About, um, About Sex"

Let's go check it out

I'm here with bloody Rudy Rock, and he's getting into fidget spinners as well. He's been converted

Alright, our work is done here, so um yeah, we're gonna call it a fucking day

And um you know, it's been turbulent. There's been highs, there's been lows

Fucking bullshit

We've had some close calls running into famous people, don't know who the fuck they are

And um yeah you know, the parents' bar, that was a fun time

I wonder how Joey's going, I don't know, he's probably still having a drink

He's like "Yeah I just come here 4:30 pm", he was there at 8 am I reckon

Look it's been good, I've had a good time, and uh, gonna fuck off back to the hotel,

have a Panadol and a mid-strength beer, and a bit of a nap

Here's What It Actually Takes to Be a NASA Astronaut - Duration: 3:59.

When NASA started recruiting for its first astronaut class in 1959, it had no idea what

it was looking for because it didn't know what was going to happen to the human body

in space.

Basically the agency needed people used to flying dangerous missions in untested vehicles

while giving real-time feedback to engineers… which pretty much narrowed the pool to test

pilots.

President Eisenhower stipulated that due to the potential top-secret nature of this endeavour,

they should be in the military.

And this led to the basic qualifications for the first batch of astronauts.

Military pilots who'd graduated from a test pilot school holding a bachelor's of engineering

with at least 1,500 hours flying jets under their belts.

And we ended up with these guys: three Navy pilots, three air force pilots, and one marine

pilot all with the flight time and bachelor's degrees.

This was basically the way things went until 1964 when NASA shifted to reward academic

merits, looking at PhDs instead of flight time.

The fourth group was the first of scientist-astronauts.

Two were qualified civilians and the others had military backgrounds.

NASA's needs were changing.

With long-duration lunar missions and even longer space station flights in the works,

the agency was starting to need real scientists in space.

During the Apollo-era, untested and new was the name game and the crews were just three

men so each astronaut had to do everything -- be a test pilot, an engineer, a scientist...

But with the pending beginning of the shuttle program, crews were larger, missions were

longer, and the technology was designed to be reused so it would become familiar over

time.

This meant NASA could look at astronauts not as jacks of all trades but specialists.

Some would fly the shuttle and others would have specific roles on missions.

To this end, incoming classes of astronauts didn't divide people by type.

They took all types under one umbrella: pilots and what NASA called mission specialists.

And that's still what NASA does when recruiting, though occasionally there are payload specialist

who are trained for a specific flights.

But this doesn't mean there aren't strict criteria for astronaut hopefuls of either

type.

The current base requirements from NASA say candidates need to hold a bachelor's degree

in science or math and have at least some jet experience under their belt.

They have to be able to pass a physical exam, have at least 20/20 vision, blood pressure

below 140/90 at rest, and stand between 5 foot 2 and 6 foot 3.

From there, the special skills are taught, things like military water survival, SCUBA

in anticipation of spacewalks, and specific training for their individual mission.

Since 1959, NASA has had some 350 American men and women join its astronaut corps.

They've done a combined 306 spacewalks over 150 missions.

And new groups aren't recruited regularly.

NASA brings in astronauts on an as-needed basis.

So with all that you might think that astronauts are a highly skilled trade and paid as such,

right?

Not exactly.

Job openings for astronauts are announced online at USAJOBS, the site for US civil service

positions alongside listings for aviation safety inspector, internal revenue agent,

dental officer for the prison system, and food inspector.

And the pay is equivalent.

That means the annual salary can be anywhere between 50 and 114 thousand dollars.

The qualifications for astronauts have loosened but haven't changed all that much since

1959.

The latest class of 12 astronauts has three recruits from the Navy, one Marine, one from

the Air Force, and one from the Army.

The other six are civilians.

All have bachelor's degrees and five have doctorates.

And only six among them already have flight experience.

So flying in space is awesome and badass, but it's not glamorous and you kinda gotta

be a badass nerd to do it.

James Bond Summer Style Essentials | Dress Like 007 - Duration: 10:48.

James Bond Summer Style Essentials [0:00:00]

Oh, did I get you?

Gentlemen, summer style tips James Bond edition.

Since 1953, Ian Fleming's fictional character James Bond has had a huge impact on menswear.

Today's video, I'm going to talk about ten items that you want to incorporate into

your wardrobe this summer so that you too can look like James Bond.

[Music] Gentlemen, before I get into the ten items,

let me lay down three foundational rules.

Number one, keep it simple.

We're talking about solid colors, small patterns, timeless styles.

One thing I love about James Bond, you go back and you watch a movie made twenty, thirty,

forty years ago, maybe except for the 1970's, he did a pretty good job of keeping things

timeless.

Literally, Sean Connery can walk out on one of those movies and he will still look good

today.

Foundational rule number two to looking like James Bond this summer, perfect fit gentlemen.

You've got to nail it.

Casual does not equal sloppy.

Take your clothing to a tailor, find a brand that works for your body type.

Foundational rule number three is to buy the best clothing that you can afford.

This is hard for many of us because we have this mentality that clothing should be cheap.

Think differently, look to buy something that you will love, it gets a little bit better

with time.

Shoes especially, but also some of your knit wear, maybe looking at certain shirts that,

yes, cost twice as much as what you would normally spend, but it looks so much better

on you, the quality you can clearly see it.

All right, gents time to get into those ten core wardrobe items so that you can dress

like James Bond this summer.

Now, you may be wondering all the pictures all the images all the clothing you're going

to see in this video wear is it coming from.

Gentlemen, this is coming from the same place that James Bond gets its clothing, the Ministry

of Supply.

Yes, the Ministry of Supply is the paid sponsor of this video and they are a real company.

Go check them out, I'm going to link to them down in the description.

I'm going to have a discount code for you there.

It's a limited time discount code, but I've worked with this company for two years.

They were inspired by what they read in the Ian Fleming novels.

And, guys this company just it does amazing things with its clothing.

This shirt right here, this is the Apollo 2.

I'm now wearing the Apollo 3.

And I can tell you this Apollo 2 I had for probably a year, a year-and-a-half.

I wore this a hundred, a hundred and fifty times especially when I was travelling.

It has this temperature regulating fabric that actually can cool you down.

It's odor-resistant.

It has a stretch to it.

I can tell you this was the most comfortable shirt I would ever wear.

The Apollo 3, they have made the collar even better.

It's got this actually non-removable shirt stays in here, they have adjusted it.

They heard from a lot of people that, you know, I never iron this, I've never – I

put this right out of the packaging.

This is how it looks on me, it's got a great drape.

It is – it uses this really cool fabric, it's not cotton, it's not linen, so you

never have a wrinkling issue.

I love what this company does with all of the clothing.

I'll talk about some of the other pieces their polos and some of their shorts as well.

One thing I love about the shorts is that they don't use buttons, they actually use

a snap like this.

Why is this innovative?

Because no matter how you pull on this, it's not going to break off.

The back pockets I really love.

They actually don't have any buttons on them, they're huge actually except when

you're not using them.

You can't even tell there's a pocket.

Little things like this.

Guys, go check them out, Ministry of Supply, one of my favorite companies.

I've got a great discount for you down in the video description.

Go check them out.

Item number one in your James Bond summer wardrobe, gentlemen, the classic polo.

So, what makes a classic polo?

It's going to be the color right here.

It's going to be a relatively soft color, but it's going to be a pronounced very clear

color nonetheless.

In the front, we're going to see about a quarter open with two to four most likely

three buttons.

We're also going to see short sleeves and at the bottom of the shirt, we're going

to see basically a straight cutoff.

This means it can be worn tucked or untucked.

James Bond summer wardrobe item number two, gentlemen, the casual button down.

So, I love a good casual button down because it can be dressed up, it can be dressed down.

It can be worn tucked, untucked, you can roll the sleeves, you can leave them down, you

can find a wide variety of different fabrics out there it's made from with patterns in

the fabric with different colors.

Now, I would keep it simple, I would keep it classic, I would keep it something that's

a bit muted, that way you can wear it with a wide variety of other pieces in your wardrobe.

But, what's cool about shirt like this is literally have on a bathing suit instead of

throwing on a t-shirt, you can throw on that casual button down maybe button one or two

buttons, walk around the beach and you're going to look better than a guy just simply

with a t-shirt on.

Item number three in your James Bond summer wardrobe, gentlemen should be dress shirt.

You want to be looking for a company that makes fabrics that are specifically made to

regulate heat, hence the Apollo 3 by Ministry of Supply or go out there look for linens,

get them custom made.

Find a cotton that has a gauze weave, but find something that's going to be breathable.

[0:04:53] Guys, it makes a huge difference and there

are going to be events that you need to wear a dress shirt.

A dress shirt is not a casual button down.

Dress shirts do not usually have pockets.

Yes, sometimes you'll see one pocket, but normally they shouldn't have any pockets,

they're not going to have any epaulets, they're going to be of a solid color they're

always going to be long sleeve.

They're always going to be meant to be tucked in, so that's a key.

If you're looking for shirt and if it has, you know that slang in the front and in the

back area, it is meant to be tucked in.

If it goes straight across and it has like a wild patterns to it, it's probably more

of a casual button down.

Item number four in your James Bond summer wardrobe, a light colored sports jacket or

a blazer.

Why?

It's hot.

You're going to say, Antonio, I can't wear something like that.

Well, yes, you can if it's made from the right material that's breathable, that's

going to let air pass through it.

It actually will protect you from the sun.

And, okay, you live in Houston, Texas.

Everyone says Houston is hot, but how often are people hanging outside in Houston, Texas?

Not very often.

They're in an air-conditioned building.

And often times you're at an event and you want to look good, but even if you're going

to be outside, you can actually wear that moisture wicking dress shirt that I was just

talking about, wear a jacket over it that's breathable made from a material that's going

to allow the air until the heat dissipate.

You can find particular jackets they are going to be unlined.

You can find jackets, again, Ministry of Supply it has jackets which are made specifically

to actually be vendible, they're going to be seamless, and they're going to be made

from material that's going to allow the heat to dissipate.

Item number five on this list, gentlemen, lightweight trousers.

Notice I didn't say jeans.

How many James Bond movies have you seen them rocking jeans?

Not too many.

The reason it doesn't is that lightweight trousers made from a tropical weight wool

or even a synthetic material that's specifically designed for heat, they're just going to

look so much more stylish.

And you want to look maybe at light to medium grays, maybe look at light to medium blues,

you can bring in tans, a wide variety of the browns, you can even bring in white.

What you want to pay attention to with these type of trousers though is you want to make

sure that the fit is spot on.

Maybe look for something that is a stretch material, hence why I like a lot of synthetic

ones out there that made specifically to deal with heat.

Now, I'll link to some down in the description.

And now, let's transition into shorts.

Yes, I know James Bond didn't wear shorts very often in the movies.

At Thunderball though he wore three pairs, but then, again, he had those cool underwater

fights and he was doing all that diving.

But, one thing I did take from James Bond, look at the function of the shorts.

So, when you're choosing shorts, make sure they're going to function in your wardrobe

from going with very simple classic look that aren't going to draw much attention are

simply going to be functional and keep you cool.

Also, look at the material.

I try to find something with a little bit of stretch in it.

I do also try to avoid the cargo shorts.

For most of us most of the time, we don't need those cargo shorts.

Go with a nice sleek design.

Whenever I'm looking for shorts, I'm looking for something that will fit with the other

items I'm talking about specifically the polos and even the casual button downs.

The next two items I'm going to bring together no-show socks and loafers.

Guys, I love no-show socks.

What's great about them is, yes, you do feel noticeably cooler, you're able to wear

them with your shoes, you're not going to go sockless and start to get sticky feet in

there.

If you're going through security in a hot airport, you can still look great.

Loafers, so much better than running shoes or flip flops, but guys I will say you can

really up your style game.

Try to keep them maybe in the same color with the other shoes in your wardrobe.

This is just going to make it easier to match with the belts and the other leathers in your

wardrobe, but guys look to bring in some loafers.

Item number nine in your James Bond summer wardrobe, a great pair of shades.

What do you guys think?

Do you like this?

I like classis styles, for me aviators, but maybe it's going to be wayfarers.

Whatever it may be for you, make sure to go with something that's timeless that's

classic that works for your face shape.

Item number ten in your James Bond summer wardrobe, gentlemen, a simple straw hat, the

classic design.

Look at pork pies, look at trilbies, maybe look at a fedora, but what you're looking

for is a hat that whenever you put it on, you're going to feel great, it's going

to first function, it's going to protect you from the sun, it's going to keep the

sun off of your face off of the top of your head, but when it comes down to it, practice

wearing it, get used to wearing it.

So then, you start to wear it with confidence, you don't even think about it and you feel

great and you look great in that hat.

All right, gents let's throw in a bonus item.

So, I'm going to talk about the quarter zip sweater.

Yes, I know it's summer, but you should still have a sweater, something that you can

throw on if the temperature drops.

Let's say you're out on the beach, temperature drops 90 during the day to 65 at night, you

want to be prepared not just for yourself, but for others around.

You may have a partner, you may have a wife that she's simply is cold.

Well, you are the hero that night.

So, guys, have fun this summer take in these tips, use them.

Hopefully, I taught you something new.

And go check out Ministry of Supply.

Guys, down in the description I've got a special limited time discount code.

You got to use it or you're going to lose it.

Guys, this company I love.

I have a lot of sponsors, but I will say this is one of the companies that I go and I buy

their clothing.

They are all over, they actually have physical stores now.

These guys are the real deal.

Their clothing is amazing.

Like I said I was super excited when I finally got one of their navy polos.

These things almost always out of stock, so go check them out before they go out of stock.

Use that discount code.

[0:09:57] And, let's have a little bit of fun here

guys.

I want you to go over to the Ministry of Supply which I want you to look through there, let

me know what you would match this with because I've got some extra black shirts.

Now, I don't wear black, but I'm happy to send it out to you guys.

You just need to let me know in the comments specifically which items you would match these

black shirts with over at the Ministry of Supply.

Let me know down there.

I love this company and I highly recommend you check them out you support them because

it's a real deal.

That's it guys.

Take care.

I'll see you in the next video.

Gisele Gambi :: The Next Big Expansion Is Here - Duration: 3:03.

It was February 1999

I wasn't quite 30 yet.

I learned something that initially was

a bit of a slap in the face,

and that is that I create the whole of my own reality,

and I could see that I created a perfect,

a perfect reality,

of rejection, of chaos,

not only huge conflict in relationship,

but also on one hand,

the rejection of her own son,

through his death,

that was shocking.

I felt very powerless in that.

I reached a point where

there was nothing more that I could do.

I went for a run,

then all of a sudden I get a message,

"Stop and meditate."

And I continue running,

and I get the message again, "Stop and meditate."

I close my eyes, and just take a few breaths,

and then,

its like a door opened,

and I could see

and hear into another world.

I heard Joshua, my son, say to me,

"You're here to ignite people's spirits and hearts."

"That's what you did for me, Mum."

"And 11 days was all I needed"

"and now I do the same for you."

But it was the first time that creation

was moving through me,

through him and then through me.

In one moment I felt free.

I actually felt free.

I felt that the power

was no longer out there.

I actually felt that the power was in with, in me.

And so this is a multidimensional conversation we're having.

And when you are able to hold reality

in its multidimensional nature,

then, you can achieve results

that you never would've thought possible.

Here's My Canada: Different Seasons - Duration: 0:24.

What I like about Canada are the seasons, and all of

them are my favorite. In summer, I can go outside

without my coat. In fall, the colour of the maple trees

are beautiful. In winter, I can make giant snowmen, and

when spring comes, I can play with the rain.

And that's why I love all the seasons.

Your Start Here Module in Blackboard - Duration: 4:31.

Online learning and learning management systems like Blackboard are still unfamiliar to many learners, and a Start Here section serves as an important orientation

to your course resources.

If you are teaching a face to face, hybrid or online

course, you can begin by posting an announcement in the course that greets students and directs them to click the Start Here link.

For a face-to-face course that uses a blackboard shell, it is not critical that you have an icebreaker

activity to introduce students and faculty to one another, since you can do that in the classroom environment.

Instead you'll want to provide access to the course syllabus, schedule,

communication expectations, and technology requirements to help students get off to a good start. A

detailed course syllabus will help students understand the course policies and instructor expectations for participation.

Sharing a calendar with all the course assignments lets students plan ahead and organize their time to participate effectively.

You should also take the opportunity to provide a listing of any required resources for the course like an e-text or digital laboratory,

along with any technical support resources that students might need.

You should do all of these things in a fully online course, and more.

Since you do not have that first day of class time to explain things and set the expectations for learners,

you should provide all of the information

and materials that you would normally deliver to your students in your classroom on the first day of the course.

You also have the additional tasks of designing a way for students to become familiar with the course tools and with each other.

In this example I have added an additional folder to the Start Here section of the course called Get Started. In this area

I have students complete common course tasks that introduce the course technologies and

ensure that students have the right technical setup and know-how to participate effectively in the class:

things like reading the syllabus and then taking a quiz on its contents. Or posting in a discussion forum and attaching a document. And,

since many online learners report that they feel isolated and alone in their online courses, I include an icebreaker

activity that introduces students and faculty to one another on a more personal level. I

atart by welcoming students and then providing an overview of the module activities for them, explaining exactly

what tasks they need to do along with the order they should be completed.

After reviewing the Syllabus,

calendar, and e-text, the students complete a learning contract survey or quiz where they recognize that they have read certain course policies and

agree to abide by them during the course.

Next, a

Self-Assessment quiz captures student

perceptions of their own skills in the subject area, what their goals for the course are, and what their career goals are,

so that I know a little bit more about them moving forward.

Lastly I have students create and post a slide show in a self-folio activity that introduces them to their classmates.

We learn about each other's hobbies and leisure activities,

families, current places of employment and future goals.

It's a great way for students to feel more comfortable in the course and with each other. I

create and post my own slideshow as well, and require that students respond to the postings of two or three other classmates.

A

video course introduction is usually associated with an online course,

yet you can provide a video option for your face-to-face or hybrid class as well. In

this example I provide a course overview and introduce the textbooks to students,

I model concepts and techniques taught in the class, and let them see and hear me,

which is particularly effective in online courses.

These strategies and techniques will help you provide a warm welcome for your students and get them off to a good start. If

you have any questions about this video or would like to learn more, please reach out to set up a time to talk.
