Games are supposed to be a form of escapism, but for every Animal Crossing gardening-thon
and moment of quiet contemplation in Life is Strange, there's a swarm of angry bees
- or, you know, apocalyptic freaking storms.
Hella scary, right?
In other words, video games aren't always a serene walk in the park.
Sometimes, they're a near-death experience through a crumbling hellscape.
And while we can appreciate that some video games are built to test a player's skills
- we're looking at you, Dark Souls - we're not above admitting when some of these trials
feel straight-up unfair.
Pull up a chair and get comfortable, because you're about to relive some of the most stressful
video game moments we never want to play again.
Tower of Hera Boss
In one section of the Nintendo classic The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Link
is tasked with scaling the Tower of Hera.
No problem, right?
This is the hero of Time, we're talking about!
One measly tower is nothing to the guy who puts Ganondorf down on the regular.
Yeah, well tell that to Moldorm, the centipede-lookin' boss that you fight on a floating platform
at the top of the tower.
Oh, wait - you can't tell him.
Because he's already knocked you off the platform, sending you reeling down an inconveniently
placed hole.
Sure, getting knocked off the sides of the platform means getting sent down one floor.
However, the hole on the left side of the platform reaches all the way to the tower's
ground level.
The chance that you could be forced to slog your way back up to the top of the tower makes
the fight a high stakes affair - one that you won't be in any hurry to replay once you've
finished it.
Flood in the Library
The Flood is one of the more memorable enemy factions in Halo - hell, it's one of the most
memorable factions in all video games period.
They're also one of the creepiest.
And the nastiest.
And the most infuriating.
Their first appearance is tame, if a tad eerie.
But the second time you meet them - in The Library - well, let's just say we hope you're
wearing your brown pants.
First off, the library is way dark.
Other than a few lights here and there, your most reliable lightsource is your flashlight.
Second of all, the Flood is terrifying.
Not only is it the definition of ugly, but its combat style is far more alien than anything
else you face in the game.
The carriers, for instance, explode when shot, releasing smaller, faster enemies that, while
weak, can overwhelm you if you don't blast them away quickly.
And even after you take out the first couple hordes, more just keep coming.
That's right: in this level, Halo transforms into a straight-up wave shooter.
Good luck not chucking your controller through a window!
Mike Tyson
You've dethroned King Hippo.
You've put Piston Honda in his place.
And Mr. Sandman is seeing stars.
You've finally found yourself toe-to-toe with the man with his name on the cartridge: Iron
Mike Tyson.
Like his real-life namesake, Punch-Out's Mike Tyson throws quick jabs and lightning fast
uppercuts.
He switches up his clobbering cadence too, messing with your dodge timing.
And when Mike hits, he hits hard.
A single uppercut is capable of doing enough damage to send Mac to the mat.
Mike's quickness, unpredictability, and power can leave you flat-footed at the worst possible
moment.
Catching a punch from Mike can throw you off your rhythm and leave you scrambling to recover,
and if you get TKO-ed or lose by decision, you're either pushed down the ranks or forced
to enter a password to restart the fight.
Sounds about as fun as a black eye, doesn't it?
Nemesis Fight
Back in their hayday, the Resident Evil games were legitimately terrifying - due in no small
part to their spooky, claustrophobic settings and grotesque enemies.
But there was another element of the early entries in Capcom's survival horror series
that has us quaking in our boots all these years later: the technical limitations of
the game's camera work.
This is particularly true in Resident Evil 3's fight against Nemesis in the clock tower
courtyard, where poor camera angles mean you spend much of the fight struggling to dodge
rockets that may or may not come flying from off screen.
You can't move and shoot at the same time, either, so shooting means you have to stand
still and take your rocket fuel-flavored medicine just to sneak some damage in.
Yeah, that gruesome, hulking monstrosity is bad - but Resident Evil 3's real Nemesis is
its wonky camera.
Dr. Kahl's Robot
Cuphead is known for more than just its impressive hand-drawn art.
It also has a reputation for being so incredibly difficult that some players couldn't even
get past the tutorial.
Several of the boss fights in Cuphead could have made the list - but one really takes
the cake when it comes to cranking your stress up through the roof.
Yup, we're talking about the fight against Dr. Kahl's robot, a hectic battle that can
last just a bit over two minutes but still manages to cause sensory overload.
In order to best this boss, you'll need to keep a laser focus on what's flying at you
while also laying down fire.
It's a challenge and a half, but if you're able to tough it out and defeat Dr. Kahl and
his robot, you'll have beaten the hardest enemy Cuphead has to throw at you.
Now sit back and treat yourself to a cold one - and a break.
Your thumbs will thank you.
Blades of Hades
There's nothing more frustrating than what you can't see.
If that wasn't made abundantly clear by the whole "Nemesis firing rockets at you from
off screen" thing, you'll get the message when you find yourself facing the Blades of
Hades section from the first God of War.
It's a mix of everything you could find irritating in a 3D platformer, and it isn't even a boss
fight.
To start, Kratos has to make his way across some super skinny walkways located above the
fires of Hades.
The aspiring God-killer extraordinaire may be as badass as they come, but his balance
could use a little work - he constantly tilts back and forth, threatening to fall off the
walkway if you take him too close to the edge.
And to add to the misery, he's forced to deal with spinning blade-mounted platforms that
often come out of nowhere and have no problem knocking him into oblivion - and forcing him
to start right back at the beginning.
If this is the kind of stuff Kratos deals with on the daily, it's no wonder he's such
a Debbie Downer.
