2017.
Good lord.
Not only were most 2017 games amazing, it's also been the year where I've played countless
great gems.
When i realized how much i've discovered the past months, i felt like i needed to make
a series of games i've played throughout the year.
Starting today, December the 1st, until christmas, I will post a video centered around a single
month of the year every two days.
And around new year's eve, I will post a final video depicting the most memorable games
I've played in 2017.
Which means that today, I will cover the games i've played in January.
Without further ado, let's dive right into it.
Just a reminder that i will NOT give my opinion on the games that came out this year, as I'm
going to make a complete video near new year's eve.
So nothing but oldies.
Starting the year off with a fucking punch to the gut with DOOM 2016.
I started playing the game near christmas but i ended up finishing it after new year
and holy crap, this game does kick ass.
Like everybody else, i didn't expect much.
I didn't really have the money to buy it last year when i heard the good stuff and
i was too busy playing the hell out of Brutal Doom already, so when i was finally able to
play it I had one hell of a blast.
The weapons feel good, have an incredibly satisfying feedback, juggling through your
weapons, dodging dozens of bullets, jumping, aiming, destroying the living fuck out of
the most ugly demons of hell, running and jumping around the well conceived level design,
the mad soundtrack beats, the health system, the aggressiveness of the combat, nothing
is disappointing in this hellish fps.
After going through so much in DOOM, i needed some time to relax.
I've touched a lot of Final Fantasy games, but the only one i've ever finished was
Final Fantasy VI.
I started playing playing XV around christmas as well but since XV was so focused and similar
to the first game, i thought it was about time to finish FF1 once and for all.
I played the GBA version, and wasn't too disappointed.
I still appreciate how you're free to name and choose your units, it makes you feel like
you're really free to experiment on whatever kind of strategy you're more into.
There's always those moments, especially near the end, where you HAVE to grind if you
want to get a chance at finishing the game in a kinda balanced setting.
But even story wise i was quite surprised, though it's nothing incredible if you play
it now of all times, but there's a nice endgame twist.
Honestly there's not much to say about FF1, but even today it's interesting to go back
to the roots and play the original.
But it's about time i go back and finish final fantasy xv.
My opinion on this one is still fairly confusing.
I can't deny i enjoyed myself, i didn't expect anything but i'm still dissapointed
anyway, it's weird.
If i had to talk about something that i found enjoyable and memorable, it would be the road
trip.
Hangin out wid the boiz at night, cooking random stuff, button mashing my way through
the combat, still hangin out wid the boiz in the car, kickass music and gorgeous cutscenes,
and then there's all the bad stuff.
Fetch quests that barely matter, linear dungeons that all look the same except for one or two,
extremely forgettable side characters, barely any character development, a story that feels
way too put aside, wonky controls, and…
Truth be told, i don't recommend anyone to play this game.
Everything just feels superficial.
Character dialogues and interactions (between de boiz) feel genuine and well built, but
everything else happens and you don't really know why, or how, and it's never really
interesting.
Nothing interesting or new ever happens, and when they do, they never really make any sense
or leave any kind of impact because…
You still know nothing of what's going on between the characters, the universe and all
that, because, 50% of the time, you're….
Hangin out wid the boiz.
It's like there's a gigantic gap between the side content and the main quest, and it
just feels uncanny.
Like nothing connects those two together, and nothing has depth.
Of course you can understand that when you realize that the fucking game will still get
new content in 2018, when it could have been released complete and all that but…
It's a mess.
Final Fantasy XV has been a titanic mess from the first day it's been announced as final
fantasy versus XIII.
And i can't wait until they move on.
Please, Final Fantasy XVI.
Don't be a disappointment.
Then I played my most favorite of this month.
VA-11 Hall-A. It's gonna be hard talking about everything that's good in barely a
few minutes and I might do a review someday anyway, so I'll keep it short : VA-11 Hall-A
is a bartender simulation visual novel game.
You mix drinks, listen to people, and that's about it.
And that's what's good.
Every character, in contrast to FFXV, are extremely well built and all have really distinct
personalities.
Even the most obnoxious ones are charming.
They have something unique, that you can't find in other costumers.
Everyone else is lovely, from Dorothy's carefree speeches, to the boss' adorable
dorkness, to Jill's composed personality and interesting backstory…
There's plenty of colorful characters in this cyberpunk setting.
The game is rhythmed so well you can't see time pass.
The game looks pretty as hell, the music is varied and fun, everything about this game
screams good vibes while still creating a serious tone and knows how to deal with gravity
throughout it's quality writing.
Everything feels genuine, and the futuristic setting seems extremely possible.
There's no real incredible technological advancements (aside from AIs that are way
too real), but it's more about the social and cultural side of the usual cyberpunk tone
: Things pass by extremely fast, there's a lot going on and everyone lives pretty busy
lives.
It's hard to really point out where it excels at doing that, but the best thing you could
do is simply play it and understand that by yourself.
Get a drink, sit back, and enjoy yourself playing through one of the best things that
came out in 2016.
It's time to dive right into the last game i played in January.
Snatcher.
Snatcher is a SEGA-CD game made by Kojima that first came out in 1988 on the MSX2 and
PC 8801, before it came out as a more complete edition in 1994 in both japan and the west.
After VA-11 Hall-A, i needed more cyberpunk.
That's why i launched this game in the first place, truth be told.
If VA-11 Hall-A is constructed around the social and cultural aspect of cyberpunk science
fiction, Snatcher is a more classic story.
It's…
Literally Blade Runner, actually.
You're playing as Gillian Seed, an amnesic character that joins up the JUNKER HQ to become
a runner.
He believes he has ties to the "Snatcher", a sort of android species that takes the place
of humans to infiltrate humanity and kill them.
Runners are basically detectives looking for these Snatchers.
The game is almost entirely dubbed, features gorgeous animated artworks and pretty good
music.
Other than that the game plays like a more casual classic point & click game.
It's fairly short, but it's pretty well rhythmed.
The game feels pretty cold blooded and harsh sometimes, but it's that weirdness that
makes Snatcher striking and pretty damn advanced and deep for its time.
Some dialogues do feel really weird sometimes, but I'll blame that on the the pretty straightforward
localizations of back then.
If you're looking for more Cyberpunk games to play Snatcher and VA-11 Hall-11 are definitely
things you need to check out.
Okay, well that's about it for January ! It's actually been a kinda long video.
The only 2017 game i played that month was Necrodancer Amplified, but i'll talk about
it in the final video.
For now i hope you enjoyed this video, and I hope i motivated you to play Doom, VA-11
Hall-A and Snatcher.
They're definitely games worth checking out.
If you have any suggestions for the format of these videos, please feel free to tell
me now.
There's still 11 videos left to decide on that.
Though i've probably already got three videos ready for the week.
Hope you enjoyed it, and what about you ? What did you play in January ? Feel free to let
me know and comment ! On that, i'll see you in two days for the games I've played
in february, and I'll see you around !
