Your vehicle may be equipped with a system that elevates driver confidence while
towing, traveling off road or while experiencing inclement weather conditions.
The electronic limited slip differential, or ELSD, monitors input from various wheel
sensors and in the event of slippage, the system counters over steer in turns or
loss of traction due to wheel spin at one of the driving wheels,
then within a fraction of a second, adjust the rear wheel torque distribution
by shifting torque to the wheel with the greatest traction.
The system is a key driving technology component, and
works in coordination with a number of the vehicles mechanics,
including engine throttle responses, transmission shifts, suspension dampening,
and the electronic stability control system.
This helps enhance handling through traction control in inclement weather, but
can also improve vehicle performance by precisely managing application of power
based on available traction.
When towing, it's important since it measures the yaw of the vehicle,
especially during cornering or changing lanes.
The yaw is the rotation around the center point of the vehicle during a turn.
The ELSD system helps keep the rear of the vehicle closely attuned to the direction
of the front wheels, reducing the yaw.
If the yaw is severe enough, it can send the vehicle into a spin.
To help avoid that from happening,
it preemptively increases torque across the axle for increased stability,
to help keep the vehicle under control, and follow the intended path.
Also, while towing, the ELSD system will dampen your vehicle's response to
the independent motion of the trailer.
This will increase control while turning at highway speeds, during lane changes, or
in high wind conditions.
The system is always active and automatically limits slip as needed,
depending on the vehicle conditions and drive mode.
So you don't have to do a thing.
One more thing.
Your vehicle may also have a rear axle locking feature
that locks both wheels together.
Allowing them to turn in unison regardless of how much or
little traction is available to either.
Which can be helpful when navigating over rough terrain, or deep snow, mud, or sand.
To turn it on or
off, press the lock button located just to the right of the drive mode dial.
