Why, hello everybody ! This is Robin ! This video is kinda out of the blue, but I
thought that making a monthly gaming diary video was a better idea than doing everything
at the end of the year.
I made a poll on Twitter to know what you would prefer to have and it turns out making
it monthly seems to suit you as well.
So here I am, in february, talking about the games I've played these past two months
of 2018.
Just like last year, I'll only show games i've played that weren't released in the
current year.
Since January already passed, this episode will be about both January and February too.
So let's get right into it !
The moment the year started for me was the moment when i got back from a trip and finally
got my hands on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
I already owned and played the hell out of the Wii U version with its DLC, and truly
Deluxe makes it all better.
There are a few new items, characters and mechanics, there to make the experience even
more fun and varied.
My biggest complaint however is the fact that they added absolutely no new stages compared
to the complete Wii U version, and as someone who already spent money on the game and DLC
on the previous generation for the same game, saying I'm not bitter would be lying.
But I'll give it a pass, thanks to the new arena and fun innovative pursuit modes.
It's the same game as usual, sure, but it's not a lazy port.
But please Nintendo, all I'm asking for is new circuits.
By far, they're the very reason why Mario Kart is always so fun and varied.
And I'd love to see more.
I've played Okami before, oh for sure, that is on PS2 and for barely 3 hours.
But now, years later, I finally decided to play it more seriously and with an intent
to finish it.
And even so many years later, this game feels as fresh as ever.
Mechanically speaking, Okami definitely feels like it came out from the mind of Bayonetta
and Devil May Cry's creator.
It might play like a classic 3D Zelda game, but the combat system is surprisingly more
complex than you could imagine.
There is a lot of room for customisation, and the weapon choice is varied and lets you
experiment with different kinds of attacks depending on your tastes.
The beautiful world of Okami is filled with things to do, from digging up treasures, feeding
small animals, buying stuff, to doing side quests.
Interestingly enough, even if Okami is one of the most accessible beat'em all games
for newcomers, it's not just a button mashing system.
You've gotta use your celestial brush to inflict special effects on foes.
It could be breaking the enemy's guard with a slash move, covering them in paint to make
them vulnerable, or tons of other things.
The soundtrack and artistic direction for this title are absolutely insane and gorgeous.
It almost looks and sounds cliche to no end, but no matter how cheesy it uses old japanese
folklore, it always feels natural and super endearing.
The dialogues are great and toonish, and the story and lore really make up for everything
else.
Okami is a really good game in almost all its aspects, and it becomes really easy to
ignore its minor quirks and issues.
I must say, I have a complicated relationship
with the Ace Attorney trilogy.
I loved the first episode, it was a very unorthodox game with its own amount of surprises, comedy
and endearing characters.
Justice for All was…
Alright, but I felt like playing an expansion pack of the first episode.
Then I finally played Trials and Tribulations.
I'd heard things about this game since I was 10 years old, and everyone i know who
played it always sold it to me as literally one of the most incredible things that ever
braced humanity.
So I waited years and years of my life to finally play it.
And yes, I did enjoy the third episode.
I found it much better constructed than the first two, but my expectations were so high
that I ended up being disappointed in some ways.
I was getting tired of the same cast, the same kind of case construction and…
I wished for something a bit more innovative or different.
So for that reason, Ace Attorney One is still my favorite, since I had the pleasure of discovering
all its novelty.
So when I finally played Apollo Justice, I was finally pleasantly surprised.
The game finally makes full use of the Nintendo DS's capacity, Apollo and Trucy are adorable
beans, the cases feel way better rhythmed, the music kicks even more ass, and directly
from the first case, I knew this episode would become my new favorite.
Since the game jumped from being made for a game boy advance to actual nintendo DS,
Apollo Justice introduces more investigation options and mechanics, the graphics and soundtracks
are more sharp and detailed, and that definitely made the experience better for me.
The game made me almost enjoy the investigation parts, as they felt way less slow paced than
before with a bigger sense of progression.
Even the cases themselves have a more serious tone to them, and they keep a constant sense
of mystery while conserving the comedy we all know.
A comedy that finally tries other jokes than simply calling Phoenix a dumbass.
Instead of feeling like fill-in cases like the previous games, cases before the final
chapter finally felt interesting, whereas the ones of the trilogy just made me impatient
to see something truly fun to play and read.
Playing through this finally made me feel like i was playing a sequel, instead of another
chapter of the same game.
For that very reason, Apollo Justice is a way more memorable game for me.
Final Fantasy XIV : A Realm Reborn is my first MMO experience since...
Actually, almost forever.
The only ones I've really played are Dofus and Wakfu, and a trial version of World of
Warcraft that i didn't understand at all.
I enjoy the world of Final Fantasy and I felt left out seeing all my friends playing it,
so I decided to give it a try.
Unfortunately it was just as intimidating as I thought.
the moment I started playing i felt overwhelmed with information, textboxes, and things to
do.
I don't really blame the game for that, as I can only judge MMOs from a really personal
standpoint since I don't know anything about them.
I decided to simply play kinda nonchalantly, just accepting whatever side quests I was
asked to do, accomplish them, and fight monsters as a healer.
Of course there's tons of features and options I don't understand at all, and I think I'll
understand them in time, but it was still kinda frustrating, seeing all my friends being
so knowledgeable and straightforward while I was kinda lost.
Going through the first 10 hours of the game was also super boring, and catching up with
everything is extremely tedious and repetitive.
But it was still a way for me to connect with friends and have a bit of fun, and to me,
that's enough.
I don't think I'm ready to invest so many hours and so much energy into an MMO yet,
those games always kinda overwhelm me and I always manage to feel lost considering I'm
constantly trying to understand every single piece of information someone throws at me.
I guess I'm too analytical for that.
But in the end, after playing for a good while and getting used to it all and having fun
making cute screenshots of my Lalafell, i ended up enjoying myself healing everyone
in dungeons while simply following what's going on.
That's fine too.
Hat in Time was such a breath of fresh air.
Done with Mario Odyssey and now a bit gloomy, I needed a bit more modern collect'athon
action.
And so here I am, catching up on this little gem from 2017.
At first I was kinda disappointed, I felt like the first level was way too big for an
introduction to the mechanics, and, sure, the game looks a bit weird and amateur-ish
graphically, it might have a few bugs and quirky details, but everything else is designed
with a love and passion for well done work.
Inspired, and not ripped off.
This is what Hat in Time is, and the reason it's so unique and interesting.
It takes the best from what was done from the Rareware and Gamecube era to mix it all
into one product that feels modern and well conceived.
You are free to explore the different worlds and chapters at your leisure, and never once
does the game ask you to acquire every piece of whatever collectible.
Wanna get everything ? Then go for it.
Just wanna see the end of the levels ? Then do just that.
For what it's worth, Hat in Time is filled with content that never feels lazily implemented.
Everything you do and achieve gives you a unique sense of pride, and you constantly
feel like advancing and going forward, never wasting a second of your time.
The chapters also help get you involved in different level structures and gameplay, going
from stealth missions, to letter delivery, to platform challenges, and even to free roam.
For that reason the game is rhythmed beautifully : Just do what you want, at your own pace
! The unique and colorful universe also helps to install this adorable and endearing atmosphere
and attachment to the characters.
They all feel like they're from a classic nintendo game or cartoon, with enough fresh
ideas to back up the nostalgia it also makes you feel.
If you enjoy good platformers, or simply great games, Hat in Time should not be missed.
After playing so many of those big and long RPGs, I felt like i needed something short
and intense.
Mega Man Zero 3 was the perfect candidate.
Don't expect me to have a different opinion than the one I had while playing Zero 2, as
it's a direct sequel, like the previous one.
However this one implemented some interesting ideas.
The cyber elves are a sort of optional powerup.
You can obtain them throughout the levels, and some of them need to be fed crystals to
be able to use them.
Before this third installment, using them erases them permanently from the game and
you never see them again.
However, this episode tried something different.
Some elves still permanently disappear, but the basic ones can be revived if you feed
them crystals.
This avoids being stuck with no decent elves at all, and it leaves the player with more
options to play the game the way they feel.
They got rid of the useless weapon rank system : No more useless grinding needed to be able
to perform basic combos.
However there's still the same issue as the previous games : the beginning is hard
as nails.
You have no upgrades, no elemental chips, no elves, and no crystals, and the first stage
is, as always, the most brutal.
But once you get past the early game, the levels get more interesting and complex, while
keeping a steady and challenging difficulty.
Even the story is surprisingly good by Mega Man standards, especially the finale.
By far my favorite entry for now.
I'm a huge kirby fan.
Like everyone on earth.
Triple Deluxe is one of the only main entries i had yet to play, and I expected something
similar to every Kirby game i've played : a Pure and intense dose of entertainment.
And like always, Kirby delivers.
It's straightforward, cute, has a great score, pretty graphics, good progression,
an epic finale.
that's Kirby for you.
I feel like people are pretty silent about this series' excellent level design.
Yeah sure, the series rarely invents new ways to play or be different from the previous
entries, and when they try, they're rarely the greatest innovations, like Amazing Mirror.
Though to be fair I'd love to see a game with similar ideas, but we're drifting away
from the topic now.
Triple Deluxe is one of the most classic and representative titles of the entire saga.
The supernova powers help to make the levels feel different from one another, and the bosses
are probably the best ones I've seen.
The roads are clear, and you're rewarded for completing puzzle rooms and figuring stuff
out to unlock sun stones, the collectibles of the game, used to unlock more levels later
on.
Nothing more, nothing less, Triple Deluxe is here to give you fun in the most pure way.
I also played and replayed games from 2017 that I've already talked about plenty in
older videos.
They include Xenoblade Chronicles 2, from which I've made a complete twenty minute
coverage video, Nier Automata and Yakuza 0 which i covered in my ten favorites list,
cuphead coop with a friend and fire emblem echoes, but I talked about that in my Honourable
Mentions video.
And obviously, Celeste, Iconoclasts, as well as the highly anticipated Dragon Ball FighterZ
and Monster Hunter World.
With that, this is the end of this January / February episode.
And i totally did not spend hours on a stupid game just to joke around.
