hello it's Karen Burniston here with an assembly video for one of my die sets
this is die number 1042 the Spinner Square Pop-up and you can check
out all of my designs at KarenBurniston.com
the Spinner Square is such a great little generic die it spins out an arm from
behind the pop-up square it has absolutely no theme whatsoever so you
can decorate this for any occasion normally for my assembly videos I try to
stick with just the pieces that come in the die set but since this die set is so
generic it kind of needed something else so I'm using some of the new tropical
themed dies along with the spinner square for this card today
I've placed the 10 dies that come in the set on my magnet sheet and the first
thing I have to decide is what size card do I want to make I've decided to
do a window card in an a2 long so that means a piece of cardstock that is 11
inches long by 4 and a quarter high and then I've scored it in the middle at 5
and a half inches I will add two patterned paper panels inside the card
each one five and a quarter by four and for the one on the left side of the card
I am using adhesive only along the left edge and this is because I am making a
window card and have decided I would like to actually add a pane of
transparency in between those layers to cover the window so that's the reason
I'm doing that now on the other panel I can just go ahead and put it in
permanently inside the card you do not have to make window cards
with this die but when you want to it's a great idea just to keep a little 1
inch strip of cardstock in with your die set (that's two and a half centimeters)
and what that is for is if you use your second largest square as the window
opening which is probably what you're normally going to be using for that then
you can use that 1 inch strip of cardstock right along the fold of the
card and then if you line up the edge of the die right up against that 1 inch
strip of cardstock that is the perfect location to be centered over the top of
the pop-up when it's closed so that's just a great little cheater that'll keep
you from having to do much measuring I've used temporary tape to hold my die
in place while I run that through my die cutting machine you can use any die
cutting machine that can accommodate a wafer-thin die I am using a Sizzix Big
Shot and I've decided to roll it through twice since I'm going through two layers
both the patterned paper and the card stock. A feature of that particular die
is that it has a decorative feature on the inside of the cut and the outside of
the cut so you'll get those little press dots around your window when you use
this one
so since I can still get between those two layers it will be easy now for me to
add a square of transparency in between those two layers to add a window pane
that's optional because the card works just fine whether or not that window is
open or whether it has a clear material but I wanted to suspend something on the
clear material later so that's why I decided to add one
this is the mechanism die for the Spinner Square is just a single piece
and I will cut that out of cardstock
so here's an idea for when you're first getting used to this die set go ahead
and mark with a pen or a pencil an X in all of the panels that will eventually
get adhesive okay let me point out where all those
X's should be your square is up here on the upper right and then you've got a
side panel on the right you've got two panels on the left and then this little
one inside here that outer panel should get an X and then right below the
perforation line there's a triangle-shaped panel and that should
also get an X ok let's start folding first I'm going to find these small fold
that connects the two pop-up boxes together and for that one it needs to be
folded as a valley so this upper section is going to become a pop-up box it has
three more score lines in it and all three should be folded as mountain folds
so that means you're folding away from yourself they are next to that big X tab
and then here at the bottom next to the small X tab from the side you can see
the box the other half of this piece also makes a box and it also needs
mountain folds so there's one right next to this X tab when that folds down those
two X tabs will end up right next to each other in the finished card then
there is a mountain fold for the other X tab and a mountain fold that's next to
the two triangle panels right here and from the side now you can see your
second box
now I want to locate and work the two diagonal folds and the easiest way to do
that is to fold the straight fold down and then put your thumbnail into that
diagonal fold and then fold the whole piece over on that diagonal fold that
will work both of the folds so that when you open it back up it's easy then to
collapse those two triangles to fold into the box and notice I'm just
ignoring my square wherever the square goes right now just leave it we're only
trying to make sure that we get those two triangles folded down into the box
okay remember that little X triangle that is where we're going to add some
adhesive now I am going to use my Fine Tip bottle filled with Lineco neutral
pH adhesive we sell both those items on our website but you could just use some
mini glue dots so it's whatever you want to use for a nice strong adhesive the
only important thing is that the adhesive only go in the little X
triangle
that I'm going to fold on that perforation line so that the square
comes over the top and notice it's split like that so that it's real easy for
just that one little triangle to be attached to the box so that little
square is what does the spinning in the mechanism so as the card is closed then
see the triangles will collapse and the square will spin out one way and then as
the card opens it'll spin the other way okay let's put this mechanism in the
card now our two X-panels they are not at the same location until you do that
little zigzag fold in the center and then now that brings them right next to
each other so that they have the same endpoint that's the position we want
when we glue this inside the card so we're going to place our mechanism on
the right side of the card so that those two X-panels are lined up right in the fold
of the card I've just centered it using my window as a guide and then I want
to carefully, making sure it doesn't slide, close the card against that
exposed adhesive which will attach those two X-panels now to the left side of the
fold
a quick check to make sure I can see the panel's that are next to the X tabs so I
should see X tab and the panel next to it if for example I could only see the X
panel then I just need to make sure that I fold on the next fold down so that I
can see two panels in the flat position before I add my glue now the glue is
going to go only on the X panels themselves we're basically repeating
what we did with the other two X panels so those are ready to go now and then I'm
just going to close the card against the exposed glue give it a good press and
that will attach those tabs to the correct position on the right side of
the card so since we have a window card you can see the flat position looks like
this how the square is and then as you open it that square is going to spin
you can attach anything to that square to make it spin but the die set does
include a rectangle that is sized perfectly to fit on the square so what
you would do is just add your adhesive to the square but you do have to make
sure that you only add it to the three sides of the square so these three like
you're making an L you don't get to put any adhesive down into the part that
collapses into the triangle so as long as you just keep your adhesive to those
three spots you're fine that I'm going to line up and put my rectangle on and
now you'll see that the rectangle will spin now the big square is going to
attach to our upper pop-up box so I just need some adhesive there and then I'll
just line up my biggest square that comes in the set although it again it
could be anything so you could swap out the square for anything that you want to
put up on that box I'm just showing you with the pieces that come in the set
since I chose to make mine a window card you can see how that big square lines up
perfectly with the window opening one thing I like to do for my window cards
is to make a window frame so for that I will just nest the two largest squares
together and cut them at the same time
and remember that second-largest square has decorations on both sides of the cut
line so it will give you a decoration both for your inner square and your
outer frame since I'm going for a tropical theme it
will just be perfect to use the palm tree edge from the Tropical Scene die to
create a set of little palm trees for the front of the card
next I'll add that window frame that I just cut right to the front of the card
around the opening
and then inside the card I'll add the decorator square to my pop-up square and
then I'll be able to see that through the opening there is a die in the
Spinner Square set that will cut two sides to a decorative frame so I had to
cut that twice and I did put double-sided adhesive tape on the back
of the cardstock before die-cutting so that all four of those pieces would
become stickers making it really easy to attach those to my transparency
there are so many great combinations with all the little squares and
decorator pieces that come in the set I took the scalloped square and cut out
one of the seashells that was just on the patterned paper and then I used the
die the smallest die in the set cuts four little photo corners at one time and
I'll just add those as a little decorator touch around one of my squares
okay that's probably enough squares for one card but I will say there are
actually two more sizes in the set that I didn't use the seashells for the front
of the card came from the Tropical Scene as well as the waves edge that I'm using
now I stacked up three cuts of waves and I'll we use those to change from sand to
ocean on my arm I decided that what I really wanted was a shark to come out of
there so I wanted him to be swimming in some waves
the shark is going to come from the Sea Animals set I've already assembled
him giving him his teeth in his eyes and then I went ahead and grabbed the other
two animals from the set and put those together as well so I have a crab and I
have a sea turtle the shark is on my spinner arm I put the crab on a piece of
sand in the left corner and then for the sea turtle I'll use a couple pop dots to
add him to my pop-up and that way if he's in this corner here you'll be able
to see him when the card is closed our word sets are a nice small size that
works so well with the pop-ups and I used Word Set 4 to add "just a note to
say" to the front of the card and then I added from Word Set 1 the word "hello"
into the speech bubble that comes with the Spinner Square set now because I
chose a relatively short card that shark is coming all the way up to the top of
the card in the closed position and I really don't have room to add that
speech bubble to him otherwise it would probably stick out of the card so
instead I'm going to add it to the background of the card itself and that
way he just pops out and then he's saying hello
since I chose a standard size card I'll be able to mail this in just an a2
envelope it won't require any extra postage it folds down nice and flat I
just love this die set it is so generic it will work for any theme and let me
show that to you by showing a few ideas by our very talented design team
Karen Aicken has the mermaid riding the shark on the little pop-out arm I just
love that idea the Spinner Square makes cute cards, the Spinner Square makes
artsy cards look at this beauty by Shelley Hickox in a masculine travel
theme Summer Hills-Painter is probably going
to have to make three of these cards because she has three boys but she used
all the new royalty dies with the Spinner Square
Kelly Booth combined the Spinner Square with some of our coffee themed dies and
this would be just such a great card to send a friend
Francis Byrne used some of her wonderful stamps on the Spinner Square for this
card and you can't go wrong with sparkle as Fran Sabad shows on this
wonderful mermaid card the Spinner Square pop-up starts shipping February
