A wish is not a fleeting gift to a child with a serious illness, but a powerful psychological intervention.
This is why we believe in the "wish journey" and not simply the wish moment.
The wish journey is the process in which Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with serious illnesses.
The Wish Journey consists of five steps, each stage building on the last to maximize the wish impact.
To help us illustrate the wish journey, we will follow the wish of Sam.
This is Sam.
Sam is 14.
He loves music and spending time with his family,
but Sam also has a brain tumor.
Sam and his family are about to embark on the most difficult time of their lives
as Sam begins treatment and fights his condition.
but he won't be fighting on his own.
Sam will have his deepest, most true wish granted by Make-A-Wish.
We will carefully design a whole wish journey to help build resilience in Sam.
Step 1: Wish Capture
To help capture his wish, Make-A-Wish sends Sam a Wish Box.
Sam puts all the things that are most important to him in that box.
Two members of the wish granting team come and visit Sam and his family.
He shows them the contents of his Wish Box and talks about what is in the box.
Sam loves guitars.
He started playing at seven, and considers his instructor, Richard, the coolest guy he knows.
Sam has two aspirations:
to play "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix
and to own a white 1970 Relic Fender Stratocaster.
It is now time to design Sam's wish.
Step 2: Wish Design
The wish granting team brainstorms on ways to grant Sam's wish.
When designing wishes, nothing is impossible!
They come up with great ideas, like Sam performing at a concert,
recording a CD, or receiving a custom guitar built just for him.
Family, friends, and his instructor, Richard are all important to Sam,
so they think of ways to get them involved in the wish.
Finally, they narrow down the ideas into Sam's one true wish.
Step 3: Wish Anticipation
Sam's wish is to be a rockstar at his very own concert.
To make that wish come true, a lot of work (and fun) comes first.
Anticipating his wish increases Sam's positive emotions
– which help promote resilience and improve his overall well-being.
First, Sam goes with his wish granters to a guitar shop
and sees Richard playing his dream guitar.
Richard invites Sam to play, and after playing a short song,
he tells Sam the guitar is his to keep!
He then tells Sam he has eight weeks of lessons
to master his favorite song, "All Along the Watchtower."
All these moments of anticipation will help provide a distraction
from the worries of his illness and the treatments he is receiving.
Unbeknownst to Sam, everyone plays a role in granting his wish.
His grandparents learn a special dance to perform during the songs,
and his best friend and siblings put together a list of concert guests.
And now, when everyone talks about Sam, they are talking about his wish - not his illness.
It is time for the big day.
Step 4: Wish Realization
On the day of his wish, Sam is feeling confident, strong and ready for his wish.
When they arrive at the concert venue,
Sam sees his dream guitar on stage connected to its matching amp.
He cannot believe his eyes.
Also on stage is Richard. He helps Sam with his performance.
Finally, it is time for "All Along the Watchtower."
Before his wish journey, Sam would never have had the confidence to play on stage
but today Sam plays the song like it was written just for him.
They shout for an encore!
Sam smiles from ear-to-ear. In that moment, he truly is a rock star!
Step 5: Wish Effect
This life-changing experience will stay with him forever.
His wish came true, and made him believe anything is possible
This is Sam
Sam is 14, and has a brain tumor
But now, thanks to the Wish Journey, Sam's imagination has been ignited.
His true wish has been granted. Sam is transformed.
His family and community will never forget this experience either;
they too have been transformed.
This is the true impact of a wish come true.
