Through storytelling, mechanics, and art

What's also wonderful about games is there's other game mechanics

that can be used to address these issues.

Whether it's a puzzle game or a first person shooter game

where you wouldn't necessarily imagine something as a mechanic to address an issue.

But if we're able to reverse engineer the storyline to actually use those kind of dynamics in a game

it can be quite powerful.

One game that hit the headlines recently is Hair Nah.

Created by the game designer Momo Pixel

you play as a black woman trying to stop white hands from touching your hair.

The game has a simple point to be made and so we wanted to gave to be super simple

Literally you're just pushing left and right arrows or clicking to swat the hands

Because I haven't seen a game where a black woman is the main character.

I really wanted this to be super vibrant and highlight the skin tones and the hairstyles.

I would say the colors and stuff drive the game, like any colors in a game.

I mean it keeps you interested, it keeps you engaged.

And this encourages more diverse people to develop games

You can now address and find games on your iPhone. You can find it on your laptop through Steam.

So it's kind of democratized the way games can be distributed

and that's invited a whole new industry of independent game designers to use this medium.

And when you get that you also get a lot of creative thought.

They are not just making games for mass entertainment.

They're making games for particular audiences.

44 per cent of our students are female so I think that's a very exciting statistic.

As you look at the video game industry. It is primarily male-dominated.

However having these young women learn how to make games

social impact games that marry issues about their society and what they face

is going to be tremendously important as we see these young girls grow up

to be women who are going to get into the gaming industry.

Being a black woman, you're always trying to find a character that looks closest to you

or if you can, customize it, try to do the most that you can.

When you have the opportunity to create your own, you want it to reflect who you are.

But not every response to this increased diversity has been positive.

In August 2014, #GamerGate was used to attack women associated with the game industry.

The sexist harassment stemmed from allegations of collusion between feminists and the media.

However this claim has remained unfounded.

There are a lot of different kinds of outcomes that games can have on the player that is using the game.

It could be for education to learn something.

But it also could be to change behavior. A game can be used for cognitive training.

At the very base level even the most entertaining games help develop skills

like critical thinking and problem solving.

And not just small studios are now producing impactful content.

In early 2017 the AAA game Uncharted featured two female leads, one of whom was black.

And the popular game Overwatch features characters of different sexual orientations and ethnicities.

This overall progressive trend for the industry is groundbreaking for game makers and players alike.

Any time you play a game, you learn regardless if that's the goal or not.

That's what games playing is.

As long as it's inventive and different and, you know, unique

it's a really effective tool and it's fun. Yeah I think they're dope.

BOSS Homebrew for Atari 2600 by Gemintronic Games - Duration: 4:06.

Back in late 2016 There was an Indiegogo campaign to raise money for a new homebrew Atari 2600

game being developed which goes by the title of "BOSS".

It raised $1210 with the help of 30 backers.

I purchased the collectors set which included a signed copy of the games manual and the

digital package.

There was a stretch goal to create Super Boss for PC had the amount of $1500 been reached.

Brought to us from the makers of Conjoined and "dead of knight".

Reading from the Indiegogo website:

BOSS is a single player shoot em up that is cut from a slightly different cloth.

You pilot your ship against one massively powerful boss ship at a time.

These enemies vary in size and behavior, and get stronger as you go.

The one constant is that they're tough!

It's a constant battle of attrition that tests your reflexes, patience, and planning.

Before you know it, these titans are filling the screen with their shots, and mixing up

their patterns.

It's the equivalent of a bullet-hell shmup on the classic Atari!

I don't think anybody expected to be blown away by this game, but what they did expect

was for it to be delivered on time.

I just received my copy of the game in late January 2018, when it was originally promised

the be delivered on December 15th, 2016.

I believe most of the backers having played other gemintronic games pretty much knew what

to expect from this homebrew.

I like the title screen and the Giant scrolling word "BOSS" which scrolls across the screen

from right to left in the beginning and in between levels.

The "ship" you are piloting looks nothing like a ship as depicted in the manual.

Instead it resembles a waddling penguin that can shoot bullets out of it's beak.

It also sort of resembles someone wearing a hoodie.

The "BOSS" that you fight against shoots down some kind of blocky lines which are not explained

and SLOWLY make their way down the screen, must be avoided, and eventually disappear.

Also there are random torpedoes which are shot down toward you and also must be actively

avoided.

These torpedoes unfortunately are slightly phallic in shape and color, and contain what

looks the like letters "HOR".

I don't think this was intentional and I might just be seeing what unintentionally looked

like letters as part of the missile.

I was unable to draw any connection to what those letters could represent.

Each time you fire and strike the "Boss" you are awarded 10 points to your score.

You have a red health meter on the bottom left portion of the screen.

Your health starts out strong then depletes, and from what I experienced, can never be

replenished.

The "Boss" also has a red health meter, bottom right.

When you destroy a "Boss" you are rewarded with the opportunity to destroy a new "Boss".

Wash, rinse, repeat.

That is Boss in a nutshell.

This game is about avoiding all objects on the screen at all times and trying to see

how long you can last until you run out of energy.

The games manual offers little in actually explaining any gameplay, instead preferring

to stick to the games lore.

From what I can tell there are no game variations and the difficulty switches are not used.

There is no explanation as to who the person displayed on the title screen is supposed

to represent.

Are you playing as him?

Who knows.

On a positive note the Box, Cartridge and Manual are all nicely done.

I like how the manual was printed to look like a manila folder.

The artwork is nice and grabs your attention.

There is some fun to be had playing "Boss".

Dodging all the objects on the screen can be quite challenging and might take a bit

of strategy to last a long time.

I would have liked for there to have been few more different types of screens or gameplay

variations thrown, in once and a while to mix it up.

and as we have seen so many debuts of PC games last year I think we should now talk about the

best sequels or the best game franchises of this decade

so there are a lot of

games from the racing category this year but there's nothing that even comes

closer to project Cars 2

the gameplay has been worked upon really very well

this time and also the racing feels very very fresh and I would recommend this

game for every serious racer present in the world

next game is Assassin's

Creed origins so this game doesn't feel as new as the old ones did but surely

this is a very valuable successor or an addition to the series

the gameplay is

very similar to what we saw in the Assassin's Creed 2

once again a big

thumbs up to Ubisoft for working upon the storyline and graphics of the games

so well

all that makes this game look very very realistic

the series has

received a lot of critical appreciation and that's what makes this to be a part

of this list

it was a really tough decision choosing between FIFA or PES

but surely I would

say after playing the FIFA 18 I would directly choose FIFA over PES

it shouldn't

be surprising if I say that a game like or a series like the FIFA

was a

series that left a lot of impact on the gamers of this decade and here comes the

most badass game of this year or even the year coming up

Wolfenstein 2 was a game

that was a fully complete package it was free of

any crucial bugs it was really really amazing

the gunplay was amazing

the

concept was amazing the

overall gameplay was very very satisfying

and I would

recommend this to any gamer and

for the hardcore gamers this one is a must have

on your list Wolfenstein series made up to this list

which is the big achievement in itself and even if not of this ticket but it

will be assured ly a very popular game for the next many years to come

well the next game is the game that scared the shit out of me

Resident Evil series have been very famous for their amazingly worked upon

concept and the same applies with this one though the graphics have not been

improved a lot but they still are a lot better than before the gunplay

or even the gameplay is very very satisfying

though I won't recommend it
