Loot Crate Update | On The Level: NG+ Gaming News - Duration: 5:10.

It's been about six months since the loot box issue popped up in the gaming scene.

Last we checked in, Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Middle-earth: Shadow of War were facing

heavy criticism for their loot box implementation, and this had gotten the attention of

lawmakers around the world.

So what's the current fate of loot crates?

Let's navigate the state of play and separate the sinners and saints in this

the Loot Crate Update.

Brought to you by Colgate: Now with added nitrate so now you can better masticate grapes

with a date or eight mates.

Let's start with Star Wars Battlefront 2, the poster child of this entire situation.

Remember when the day before launch developers DICE suspended the in-game microtransactions?

Well if you don't...they did that.

Anyway, in March DICE announced that it was revamping the game's progression, which

would remove gameplay-altering items from loot crates, replacing them with cosmetic

items and in-game credits to purchase them.

It's basically what people were asking for leading up to the launch: The removal of pay-to-win

and the ability to play as a hot-pink Stormtrooper.

Having said that it feels too little too late for this game.

Sure it sold 9 million copies, but I reckon at least half of these are currently sitting

in pre-owned bins at your local game retailer.

And generally, people aren't talking about this ostensibly ongoing game

outside of loot box memes on reddit, and satirical news monologues on community television

and YouTube.com/NewGamePlusTV like comment and subscribe!

The other loot box culprit, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, has gone one step further and

removed microtransactions all together.

In a candid post, developer Monolith admitted that the ability to purchase in-game Orcs

"risked undermining the heart of our game, the Nemesis System"

and that it "compromises those same stories even if you don't buy anything."

Fair play to Monolith; they were open about the problem and the incoming solution.

Now all we need is a similar apology from Peter Jackson for stretching

The Hobbit into three movies.

It seems these games made changes at the right time

because lawmakers around the world are starting to step in.

Which brings us to Belgium, home of waffles and many Belgians keen to remind us

that Belgium is more than just waffles.

They really waffle on about that point.

Belgium was one of the earliest European countries to publicly announce a review into the potential

link between loot boxes and gambling.

And in April, the nation's Gaming Commission identified three games that fell under the

it's gambling laws: Overwatch, Counter Strike: Global Offensive and FIFA 18.

I, for one, am shocked to hear soccer associated with illicit gambling.

This has never ever happened in the history of the sport. Ever.

The loot boxes in these titles were determined to be, under gambling law, games of chance

that drew players in with an "emotional profit forecast"

which by the way is a really good name for corporate punk band.

The Commission was also concerned that these games appeared to target minors.

These three games must now either remove or alter their loot boxes, otherwise they may

be dealt with under Belgian criminal law.

This could mean five years imprisonment and a fine of 800,000 euros.

That kind of money could buy you so many waffles.

So expect a very exciting E3 press conference from EA where it will announce it will replace

FIFA Ultimate Team with a brand new and exciting mode: FIFA Battle Royale.

100 soccer players are placed onto a pitch, the last one to take an intentional dive wins.

Average game length: 12 seconds.

Over in America, Hawaii is writing a bill to regulate loot boxes,

and lawmakers in Washington state are also looking into whether loot boxes fall under its gambling laws.

The gaming industry does not want the government to step in, and so the industry-run

Entertainment Software Ratings Board has intervened...by slapping labels onto any games that have

in-game purchases, including loot boxes.

In 2018, that is literally every video game. It's as effective as labelling

a packet of cigarettes with the words "Warning: Contains cigarettes"

or every Drake album with "Warning: Contains sadness."

Mind you, the ESRB still holds the view that loot boxes do not constitute gambling.

In a letter to a US Senator, the ESRB believed that loot boxes were analogous to baseball

cards and that they "provide a player a fun way to acquire virtual items

for use within the game."

Loot boxes are fun, aren't they?

I mean, just look at Kripparian as he is opening up 1000 Hearthstone packs.

Isn't he having the time of his life?!

Games That Were Recalled And Destroyed - Duration: 5:43.

When a company puts a video game into the world, their hope is always that it will be

a huge success.

But sometimes, things take an unexpected turn, and the game you thought would be a smash

hit ends up crashing and burning.

Often, this means letting your failed project quietly wither away in a Best Buy bargain

bin — but other times, it means promptly pulling every copy from store shelves, destroying

them, and pretending they never existed.

Let's take a look at some of the most controversial games that were recalled and relocated, to

the nearest dump.

To err is human

Silicon Knights was an independent Canada-based studio with a few hits to their name.

Hoping for a David and Goliath moment in 2007, they decided to take a swipe at big-name studio

Epic Games, the company behind Gears of War, but that didn't exactly go according to plan.

Silicon Knights sued Epic over disagreements about the engine, claiming that Epic had sabotaged

"efforts by Silicon Knights and others to develop their own video games" using Unreal

Engine 3.

Unfortunately for Silicon Knights, Epic countersued in 2012, and a judge in North Carolina ruled

in Epic's favor, saying that Silicon Knights

"... repeatedly and deliberately copied significant portions of Epic Games's code containing trade

secrets […] and used it to create a competing product, Silicon Knights's own game engine."

This meant that Silicon Knights had to recall and destroy every single unsold copy of the

already controversial, and barely playable, action RPG Too Human.

With this ruling, the universally panned title was all but wiped off the face of the Earth.

Good riddance.

"I think Too Human is one of the biggest, most misunderstood games in the industry."

Well, that's one way of putting it.

Destined to be forgotten

Silicon Knights' trouble didn't end with Too Human's recall.

Their next title, X-Men: Destiny, suffered a similar fate.

While the title had an interesting premise that had players stepping into the shoes of

a new mutant aligned with either Professor X or Magneto, it ultimately received underwhelming

reviews from critics.

Of course, after that pesky court ruling, the mediocre quality of the game no longer

mattered.

X-Men: Destiny was also recalled.

The damage done to Silicon Knights went beyond losing these two games.

They were also forced to destroy the code for three games they'd already announced,

and pay $9.2 million to the company.

Unsurprisingly, Silicon Knights filed for bankruptcy in 2014.

LitteBigOopsie

Full of cute and cuddly characters and creative gameplay, LittleBigPlanet is beloved by players

of all ages.

And if its Metascore of 95 is any indication, critics loved the quirky title too!

So what went wrong?

Well, before it became a runaway success, Sony ran into a little-big-problem thanks

to, surprise, its background music.

If you're scratching your head in confusion, you're not alone.

Here's the gist: Eurogamer reports that Sony delayed LittleBigPlanet's release because

they found "two references to the Qu'ran" in one of its background songs.

The song in question was recorded by Toumani Diabate, himself a Muslim, but the folks at

Sony worried about offending members of the Muslim faith by having words from their holy

book in their silly little video game.

In addition to delaying the game's release, every copy of the game that had been delivered

to retailers worldwide was recalled and replaced.

A majestic mistake

In school, they try and drill it into your head that plagiarism is wrong.

You aren't supposed to steal other people's work, and if you get caught, there will be

hell to pay.

Well, the guys behind Limbo of the Lost must've been playing hooky that day, because that's

exactly what landed their game in hot water.

Before it became famous for its plagiarism, Limbo of the Lost was just a small-time, little-known

point-and-click adventure.

The game was made by developer Majestic Studios, which was really just three friends from England

— friends who apparently were big fans of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Thief:

Deadly Shadows.

As IGN reported, the game stole not just level design from those titles, but background details

as well.

Tri Synergy, who released the game, claimed ignorance of what the developers had done,

and called for an end to all sales.

It pulled the game from stores and proceeded to put the kibosh on Majestic Studio's first

and only title.

The developers would later go on to deny that they'd had any hand in the plagiarism.

Instead, they blamed "outsourced talent" for the oversight.

Arcade aches

Casual video game play doesn't usually cause injuries.

Sure, maybe you could end up with a sore wrist or fingers, and virtual reality can make you

feel sick, but casual gamers typically come away from their favorite titles unscathed.

That wasn't the case with the 1990 arcade version of Sonic Blast Man.

At its core, Sonic Blast Man was about punching people.

And in the arcade version, they let you do the punching, using a punching bag that you

would strike as hard as you could to clear each level.

You can probably see where this is going.

As retro games blogger VGJUNK notes in his write-up of the wildly different sequel, some

game players got a little overzealous with their punches.

The game was recalled in the United States because people were hurting themselves.

Thus, the machines were promptly pulled from arcades everywhere, and gamers were forced

to take out their pent-up frustration in healthier ways.

My honest opinion on this game would be it's pretty good. The controls are a little finicky

I will admit they are just kind of like I don't know

I feel like maybe the arrow keys would be better than using a mouse cuz it's honestly really difficult using the mouse

Among The Sleep Review (Spoilers) - Weekend Game Guy - Duration: 14:23.

Immersive horror games have really taken off in the last few years

You know the type of game I'm talking about you're dropped into a first-person perspective

basically weaponless and defenseless and your only chance of survival is to

Run and hide from whatever terror is chasing you down. Some notable releases have been the Slender games

Outlast and of course the most notable in my opinion Alien: Isolation

This type of game is pretty much exactly what I was expecting when I started playing among the sleep

I did not expect to find myself in the midst of such an emotional experience

I don't want to jump too far off into the heavy stuff right away

So let's start with some of the boring stuff. You're going to play as our hero of the story a baby

The baby is never really given a name and in the cutscenes the baby is simply referred to as baby

So, it's clear that you're a baby

consequently the controls and mechanics

reflect such movements follow a standard

WASD setup, however

As a baby there is some mechanics that I felt really fit in particular

crawling versus walking crawling is a much faster way to move around and if you've ever had to care for a toddler for more than

A minute you'll know that

This hits the nail on the head a walking toddler is wobbly and slow but a crawling toddler can vanish in a second

You can climb using the spacebar and believe me a toddler is much more agile than you might expect throughout the game

You're going to carry a teddy bear named Teddy, of course

He tells you that if you find that you're really scared. You can hug him by pressing F essentially

Teddy seems to act more as a flashlight than anything else Teddy honestly never seemed to help fend off the monsters

Finally the mouse is used to interact with your environment

You'll pick up objects using the left mouse button. And if you so desire you can throw them using the right mouse button

I'll say this when it comes to matters of interaction on the sleep seems to capture what it is to be a baby

There were moments when trying to move items that seemed really difficult. Like there was actually some resistance

one of the best examples I believe that I can cite is there's this moment when you're in a

Playground level and you've got to open a toy chest

But you've really got a push and you keep pushing and you keep pushing

until you can finally open it up to get to what's inside and this honestly made me think of my own kids is whenever

they were toddlers and they were trying to open their toy chests to get ones inside watching them struggle and fight to do stuff like

That sometimes and honestly

it felt like a little victory when I finally opened the chest all that to say that the game does a great job of

Conveying what it is mechanically to be a toddler

The game opens on your second birthday mommy is putting the finishing touches on your birthday cake

She sits tells you happy birthday exclaims how cute you are and how much she loves you then

She feeds you some of the cake in full choo-choo train mode naturally and a knock comes to the door

It's interesting to see how the developers have chosen to convey. The child's perspective and

Interpretation the shaky vision and the distorted sound of what is clearly arguing at first

I just passed off the shaky vision as an aesthetic choice

But when I gave it more thought I honestly think that this was meant to be tears welling up in the baby's eyes

Which makes sense of two-year-old over hearing an argument would naturally feel fear and probably react by crying

Mom returns to the table with a principal but it is not revealed who she is arguing with

However, I'm sure you'll make a logical guess just as I did

Mom decides she's going to carry you and your present up to your room

She gives you a loving kiss picks you up and we're all headed upstairs once in the room the phone rings

So mom place you in the playpen and heads off to answer the call you of course do your best Tommy pickles?

Impersonation and busts out of the playpen. This is when you meet Teddy

Teddy runs you through what is essentially a tutorial go check out the music box by your crib which ends up being

Kind of important soon. Teddy will decide that the two of you need in the closet at this point

I was honestly creeped out by Teddy and I felt like he would somehow end up being your enemy

You'll discover that she is gone

Where is she does the monster have her?

It is likely that you will explore the closet in her room at this point and you'll find one of your first clues as to

What may be going on as you'll leave the room you'll catch your first glimpse of the monster. It happens really fast

You'll eventually hear your mother humming a tune and honestly

There was something slightly unnerving about it. If you followed the sound you will discover a ghostly apparition of your mother

Another ghostly figure so the goal is usually to find your way to the memory so that you can move on to the next stage

Basically, you find the item linked to the memory bring it back to the Playhouse and use it as a key to hook the door

Think at this point, it bears mentioning that this game deals with some pretty heavy issues most notably

divorce

Alcoholism abuse and even neglect when the game began and the visitor showed up at the door

I made an assumption an assumption that was later proven to be

slightly inaccurate and

honestly that assumption was further solidified when I crawled into the closet and found the portrait of what I assumed to be

my mother and father

But there were hints

Hints that I was obviously too thick to pick up on at first

Crawling through the kitchen when I was searching for my mother

There were bottles in all the cabinets and I of course jumped to the conclusion to pay. This is an indie title

They're just using these bottles as filler but I was wrong and I firmly believed that the producers of this game were sending

Message these hints continue to drop in the puzzle level if you pay attention to the portraits as you make your way down the hallways

You get a strong indication of what or who the monster really is

This was at least for me when I finally got it in the final act of the game. The truth is clear as crystal

It's a pair that your parents are splitting up and it looks like a big reason for that is that your mother is abusing alcohol

furthermore the stress of the break-up is causing her to abuse it more and more and

She may have even been guilty of lashing out at you

Physically the game ends on a hopeful

But still sad note dad shows up and it looks like you're going to stay with him

But it's sad because it seems like mom may continue to struggle

At least that's what I thought until I played the prologue

If you play through the prologue

You'll see that it appears that there was a lot of turmoil in home

And neither of your parents was handling things very well at all

My six-year-old happened to be in the room during the final moments of the game

It was incredibly confused as to why a mommy would push her baby. He and I ended up having a very heavy and

emotional

conversation

Among the sleep does a solid job of showing alcoholism and abuse through the eyes of a child

Though a child's imagination may alter their perception of such events

The way a child might draw pictures depicting things he or she has experienced

And of course the way a teddy bear can become your hero

All of these were conveyed in a manner that is completely believable to me. I also really appreciate that

this game took my expectations of what a game of this type would be and turned it completely on its head as

350 in total so the point is is that at the end of the day this whole event is

going to cost you the 1120 diamonds to complete the entire suit you can think

about whether this is worth it or not just simply because when we complete the

other Mirage set using all the free tries to complete one outfit would be

seven hundred and something diamonds before this one you need one thousand

one hundred and twenty diamonds if you think that this outfit is worth it then

maybe think about whether you want to just completely go for this outfit

instead of that one so I came to a conclusion that I'm going to actually go

what I can see this is just a big maze. Now I went back and I looked at the

numbers that we saw earlier and I think those are the key to getting out of here.

I think we need to find either the number or the combination of those

numbers, cause if you see there's some of these cubbyholes they don't have

numbers and they're kind of passageways through the maze. And then there's other

holes, cubbyholes right here with numbers and

those are not the numbers that we're looking for, at least not that I can see.

So let's uh run around the maze here and see if we can find our magic set of

numbers and hopefully our door out of here!

What makes this one so hard too is that every few minutes you get reset to a random position somewhere within the

maze, so that really throws you off and then I'm like okay where I am... because

you have to basically go back and figure out if you've been here before if you've

not have been here before, so it's just a lot of running around.
