When I originally moved into my car, like I didn't do it to like travel, or to
embrace minimalism, or to live small or like- no, none of that. That all was like a
successful by-product and I'm very happy with how things turned out, but the
decision to actually switch from traditional style living into some sort
of vehicle was purely based on this idea of saving money and saving a lot of it
and saving it quickly. And it was also supposed to be a temporary solution, like
at- when I decided to do it, and even into the first like six months of me doing it,
was never supposed to be a long-term thing. And so usually that's the point at
like when I share that information where people are like well "why didn't you just
get a cheaper apartment you know lower your rent?" or "why didn't you move in with
your parents?" and yeah, I get those questions a lot.
"Why I don't rent an apartment?" so I definitely feel like I have to preface this saying like I
don't think there's anything wrong with renting an apartment, I don't judge
anyone who rents an apartment, I think that if you rent an apartment and you
like it- it suits your lifestyle and you're happy then I'm happy for you like
literally I do not care if other people rent apartments. The way I see it, in order
to make money you have to work right? So in order to work what you're doing is
essentially your trading minutes, days, years of your life to work to get money
and then when you get this money what are you doing with it?
You're, it's what it feels like to me, is it feels like I'm just giving it away
because I'm not investing in anything. Then it's like a catch-22 because of the
fact that I'm working so much to pay for this place then I'm never even at this
place because I'm always at work working to pay for it... But anyways the simplest
answer is like just me personally, like I can't. I just don't believe in that. And
that's like a I mean you typically you hear like "oh, Santa Claus... I don't believe
in that." or you know something like that, but like "paying rent, I don't believe in
that." it's a little bit different, but that's just how I feel and it really is
just like one of those things I feel it like with such conviction
that I feel like it's- like it's almost wrong. Like it's- it's not fair and it
makes me so angry when when I had to do it because I did do it. I did, I rented a
room in a house, I rented a room in an apartment, like you know, I've done my
fair share of paying rent. And it was- it was never the price that was the problem
because I had more expensive rent, I had cheaper rent, it was always just like in
my head what it was is like based on principle. I just felt like it was- I just
didn't like it. It was not fair I don't know how else to say it and I know that sounds
maybe a bit entitled or privileged because of the fact that like I could
afford to pay rent for a room or whatever, but at the same time it's like
all problems are relative and it wasn't like I was flourishing in that type of
environment you know what I'm saying like I was definitely more on the end of
living paycheck to paycheck and really struggling. And I think, you know, if
that hadn't been the case ... like if I had just been so rich that money was not a
thing to me then maybe I wouldn't feel that way because I wouldn't value a
dollar to the same degree that I do now you know, it's like there's all this like
speculation like "what if this? what if that?" like my views might be different
but the point is like these are my views now and this is what they've
developed into. So again, like I don't mean to offend anyone or talk bad about
anyone who thinks that renting, whether it be a house or a room or an apartment,
whatever- like as long as it works for you and you're satisfied with it like
more power to you you know that's why I feel pretty much about everything but
it's just like the reason that I don't do it is because I feel so strongly
against it that like it literally like if I'm- while I'm doing it it feels like
it is eating away at my soul like it makes me miserable and I feel like that
sounds so dramatic and and maybe it is, but it's how I feel. It was to the point
where I was like "I refuse to do this anymore or ever again" like I
I can't. I will go insane if this continues to happen like it just can't.
there is no "if" because it can't because I cannot live like this. It was just it-
like that's what I mean when I say it ate away my soul like I am not joking it
made me a crazy person and so then the alternative to move into a car didn't
seem so crazy because I was already friggin crazy by paying rent and about
how strongly I felt about like not doing it. And here's the thing, like on top of
that, it's not just like- I never want to be the type of person that's like "oh I
don't like that..." dot dot dot. You know what I'm saying? It's like no, "I don't like that so...
how can I work my way around it? or how can I fix it? or how can I change it? how
can I just like-" I know what I want or what I don't want for that matter and
there's got to be a way to compromise there's got to be a way to work
something out because you have to be happy I mean that's that's life you know
you're gonna have a really bad time if you're never happy and there's certain
things that have paved my path simply because of the fact like I feel so
strongly about something, whether I like it or dislike it, that I have like
altered my life actually or made decisions based on that to get me to
where I am. And like I said, I know that "oh I don't believe in paying rent" it's
kind of- I mean it's- and it's not like I just don't believe in society and I'm some
hooligan you know, nah nah like you know I believe in paying taxes I believe in
being part of a community- I'm just going off on a tangent so I guess let me just
answer what is the other one? what did I say I was gonna talked about? uhhhh...
ok, I remember: "why I don't live with my parents". There- there are definitely some
people where... okay you go to high school, you're living with your parents, you
graduate, you decide you're gonna go to college maybe move away from home so you
move away from home. What happens to your old room? Maybe your parents leave it
the same, maybe they just put like office stuff or storage stuff in there, but you
still have a room. You know, they still got their house, still got a room, you're
off at college if you ever decide you want to come back or you need to I don't
know... get your life together and you just need somewhere to like not pay rent for
a while and just regroup like you can go back home and even though there's a
bunch of stuff in your room now and it might be really annoying like you still have
that. And you know there's a good portion of people where that is their reality
and that is the reality of all of their friends and everyone that they grew up
with. However there is another reality where you know
not everyone has that luxury. And I love my family so much and we have a great
relationship, but in my case like I don't want to go into like super you know
details because that's like my parents business my family's business you feel?
but I just think- it- again as much as I think the "why don't you rent an
apartment?" or whatever is a fair question I almost think like "why don't you live
with your parents?" is kind of an unfair question because it's like well... I
honestly think that back in the end of 2013 beginning of 2014 when I decided to
first move into a car, I think that had I had the option to just go back home to
my old room and take a break and relax and regroup whatever, that's probably
what I would have done. Like honestly you know, but that that just didn't exist for
me. And I'm not mad about it I'm not bitter about it it was just the reality
of the situation and like that's cool so that's not gonna be the solution to my
problem find another solution and my solution was to move into a car.
