Here's What 30 Minutes of Nature Walking Daily Does for You.

Increases Attention and Decision Making Skills.

Even mild exertion from something like taking a brief walk improves your mental functioning

because of the increased oxygen created by the heart.

Walking on a regular basis also promotes connections between brain cells (neuroplasticity), lowers

the usual withering of brain tissue as we age, increases the volume of the hippocampus

(a brain region crucial for memory), and elevates levels of molecules that both stimulate the

growth of new neurons and transmit messages between them.

If You Walk Barefoot, You Can Ground Yourself.

Earthing or grounding refers to the practice of reversing the positive electrons which

build up in our bodies due to exposure to WiFi, bad diets, etc. positive electrons form

free radicals which cause our cells to die faster.

When we ground with the earth allowing the soles of our feet or any other body part to

touch bare ground, it balances out this positive charge with a negative, grounding charge that

greatly boosts our health.

You'll be 50% More Creative.

You'll Soak Up More Vitamin D. If we spend more time outdoors, we are more

likely to get the levels of Vitamin D we need for cell growth, bone strength, the reduction

of inflammation, and staving off depression.

Age More Gracefully.

Researchers found in a twelve-year study that people who spent time outside had lower age-related

complaints that those who spent most of their days indoors.

Be More Inspired to Work Out.

Even if you are a gym rat, spending time outside promotes your desire to go back to the gym.

Being surrounded in natural beauty makes exercise feel easier, so we are more likely to want

to tackle a boring 45-minute treadmill session at the gym when there's inclement weather.

Boosts Memory.

Moderate exercise like walking practiced daily over a period of six months has been shown

to change certain areas of the brain, making your memory sharper and clearer than before

you started the practice.

Improves Sleep.

Got sleep problems?

A 20-minute walk can increase serotonin and other hormones which help to regulate sleep

cycles and help you fall asleep and stay asleep at night.

Improves Mobility in People with Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's causes the brain to deteriorate making even simple motor skills like placing

one foot in front of the other difficult.

Walking, however, helps people suffering from Parkinson's much more mobile.

Cuts Your Risk of Alzheimer's in Half.

Gardening or dancing will do the trick too, but taking daily walks will cut your risk

of Alzheimer's in half.

Boosts Your Immune System.

A study found that walking just 20 minutes a day can cut your chances of catching a cold

or flu during "sick" season by 43%.

If you do get sick, it will cut the length and severity of your illness considerably.

Reduces the Incidence of Colon Cancer by 40%.

Walking a mile a day, something that can easily be done at a moderate pace in about 30-40

minutes can cut your chances of getting colorectal cancer in half.

This is likely because walking also stimulates digestion.

Studies have shown that walking right after a meal speeds the rate at which the food moves

through the colon, and can clear the glucose from your bloodstream to lower your blood

sugar as well.

Walking post-meal can also reduce bloating and that uncomfortable feeling of having stuffed

yourself too full.

Keeps Your Weight Healthy.

Adding just 30 minutes of brisk walking a day can burn up to 150 extra calories.

This can help you to lose weight if you are trying to, and helps to maintain a healthy

weight if you are already your ideal weight.

That's not the real secret to walking for a healthy weight though.

Many people are unaware that walking counteracts the effects of weight-promoting genes.

It also curbs sweet cravings in as little a 15 minutes, so you are less likely to eat

those high-calorie "treats" if you just go for a walk.

Reduces the Tendency to Dwell on Negative Aspects of Life.

If you want to think positively, and do it with ease, taking a walk through any green

space will do the trick.

Researchers proved this to be true in a study conducted by Gregory Bratman and his colleagues.

They were trying to figure out the effects of urbanization on people's moods since

more than 70% of the world is expected to live in a large city by the end of 2050.

The researchers found that spending as little as twenty minutes a day walking in a green

space could lower the tendency to ruminate of negative things.

Walking with someone we love can also allow us time to build our personal relationships

while getting al the benefits of a clear-mind and open heart that come with being in nature

and getting moderate exercise.

Increases Feelings of Well-Being and Inspiration.

The poet Walt Whitman (author of Leaves of Grass) spent many of his hours walking in

nature.

He said, "I believe the leaf of grass is no less the journey-work of the stars."

He also advised, "Keep your face toward the sunshine, and shadows will fall behind

you."

He talked highly of nature, saying that it could lead us to our own personal salvation.

He was constantly inspired by nature, and you can be too.

Reduces Back Pain.

Walking releases endorphins which are our body's own natural painkillers.

It also keeps our body more functional so that we experience less low back pain, which

is often due to prolonged sitting, or a sedentary lifestyle.

Alleviates Depression.

An Australian study found that regular walking alone can reduce depression, and doing in

nature ups the ante even more.

Stanford scientists also think they may have unraveled the reason that spending time in

nature lowers our feelings of depression and anxiety – they think it stops people from

thinking about stuff that makes them depressed.

Seeing the colors of nature – blues, greens, etc. are also known to change our brain waves

to those which create feelings of happiness and well-being.

If that wasn't enough to convince you to walk, researchers also believe walking in

nature relieves general mental fatigue, and elicits feelings of awe.

Increases Joint Health.

Walking can help restore joint health.

When we walk, nutrient dense blood is circulated into the cartilage which acts like a sponge

to soak it up.

This can help to prevent joint injuries, and to lessen joint pain.

It helps to rebuild the joint on a microscopic level.

Works Your Arms, Core, and Shoulder Muscles, Not Just Legs.

We all know that walking works our legs, glutes, ankles, and feet, but were you aware that

you also use your core to support an upright position, your shoulder muscles, and your

arms?

Maintaining a good walking posture can be a full-body workout.

Alleviates Risk of Cardiovascular Disease by 60%.

Exercise of any kind lowers your risk of heart disease by 60%.

Walking just happens to be one of the easiest types of exercise to do every day.

Reduces Fatigue.

If you are exhausted you may not want to go for a walk, but research suggests that, aside

from getting more sleep, you can reduce your fatigue by 65% just by ding exactly that.

As Dr. Tim Puetz, a researcher who led one study suggests, "Too often we believe that

a quick workout will leave us worn out — especially when we are already feeling fatigued, However,

we have shown that regular exercise can actually go a long way in increasing feelings of energy

— particularly in sedentary individuals."

You Can Commune with the Divine.

There's a reason why the Daoists revered nature and many a hermit or sadhu has spent

time in a forest or mountain cave meditating.

The quiet offered by nature is a way for us to get closer to our truest, divine nature,

and we don't have to be a monk to do it.

Walking meditation is also highly recommended.

Will Kate Middleton Take Over for Queen Elizabeth? Here's Everything We Know - Duration: 2:05.

Kate Middleton would be the perfect person to take over for Queen Elizabeth!

Since the Duchess of Cambridge married her husband, Prince William, back in 2011, royal

fans have been wondering when the beauty will serve the monarchy as Queen Consort of England.

Kate has already begun preparing to one day fill the coveted position.

For starters, when her son, Prince George, starts school this fall, the royal family

will move into Kensington Palace.

"In London, Kate will be able to get to official business more easily than when she was living

at Anmer Hall in Norfolk, an insider explained to Closer Weekly.

She has always made it clear that family comes first, but now her diary will also be

full of official events. Additionally, Queen Elizabeth has been giving her more public

speaking lessons to prepare for her future role.

Queen Elizabeth, 90 who recently got over a bad cold is "reluctantly slowing down,

Paul Burrell, Princess Dianas former butler, told Closer.

That means she isn't quite ready to pass down the crown.

That said, there is no exact time frame for when Kate will be named Queen Consort, but

it will be when her husband, William, 34, becomes king.

Since William is the royal party, Kate's title would be Queen Consort of England when her

hubby one day becomes King.

Technically, Elizabeth's son and William's father, Prince Charles, is next in line to

be king.

That would make his wife, Camilla, Queen Consort.

However, if the Queen doesn't think Charles is a fit, or if he denies the position, William

will then be named king, and Kate would be named Queen Consort.

CBD Works Differently Than THC, Here's How - Duration: 4:21.

Cannabis is such a chemically complex and controversial little plant.

It has all sorts of social and historical connotations that basically revolve around

getting high.

But marijuana doesn't have to get you high.

There is a compound in weed that has documented benefits for medical patients, without the

stoned feeling -- CBD.

While THC is the popular compound in the marijuana plant, cannabidiol or CBD is THC's non-hallucinogenic

buddy.

The yin and the yang.

The high people get from weed is caused by a specific and well-known compound in the

plant called Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC.

It's brother CBD doesn't possess any of the mind-altering, mood-changing properties

that THC does, and thus get's a lot less attention.

Many recreational users want the high, but people who have cancer don't.

Many people want to get the benefits of of medical marijuana, but also want to be able

to go about their day and not be locked on the couch.

To understand these CBD-specific benefits, we have to understand how cannabis (in general)

works in the brain.

A marijuana plant contains over 60 different chemical compounds called cannabinoids that

act on the body's endocannabinoid system.

This system modulates all sorts of mind-body functions.

For example, if you're in pain it keeps your body from going haywire -- this is called

downregulation.

It downregulates stress-related signals that lead to inflammation and pain.

It also works in your immune system and elsewhere in the body.

There are two main receptors that these cannabinoids bind to, conveniently named CB1 and CB2.

When a cannabinoid like THC hits the body, it acts on the CB 1 receptor, and affects

memory, concentration and coordination.

It gets you high.

When a cannabinoid like CBD hits the body, it doesn't act on CB-receptors, but hits

other, pain receptors that affect pain perception, anxiety, inflammation and so on... thus, it

doesn't get you high.

THC and CBD both have similar chemical makeups but different structures, which is why scientists

suspect they act differently in the brain.

So, of all these promising applications, CBD is most famous for its potential to treat

pediatric epilepsy -- or more importantly the seizures that are inherent to children

with epilepsy.

To put it simply, a seizure happens when the brain's electricity spikes and the brain's

circuitry freezes.

One parent described their son's seizures like "an overtaxed electrical grid."

Researchers haven't fully identified the mechanisms underlying CBD's capabilities to reduce these

seizures, but scientists think CBD may improve the function of the endocannabinoid system,

somehow.

Then it can regulate the central nervous system and protect against convulsive activity.

Evidence of CBD's benefits for pediatric epilepsy have been largely anecdotal, until

now.

A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that children with

a complex form of epilepsy who took CBD saw a 23 percent greater reduction in convulsive

seizures than those taking a placebo.Researchers used a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial;

the gold-standard for trials.

It's a big deal for the future of CBD-as-medicine.

There's a lot we still need to figure out about CBD, but more research is hard to do.

At the end of 2016, CBD was declared a Schedule I drug, in part, because THC and CBD are both

in the same plant.

The DEA says it's easier to keep track of CBD if it's regulated in this way, but after

recent studies we're starting to see medicinal benefits of CBD.

And Schedule I-ing a drug stymies research because scientists have to go through an incredible

amount of bureaucratic hoop jumping to get access to it.

At this point, scientists still have to prove that it's safe and well tolerated, with

a set dosage and a known list of side effects.

Hopefully, the scientific process will continue to run its course, even within the limitations.

Here's When JAY-Z's '4:44' Will Be Available on Spotify & Apple Music - Duration: 1:49.

What's up guys?!

Beija here for Complex!

Jay-Z's thirteenth studio album 4:44 is out, but unfortunately a lot of people won't

be able to indulge in the work because it's a Tidal exclusive.

If you are one of those people that are waiting until the 10-track project is available on

other streaming services like Spotify and Apple music…you might be in luck.

According to a report from Variety, Jay-Z fans that were too stubborn to drop a little

extra bread to hear the Magna Carta Holy Grail follow-up could potentially end up getting

rewarded for their patience.

Thursday night, a "source" said that 4:44 would drop on Apple Music after a week of

exclusivity on Tidal.

A different source had even better news claiming that the project would be available on "all

major services" in a week.

Now…a week is either going to wear your patience thin OR that may just be a ridiculously

short amount of time until you can experience Hov's new work.

Let's keep our fingers crossed though because when Beyoncé's Lemonade dropped last April

on Tidal people thought the exclusivity wouldn't last long…but it did.

Till this day Lemonade is still not available for streaming anywhere but Tidal.

In regards to sales and downloads, Billboard noted that Lemonade performed on par with

other great albums like Drake's Views for example.

However, the exclusivity of Tidal is apparent when you peep the streaming data.

Views did more than 2 million in streaming equivalent album units that year, while Lemonade

did only 214,000.

Kanye West's The Life of Pablo originally dropped as a Tidal exclusive and it recently

became the first streaming-only album to achieve platinum status.

Yeezy initially swore that his project would exclusively remain on Tidal, but months later

it became widely available on streaming services.

Hov has not officially announced any intentions of bringing 4:44 to other streaming services,

but keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best.

That's all the news for now, but for more Jay-Z updates be sure to subscribe to Complex

on Youtube today.

My daughter escaped being a scary health statistic. Here's what I learned. - Duration: 3:16.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Finally tonight: Often lost in the health care debate are the individual

stories of fear and uncertainty that come with a medical diagnosis.

Elizabeth Silver is an author and attorney who was unexpectedly plunged into a world

of statistics and probability.

She offers her Humble Opinion on how to consider a prognosis.

ELIZABETH SILVER, Author, "The Tincture of Time": When my daughter was six weeks old,

she suffered a serious stroke and spent two weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit.

As new parents, my husband and I spent that time beside her, waiting for answers and,

at the end, were given very few.

At home, with a single click, we could watch videos, read articles, and, most importantly,

stumble across numbers that would send us either rejoicing or panicking.

Like many parents, we had nothing to hold onto but statistics.

According to one I read, her stroke carried a 20 percent chance of death and 90 percent

chance of severe neurological damage.

I focused on the 90 percent, and imagined very different versions of our lives.

Over the next year, as we weaved in and out of doctors' offices, I recalled the aphorism

that physicians are supposed to treat the patient, not the paper.

Hippocrates, the ancient Greek philosopher and physician, said that it is more important

to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person

has.

In other words, we must remember that patients are people with stories.

I took a step back and began looking at these statistics, these abstract medical studies

and numbers, and started to view them just as I would a story, a novel or a film.

After all, a statistic is only a particular version of a story.

And, as with all stories, there are always multiple perspectives and multiple truths.

You can analyze them like literature: When was that statistic taken?

Who was the source group?

Was it self-selecting?

What else do the subjects have in common?

When looking at a statistic in a medical study, you don't have the full picture of your prognosis,

unless you have every perspective, every detail in the story.

And that is something you will never get from a number.

Three years later, my daughter escaped all her damning statistics and is living a full,

happy life, as if it never happened.

When I look closer at her story in its totality, those statistics didn't differentiate based

on age, my prenatal care, or even the actual size of the stroke.

We all know that statistics are useful, but if we rely on them with too much weight, this

can only lead to a breakdown of trust with medicine.

We end up focusing on the 90 percent chance of things going wrong, and, in the process,

neglect the 10 percent chance of things going right.

Perhaps my daughter's story might one day be counted in a future study, and her success

will serve as a tick against those frightening, bigger numbers, because there is an alternate

ending that includes the full picture, and it can be beautiful.
