The principles of animation plus. 10a) Timing (theory)
Hi! I'm Vaggelis from vktoons and I'll talk to you who're interested in learning to animate
about the theory behind the principle of timing in animation.
As you can understandm that principle is about taking advantage of time.
Time is money.
Time is the healer of all things.
Long time no see for this scene... We grew gray hair to finish it!
The first thing the creator must understand
is how much time will his audience need
to get what the next move will be,
how much time they'll need to get the main action itself,
and how much time they'll need to get the reaction.
Remember here the principle of anticipation.
The animator must also know the audience to which he addresses.
Because timing works different in a kids cartoon
and in an adult cartoon, where action is much faster.
I'll take an extreme example. Dora the Explorer.
"Do you see the telephone"?
"Bravo! There is the telephone"!
If you do something like that in an adult cartoon,
you've already lost your audience.
But Dora gives the kids the time needed
to understand what they watch.
Also, timing is different in an animated tv series
where deadlines are very tight,
and in a feature animated film,
where we expect a flow in the movement and that means more frames used
to make a scene.
Finally, timing is very important for learning about the mentality of the character
we watch.
A character doing that quick move has different mentality...
...and a completely different mentality has this one, doing a lazy movement.
