Dear Moises
Telona,
Moises Telona,
thank you for having contributed
to the economical creation
of my movie Endless Poetry.
Thank you very much.
In exchange for that,
I read you this tarot.
Actually, in order to answer the question you asked me
I would have to be a guru,
a master who
comes from India, a spiritual master.
I will do my best to answer it
in my humble capacity as a simple...
a simple human being, a simple artist.
You said: "I don't believe in God
nor in evil.
These are
theories
that the world has
and...
I don't agree with these theories,
neither in God nor in evil"
namely neither in God nor in the Devil.
"I don't believe in God nor in the Devil.
And what can you tell me?"
You ask me, right?
It's not a challenge.
I think it's a call for help because
as you were born in a world
based in religion, weren't you?
And...
And in the belief of the evil...
And even now wars say:
"that country,
that people are evil"
doesn't it?
There's good and there's evil.
And all American movies
about Superman and all these superheroes are about the fight
against the bad guy, the struggle between good and evil,
and everybody talks about God and...
and...
and which God are they talking about? Because
they fight for Gods.
The God of some religion
is trying to destroy
the ones who believe in another religion, isn't it?
That's what happens.
And you don't accept that.
But what do you have left?
What do we have left when we end
with...
with the essential basis
of what human culture has always been, right?
God.
Well,
what can I tell you?
I only can...
I...
I went through that, didn't I?
When I was
4 or 5 years old
in my small hometown a priest gave me a little medallion.
I think it had the Virgin Mary on it.
I happily showed it to my father,
my father threw it in the toilet, he flushed it
and he told me, when I was 4 years old:
"God doesn't exist.
You die and you rot and there is nothing else."
And then he created a neurosis in me that went on until I was 40.
I talked about that in one of my movies called The Dance of Reality.
It's terrible,
as a kid, it's terrible
to have God and the Devil taken away from you,
or the guardian angel, it's terrible
because you grow up without any metaphysical aspirine.
There you are.
Well, and then, if...
if there's no God
and there's no Devil, no God, no evil, what is the meaning of life?
And where am I living?
And this is an illusion,
and I will die and there will be nothing left and this is is nothing.
Yes.
So my whole life I've been fighting to...
to find
the meaning of life.
In the
movie
after The Dance of Reality: Endless Poetry,
I ask myself that, right?
"What is life?"
And I answer it.
Well,
it's an intellectual question.
The mind has questions,
the heart has answers.
Life
has no intellectual definition.
Life has to be lived.
And that's it.
And it must be of some use to us.
And then you start thinking:
"the universe,
right? The universe
is a
collection of stupid balls that float in space."
As my poet friend Enrique Lihn used to tell me.
"They are stupid balls that float in space.
We are living in a stupid ball
that floats in space and that is populated with stupid people."
That's what they told me, right?
But well,
here you've got the Popess.
The Popess is a religious woman:
she believes in God and in the Devil.
And then if you put the Popess away, if you put God and evil away,
you're the one who's left
with your whole life cut away.
Life has no meaning,
you are tied to life
and you have nothing left to do,
nothing left to believe in.
Yes, of course,
you have nothing left to believe in, but you can believe in yourself,
believe in yourself.
You are here, you exist.
This existence
has a meaning for you.
It has a value, whatever it is.
That body you are living in,
I think it took about 400 million years for The Planet Earth
to invent it.
To create a finger
and a hand...
All the forces of the Planet Earth
worked to create your hand.
It created your hand gradually
for you to do what?
The Planet Earth knows it,
the universe knows it.
You don't know it,
you see?
Now, about this...
this part, you are enclosed in your war chariot, you see?
The chariot is the war chariot,
which has no reins
and is pulled by horses that don't know where they are going,
which makes you a nomad.
You realize you have,
you do have somebody:
here is the whole Earth,
the whole Earth
that is creating you,
but at the same time it is being created
by all celestial bodies of the cosmos.
All celestial bodies of the cosmos
are creating you,
ok?
And now here you have death,
(in this case it's death)
and the void comes.
Everything is over.
And here you've got the empress,
who is gestating,
who has the power to gestate,
you see?
Now
if you are an individual alone
you don't solve anything, because you are mortal,
you get old, you are becoming an old man
sicknesses await you,
you see?
And you have to fight not to be poor
in this loneliness.
But if you become humanity
you have it all.
The Earth hasn't created an individual,
or the universe hasn't created an individual,
it has created
humanity.
And human race
is multiplied bit by bit
and has the possibility
to live as many years
ans the universe will live
in its hands.
It has all powers.
It's in its hands.
But
what is there if there's neither God nor Devil?
There's life.
And you can't define that life,
can you?
It's life,
which is indefinable.
The life that has to be lived
and the life that lives us and the life that creates us
and everything is alive!
There is no...
This...
This little stick with which I'm pointing things to you is alive!
It's living matter and atoms.
Everyting is alive.
This piece of paper is alive,
the tarot is a being, it's alive,
apart from animals and plants, minerals are alive,
everything is in a process of change and of life.
But accept the mystery.
There are things that you can't explain
but that you can feel,
and if inside you you feel
life
like an energy
which is the same energy
that creates universes,
you see?
Then you will have a vital force
to do things,
a vital force to accept death
a vital force to accept old age,
a vital force
to live with a sickness if you ever have one
and a vital force
to make a minimalistic
but spiritually rich
life
out of poverty.
Search
for people who are like you,
but not in denial:
search for people who affirm life.
Get rid of friendships
who make you
enjoy life less,
who lead you
towards suicide,
towards self-destruction.
Mix with people
who lead you to the joy of life
and to creativity.
That's all I can tell you,
right?
And I congratulate you
for having contributed to the creation
of a work of art, and not of an industrial, a commercial work of art.
You have reacted
and I congratulate you.
Maybe you were also thinking
that what I would tell you would be useful for you,
who knows?
I tell you that as a humble artist.
I'm not a guru.
I learnt to love life without believing in anything,
and I started to believe in life,
and that's why I started to create, and here I am,
trying to help you.
Thank you very much.
