What do you want to know?
My name is Barbara Migliaccio Spina.
I was born in Locres, a village in Calabre.
I never felt like I had much space in Calabre.
Even if it was the place where I learned all of the principles that guided me through life.
At 18, I decided to leave to Rome to follow a dream.
Discover myself.
The hardest thing I was confronted with during this time was being a woman.
A woman in the culinary industry.
It's already difficult to be a woman in the professional sphere.
It's very complicated if you want to make it.
I started studying cinema.
When you watch a movie, you discover the lives of many people.
You manage to live the life of others.
I grew up in a catering world that had quite a spectacular side to it.
We're all actors, spontaneous actors.
I asked myself which part of the catering industry would allow me to
stay in touch with people and allow me to create something.
So I thought of the bar, which has a creative side to it.
So I found my passion, and I think it's artistic.
Because every day, when I was working in the restaurant and in the bar,
I always managed to interpret a sincere role.
I'm always myself.
But I adapt myself to the people who come in.
It's as if you're taking care of different people every day.
You meddle in their lives.
And when you do a good job, people start confiding in you.
Through this gesture of making a drink, bringing a plat of food,
you see their facial expression change.
In this moment, you haven't just made them happier through a drink.
You're transmitting your energy, your passion.
That's what satisfies me. It's what makes me go home full of adrenaline and joy.
From a professional point of view, I learned something.
When you're at the end of your strength,
and you're focused on a path – you're concentrated –
everything else becomes destabilised.
You're faced with difficulties because you have to show who's boss, right?
I've always worked in a way that guarantees I have some kind of personal satisfaction.
I've often found myself in a situation where I was the only woman surrounded by men.
I don't have an easy personality, I don't let people walk all over me.
So that's why I've often found myself in really tough situations.
I would go out and have a drink alone, sit at the bar,
and I would observe these great barmen that were making cocktails.
As soon as I noticed new techniques, I would copy them.
So then I went to work in a bar for the first time, and this is where
I was supposed to be trained by this amazing bartender. He ditched me after 5 days.
And Barbara found herself alone, managing a bar.
But she made it.
I really made it.
A cocktail bar in Paris was looking for staff.
I didn't hesitate for one moment to follow my instinct.
I went home to Rome on Monday, Wednesday I quit,
and Thursday I took the plane to go to Paris.
Paris!
And I discovered Paris.
At one point, I told myself that this is where I want to live.
You always have to be careful with your desires in life because...
then can come true, and you have to be ready to seize the moment.
I'm 34 years old.
I had a fixed contract in Rome.
My house, my friends, my brother, my car, my life...
I had a heavy heart, as they say.
But as soon as I set foot in Paris,
I told myself: "Oh my god, what have I done?"
This city terrified me.
Paris seemed extremely hostile.
Finding myself here and not having this feeling of victory,
was kind of traumatising in a way.
But I stuck with it. I stayed.
I waited, I started working.
And little by little, I understood that my work here was going to be for personal growth.
One morning, I woke up and I looked at myself in the mirror. It was me.
I was Barbara.
I think that everyone has a path to follow, made up of several roads.
When I think about it,
if I'm here today it's because I stopped myself from time to time,
and I think about all of the things I was forced to confront in my life.
I never accepted compromises.
Not from others nor from myself.
We confront a hurricane of waves every day,
gigantic waves,
but you can only surf the waves that you overcome.
What's on the outside is simply a reflection of what's inside.
When I started smiling, everything around me smiled back.
It's amazing because it's a feeling that has no end to it.
It's always new,
because the wave is never the same, right?
That's why when you start surfing, you can't stop.
The day where you realise something big in your life, you can't stop yourself.
It's the same thing.
Depending on the person in front of me, I came to understand what everyone wants,
to satisfy the demand of the moment.
Some drinks reminded me of my past, my childhood, my adolescence.
It's like a perfume, when a perfume reminds you of something.
With cocktails, you can offer your client a visual experience,
because they see you make it and there are colours.
Olfactory, because there's a scent.
And then the taste, and your energy.
I kept on proving who I was,
as a person but also as a professional.
I followed my professional path through a certain trajectory.
Always with this objective of giving something to someone.
To transmit, to pass on some kind of energy.
And the power of this energy is only revealed to those who are paying attention.
The fact of transmitting this courage,
and getting all the women that I meet to understand
that they can do whatever they want to.
It's not bullshit or empty words.
I'm seriously convinced.
I think that women haven't realised their own power.
I'm not talking about potential, I'm talking about power.
Real power.
