HIIT Style Workout For Triathletes | Stay Fit When You Have To Train Indoors - Duration: 6:43.

- It can be frustrating if you're feeling super fit

and healthy heading into Christmas, and then your

local pool is closed, the roads are too icy to go

cycling or running, and you're surrounded by

unhealthy treats and snacks.

But if all else fails, there is something you can do

to compensate, and you can start by following

this hit star session we designed specifically

for triathletes.

All you need to do is clear a bit of space

in your home, and if you've got someone else around,

why not get a friend or family member to join in

and make it a little bit more fun.

We'll start with skipping, which is

a pretty straightforward exercise, and it's great

for getting your heart rate up and your body warm

ahead of the rest of the exercises.

Now, try and focus on something on the wall in front of you.

Keep your chin nice and high.

You want to keep your shoulders level.

And the idea is, you're bouncing on your toes,

trying to make quite a small movement,

but speed it up and try to maintain that speed

for the whole one minute.

For this exercise, you need a step

and just a little bit of space.

We're going to split it in two,

so the first 30 seconds, you're going to work one leg,

and the second 30 seconds, the other.

And the whole point of this exercise

is to work on your hip drive, so it's great for running.

And the idea, you want to think you're driving

your hips forwards and up with each step.

So to start with, you're going to lift up your right foot,

for example, and then place it in a fairly quick movement

onto the step and drive up through that hip,

bringing your other leg to 90 degrees,

using your arm in parallel.

Then, as you step down, you're going to lift this foot

just off the step to 90 degrees, back down,

and drive again, really remembering, keeping your hips

square, facing forwards, and keeping really good posture,

and thinking of the driving forwards.

This is an explosive movement.

It's a plyometric exercise that's going to help your glutes

to really start firing, and it's great for making you

more reactive when it comes to the run.

So basically, you're going to be driving up onto the box,

landing with both feet together, knees bent.

From there, you're going to step back down.

Make sure you alternate which leg you step back down with,

'cause that's eccentric loading in itself,

and you're going to try to maintain really good form

for the full minute, and you'll find your heart rate

will really go through the roof by the end.

This exercise is quite like speed skating,

and you actually see the speed skaters using this

in their strength and conditioning.

So it's a diagonally forward-sideways hop.

So you're going to be driving from the supporting leg,

so in this situation, I'm going to the right

diagonally forward, so I'm driving off my left,

and the idea is you land solidly on your right leg.

If you've got enough room, do a few going forwards,

and then, when you get the end, you're going to reverse it

and go backwards, so then you'll be driving from

the right leg onto the left, pushing back.

When you're coming backwards, you're using

predominantly your quads and the fronts of your legs.

When you're going forwards, you'll be using the glutes

and the backs of your legs, your hamstrings.

So this is a great exercise for cycling.

Don't worry if you haven't got enough room to go

diagonally forwards and backwards, though.

You can do it in a lateral space.

You need about this much room, and you're going to

jump from one leg off the the right,

then back onto the left leg, landing on that.

And you'll get pretty much the same benefit.

And remember, for this exercise,

you've got to keep this going at full intensity

for the full minute.

This is a swimming specific exercise.

So using a TheraBand or improvising with some other

elastic you can find, you want to attach it

to something solid that's going to be about shoulder height

when you're bent over from the hips.

If you are using a door, though, make sure no one else

is around or is going to be coming through it.

And you want to take up some tension,

lean forwards, and then have a slight bend in the wrist

as though you were doing your swimming stroke.

Remember to keep the elbow high as you would when swimming.

From here, you're going to pull all the way through,

so double-arm pulling movement.

If you've got a really stiff TheraBand or a stiffer

piece of elastic, then you can break it into two sections,

and you can do 30 seconds the front of your stroke,

this is the front part of your catch,

and then you can do 30 seconds at the back.

Again, with this exercise, it's about good form.

So for these switching jump lunges,

you want your hips facing forward,

but also keeping them level, so when you actually land,

you don't want to be dropping on either side.

So it's really important to have strong core engaged,

so it's a great exercise for running,

and you'll also be using your arms to replicate that motion

and helping with the explosive activity.

A press-up is pretty straightforward.

You want to have your hands just outside of your shoulders,

palms facing down.

Now, don't worry if you think you can't do press-ups.

I didn't used to be able to either, but there's lots of ways

you can make it a little bit easier.

So first of all, the basic press-up,

you want to get into a plank position,

even holding that will be engaging your core

and your shoulders.

You want to have your shoulders in the nice,

neutral position, not too high up, not dropped down.

From here, you're just going to bend your elbows,

lower yourself down, try to get your nose

to touch the mat if you can.

If you're finding that too hard, go onto your knees,

but make sure if you're on your knees,

you're not sticking your bottom in the air.

You want to keep your back so the line

from your knees to your shoulders needs to be straight.

And then, just lower down from that position, and back up.

And try and keep these going for the fully minute.

This is another core exercise,

but it really focuses on the muscles on your back,

so a lot of extension movement for this.

So you're going to lie face down,

and you're going to be working diagonals,

so opportunity hands and arms to offset leg.

So starting with your arms out in front of you,

as I lift my right arm, the whole arm's going to

come off the floor.

I'm going to lift my left leg at the same time,

focusing on squeezing my glute to do so.

So as I lift this arm, I squeeze my left glute

and lift the leg up, hold it, and lower it back down.

Then, on to the opposite side, squeezing my right glute

and lifting up my arm, focusing on really

squeezing all the muscles on the back side of your body.

This core exercise you want to focus on holding

everything tight around your middle,

and no cheating, 'cause you can a little bit on this one.

So you're making a slight V shape or a bit of a U,

I suppose. You want your shoulders just off the ground

and your feet just off the ground,

and you're going to do a kicking motion with your legs,

and that dynamic movement just adds in a bit more

of a challenge to the core.

Just as you would with any other training session,

make sure you put in a cool-down

and finish off with some stretches.

And I know it can be frustrating at this time of year

if you can't get out and you can't do the training

that's on your plan, but with a bit of flexibility,

you'll be amazed at how you can actually maintain

a decent amount of strength and fitness.

If you've enjoyed this, give it a thumbs-up like.

And to subscribe to GTN, just click on the globe.

And if you want some more ideas on indoor training,

then Mark's made a video on TheraBand exercises

just here, and if you are lucky enough to venture outside,

and you want some tips on cycling in the wind,

just watch this video here.

VAN LIFE: HOW TO Maxxair fan install!! (3/3) | Hobo Ahle - Duration: 7:01.

So this is gonna be video 3/3, where I actually install the fan.

Now unlike the other two which I filmed as tutorials, this one's going to be kind of

a more like: here's what I did : type of thing, but I mean I still broke it up

into like different parts and then I'm gonna go over all the steps as to like

what I did, how I did it, why I did it, and all that jazz. And of course before I go

any further I have to express my gratitude because I had to have help

with this. Like there was no way I was gonna cut a hole in the freaking roof or

install a fan by myself like I just- I just don't think that I could have done it

So I'm very very grateful for that fact, you know, that I had someone to help me.

And then as far as like "why, why two fans?" just for better air circulation.

The idea is that like one fan will be pulling air in while the other fan will

be pushing air out. And yeah, so two fans. First off, here's a list of the supplies

that I used. The fan, the plastic fan frame, two drills (again just to avoid

changing bits but only one was necessary), screws, a jigsaw, I kept handy a pry bar, a

screwdriver, and pliers for good measure but only ended up using the screwdriver,

butyl tape, silicone, a caulk gun, Sharpie, painters tape, plastic sheeting, duct tape,

cardboard, the wood frame, the plastic adapter, safety glasses, and a mask.

And then even a few things that are not pictured here such as a vacuum, a sanding

sponge, scissors, and a cheap utility blade. I think that's everything LOL

So step one was prep work. In order to make cleaning up a bit easier and so that

fiberglass didn't get everywhere. For this I used plastic sheeting. The first

time I had it laid out on the ground and the second time I used duct tape and

stuck it to the roof. Neither was better than the other, just different. Step two: I

marked where I was going to cut on the roof. In order to do this, I made a

cardboard template and then traced it onto the roof. You could just as easily

trace the plastic frame or measure it out. Now for step three... the scary step,

cutting a hole in the roof. I put a vacuum on the roof because it was easier

to do this dentist style and vacuum up the debris as one person used the jigsaw.

But first I checked my drawing and the measurements like a million times.

I wanted to be absolutely sure that this was gonna go well.

Next I piloted holes at all four corners of the square. And here is by far the

most nerve-wracking part, taking the jigsaw and connecting the corners. Once

that was finally over we just sanded it down. Then we just double-checked our

work and took down the plastic sheeting.

Step four: butyl tape. So you can put this on the

fan frame or on the roof. I chose to do the fan frame because it seemed like it

would be easier to fix if I somehow messed it up and because of how I'm

going to attach the plastic adapter from the second video in this series. So I put

two layers of butyl tape on the plastic fan frame, my butyl tape was super thin

so I needed three strips to create one full layer, so six shirts for me in all.

I was also mindful not to overlap the tape at the corners, so that way

everything would stay level. Here we had just finished the first layer and still

had one more to go, so we switched roles and proceeded to go

for round two. And just to give you a taste of how tedious and slow going this

actually was here's some of it in real time:

Okay anyways, after the second layer we just trimmed off the extra butyl tape

from the corners. Once that was done, we placed the adapter pieces on top. And

lastly, we added another two layers of butyl tape on top of that. So another

six strips per side. Just like the first layer, we made sure not to overlap the

corners, but we placed the tape over the seams between each of the plastic pieces.

Here it is ready to go. There's the fan frame, two layers of butyl

tape, the plastic adapter, and another two layers of tape that will adhere to the

roof once flipped over. So now that the plastic fan frame and the adapter are

attached, step five was to take those two along with the wooden fan frame from

part one and attach them all to the roof. To do this, first I carefully place the

fan frame and adapter into the space we had already cut out. Just a side note,

these metal pieces are supposed to be on the sides, not the top in the bottom. For

the first fan, setting everything inside the designated space was no problem. For

the second fan however, the roof bowed a significant amount in that area. So we

added a few layers of butyl tape to try and make it as close to level as we

could. Now that everything was set in the roof I piloted holes around the whole frame.

Next is where I definitely needed an extra set of hands. One person had to

hold the wooden frame in place from the inside so that I could then pilot holes

and drill screws into all the layers at the same time. Once that was done we cut

off the excess butyl tape. Step six: weatherproofing. I laid down some

painters tape in a square around the fan frame. Next we put tons of silicone. We

let it sit for about 10 minutes and then peeled off the painters tape. For this

step, putting sealant around the fan frame is necessary, but you can

definitely opt out of the painters tape technique. I just did it so that the

silicone would look a bit neater. And the last step, step 7: attaching the actual

fan. So when you attach your fan to your roof, you have to do so with the fan

fully open. In order for these metal pieces to line up with the screw holes

on the sides of the fan I had to take a screwdriver and just push them up ever

so slightly. Once they lined up it was as easy as

just screwing the fan into the rest of the setup.

So that was a process as to how we installed both of those fans and I'm

just super stoked that they're finally finished, they're done, and they look

amazing. So I'm gonna go admire them a little bit more maybe take some pictures

and I'll see you guys next time.

Life without a mobile phone - Duration: 4:46.

Daniel Hellemann is on the move, but in a different way: without a mobile phone.

The 30-year-old disposed of his device two years ago.

He threw it into a container for used electrical and electronic devices.

While other commuters are busy with their computers and phones

in the early morning, he focuses on himself.

There's plenty going on in my head.

I dwell on my thoughts and give them free rein.

But I imagine also just being able to be

and not always having to do something.

Daniel has been training as a landscape gardener for six months.

Before that he studied philosophy and English.

Working with his hands is good for him.

Being able to concentrate on the job in hand is important to him.

That's partly why he got rid of his phone.

The cinema in your mind that kicks in when a text message arrives -

all the stories you start imagining.

"How does he mean that? How does she mean that? How should I say that?"

It takes so much energy that's just wasted.

Fewer distractions, more life - this is Daniel's credo.

Having an employee who is not permanently reachable

means that his boss has to plan and prepare better.

I admire him a little, yes but there have been times

when it was difficult - when he was in the car

and I wanted to tell him something. Then it was irritating.

But these are details.

Daniel was increasingly bothered by the fixation with mobile phones and

because his self-image was defined more and more via telephone activities.

Who's written what? Who's in which chat?

In shedding his mobile phone, Daniel also relinquished some of

the control - deliberately. That's precisely the liberating aspect.

I really like the independence.

Simply ... "How is it?" "Yes, let's see."

For me it's sometimes....

An extreme example is: you're at home and in order to see what the weather's like

you look at an app instead of out of the window.

He says he doesn't miss his mobile phone, and one can believe him.

But some things take longer,

such as dealing with offices and local authorities.

When I come home in the evening,

all these offices have already closed.

That's the only thing I sometimes find annoying.

But then I think, yes ...

That's how it is. It'll work out somehow.

These things can also be resolved by writing a letter.

Reducing the pace of life, slowing down, living in the moment,

this is Daniel's journey.

He likes to spend quiet evenings.

At home, where he lives with his girlfriend Marina, he likes to cook.

A naturopathic physician, she was quite surprised

when he suddenly didn't call any more.

I thought about what the reason could be

as to why I didn't hear from him.

Then I got a letter in which he said he'd thrown his phone away.

So I though: "OK, we'll communicate by letter."

And that's how it was in the beginning, before we lived together.

Writing letters is all very well,

but isn't it more difficult to cultivate friendships

without a mobile phone?

No.

I wasn't more social just because I had a mobile phone.

So ...

I'm so ...

People knew that there were times when I wouldn't answer,

when I wouldn't call back or that I'd forget

to organize something.

Actually ... If I do something these days,

if I try to organize something,

I do it much more thoroughly.

Someone who doesn't spend hours surfing on a phone, writing texts

or participating in chats, suddenly has lots of time.

In Daniel's case, time for music.

He prefers to hold his guitar than his mobile phone.

The ideal way to end a day in a smartphone-free life.

now something which I'd like to dive into next is to just dive a little bit

further into your own publishing business because it does provide a

traditional route for office but at least from what I've kind of seen from

the outside looking in and from the conversations I've got you in deposit

how they self-publishing feel I hope this describes it fairly well so

tell us I suppose what makes you different to those Big Five publishers

where a book can take two three four years to really go from idea to shelf

and how you best serve your offers and clients during all that yeah great

question so here's the spectrum of options that you have as an author and

if you visualize this on one end of the spectrum is self-publishing right you do

everything yourself you keep all of the proceeds there's plenty of tools that

make this all possible now many people are doing it at the other end of the

spectrum you have traditional publishing where you write a book proposal you get

a literary agent you submit you hope that you get interest maybe you get a

deal maybe you have to pay for that deal maybe you get in advance but if you do

then you've already done something else that's pretty substantial in your career

with your platform in any event with a traditional deal you give away eighty to

ninety percent of the royalties from the book and you largely sign over the

intellectual property so if you want to do a series or merchandising or

screenplay there's a whole lot of other things that can happen because of a book

and you give up a lot of your rights to those in most traditional publishing

deals we operate in the middle we are what I call a hybrid publishing company
