Coffee Chat with Ray - Family Connections - Duration: 8:54.

Hello! Welcome to the next "Coffee Chat with Ray!"

My name is Raymond Rodgers.

This is Brian Berlinski.

Brian: Hello.

Ray: The topic of this Coffee Chat will be the Family Connections Program under DCARA.

Before we get to the details of the program, I want to introduce Brian and let him tell us about himself.

Brian: Hello, Ray! I am Brian Berlinski.

I am thrilled to work here at DCARA in the Family Connections Department.

My role is Deaf Mentor.

What does that mean?

I meet with families that may not know about Deaf Culture and the Deaf Community.

They have a Deaf child but are unsure how to raise a Deaf child.

Maybe they are scared and not sure of what options are out there.

Maybe they feel overwhelmed by too much information.

How can they navigate through that to make the best choices for their family?

Maybe they are curious about American Sign Language (ASL).

When I meet the families, I can teach them some signs.

I can provide information on how to navigate through the school system.

I can provide tips if their Deaf child is frustrated with communication issues

How they can sit down with their child in that moment to connect with them and give them what they need.

Those are some of the nice services I look forward to providing to families.

Ray: Do you feel that there is a high need for this service, recently, in the Bay Area?

Or do you think other organizations provide this service? Is DCARA the only place that provides this service?

Brian: I am a Deaf father and I have three Deaf children.

Through those experiences, I have met many other parents.

Many of them are hearing parents, who are new to Deaf Culture and the Deaf Community.

I can see that they feel lost, confused and not sure what to do. I see a high need for this service. Yes.

And I am thrilled that DCARA provides a service to satisfy their need.

They can feel more comfortable. More connected to their Deaf child.

So that their child does not feel different or strange. They feel a part of their family.

The Deaf child is just different--not better or worse.

Just different. They have different communication needs. Different identity. Different cultural needs.

That's something the family can include in their lives as a whole.

That's what a family mentor can provide: The support that they need.

Ray: It seems that you already have a lot of experience as a father and with Deaf children.

You picked up ways to help families who can benefit from your experience. Right?

Brian: Yes. I grew up going to a mainstream public school.

My experience was going through that school system. I know what it looks like.

Now my children go to the Deaf School, so I am familiar with that as well.

I am involved with my children's IEP (Individualized Education Program).

That's something that all parents need to know about.

At first it seems that they are afraid of IEP and the school system and what to do

but I bring my experience as a Deaf child growing up in the school system and as a Deaf father raising Deaf children.

I can offer tips, wisdom, experience, ideas, and a different point-of-view.

And let them make choices based on what they feel is best for their family.

Ray: Will you be providing services all over California? Or just in the Bay Area?

Brian: Not all over California. We are focused on providing services in the Bay Area

If a family lives far from our office, they don't have to make a long trip to us. I can come to them.

I can meet them at their home for a home visit.

I can show them how they can change their home to make it more accessible for a Deaf child.

Or, if they don't feel comfortable meeting at home, we can meet at a location near their home

where they feel comfortable meeting and getting to know me

and learning how to raise their Deaf child.

I want to create a safe environment so they feel they can learn and ask me questions

and be willing to make mistakes so that they can learn for their Deaf child.

I can meet them where they are.

Ray: I can imagine that a family with a baby may have a hard time finding a babysitter.

It is easier for you to come to them.

Will you teach the parents how to communicate with their child? Exactly what will you do in their home?

Brian: Yes. I will teach them how to communicate with their Deaf child.

Even if the Deaf child or the parents know no sign langauage at all, they can start with me.

I can teach them some sign language. Not only that, but I can teach them some non-verbal communication like...

flashing the lights, using the visual environment and touch to communicate with their child.

Ray: Perfect! Thank you for sharing with us.

Now I want to talk about this painting by Mary Rappazzo from Southern California, a Deaf woman artist and painter.

The painting is connected to family, so I thought I would take advantage of you being here to ask you:

What do you think of this painting?

Ray: What is your interpretation?

Brian: I am an artist too. I like to paint. And I have a background in Art Therapy as well.

I can see there are a lot of messages there about a sense of representing family.

And one child has a some kind of technology with headphones on their chest.

So that, I feel, identifies the child as Deaf.

And I notice the hands are where? On the table.

They are not in motion. They are not signing.

Maybe they are communicating through talking. Or through facial expression.

Ray: They have no expression.

Brian: No expression. Yes.

Ray: She is the only one with a smile. What does that mean?

Brian: It seems like their thinking is gone.

Ray: Maybe she is smiling and nodding "yes".

Brian: This reminds me of my experience growing up in my hearing family.

I remember what it felt like at the dinner table. They all talked and talked and it all went by me.

I missed all their stories, teasing, humor. The talk of family history, ancestors and other relatives. I missed all that.

So I see this and feel for that Deaf child.

Ray: You feel a connection with that Deaf child. Brian: Yes.

Ray: I find this person interesting. How they are separate. Easy to miss. What does that mean?

Brian: Right. Why is that person not seated with them? Why are they separate and in the background?

I am curious what that represents.
