I am filming this before work so let's
see how fast I can talk. Hey everyone, my name
is Kylie and I want to bring you what
I read in January and what I hope to
read in February. So one of my goals for
2017 was to actually focus on reading
and being excited for reading, not being
excited for finishing books. So this is
going to be a shorter wrap up than most
because I only finished two books in the
month of January but I'm super excited
to talk about it because I get to talk
about these books for longer because I
don't have that many books to talk about.
So I started a full-time job in January
and how do people with full-time jobs
actually find the time to read? I
just feel like all of my time is gone now
so when do I read? So the first book that I
actually finished in January was for a
book club that I started and that was
the Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith
AKA JK Rowling. I really enjoyed this. I
ended up giving this 4 stars. This is
a mystery novel following a man named
Cormoran Strike and his helper, assistant,
person, Robin, and they are trying to
discover the mystery of a supposed
suicide because the woman who they think
committed suicide, her brother, her like
adopted brother comes to Cormoran and
wants to know what happened. He is sure
that she didn't commit suicide.
Cormoran kind of has a tie to this
family so he tries to help this person
out and it just gets juicy from there. I
thought this book was really good. I
thought the beginning was like super
slow and I'm surprised I got through it
because it was so slow.
It was just so different for me because
of the omniscient narration style. I am
used to you know, JK Rowling being from
Harry Potter's perspective but no. We
were in Cormoran's head and then a
paragraph later we were getting
something from Robin;s head and it just..I
don't know. I don't know .I don't know how
that sat with me but I still really
enjoyed it. I have the second book so
hopefully I can read that sometime soon.
And the last actual book that I finished
in January was Twelve Kings in Sharakhai
by Bradley Beaulieu. I don't think I say
that right but I'm sorry. I have a full
review video coming for this book but
let me just say,
I super duper enjoyed it. I ended up
giving this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars
and I just really loved it. The rich
desert world that he has created in this
book feels so realistic. This book takes
place in a city called Sharakhai which is
the great desert city of Sharakhai and
twelve kings rule over this city and they
have done so for over 400 years because
the Gods granted these kings immortality.
So these Kings are running this city.
This girl named Çeda, who's actually
a pit fighter, she takes on these Kings
one day and makes it her personal
mission to get revenge on these Kings
because they killed her mother.
If that doesn't sound great, it was really
great. So we flip back and forth in here
between present-day Sharakhai and like
five to seven years in Çeda's past
and I thought that made the book go a
little bit slower because of those
flashbacks because I thought the
present-day plotline was actually going
pretty fast and then I would you know
get slogged down because I'm like "Oh I
don't want to read about Çeda from
seven years ago." I think those flashbacks
served a real purpose because we got to learn
a lot more about Çeda so we got to
see how well-rounded her character was
but I just think they slowed down the plot a
little bit. On a funny side note, if you
read Throne of Glass and you were
expecting Celaena Sardothian to be this
awesome, kick-ass character that was
humble,
that was not a just stuck up prick, I
think you will really enjoy Çeda. Çeda is
what I think Celaena Sardothian should
have been. She is awesome, she is a pit
fighter, she has killed people in these
pits,
she is so talented with all these
weapons and yet she's so humble.
I just really enjoyed her character and
I think you should read this if this
sounds at all interesting to you.
So also in january I read about 80%
of the Cavern of Black Ice on my
iPad and this book has like over a
thousand pages so I've read like 800
pages so I feel like talking about it
because I almost got through that one, but not
quite. So anyways, a Cavern of Black Ice
follows kind of this duo of characters. One
of the characters is Raif Severance
and he belongs to a clan in this world
and these clans are kind of like these
different tribes in this ice, wintry
setting and they are going to war with
each other because of events that happen
in the first of the book. And the other
character we follow is Ash and all Ash
knows that she was left at birth outside
of this gate on this mountain in this
city and the like protector of this city,
the ruler of the city took her in and
now odd things are starting to happen
and he's kind of getting really
protective of her. Not wanting her to go
outside, making sure she's eating things,
looking at her garbage,
it's just really weird and Ash wants to
know what the heck is going on. These two
characters, based on events, they end up
coming together and I don't know, I
really like it so far. I think some of
the elements are a little weird, like the
instant bond that they can, you know, they
have. I just don't get that but I really
like the politics between these clans
and the like settled cities in this world.
I think it's really interesting so I'm
really excited to finish that one off in
February. And what else I hope to
read in February is the Book of
Speculation by Erika Swyler and the
book is currently in my purse to take to
work to hopefully read on my lunch break.
I don't really know a lot about it
because I'm only like on the third
chapter but it follows a boy named Simon
and he is a librarian and he gets a
mysterious book sent to him in the mail
one day and he doesn't know why this
book was sent to him. The person that
sent it thinks that he is related to
somebody that's in the book. The book is from like
a circus troupe.
Simon's mother drowned mysteriously when
he was younger and he thinks that this
book is somehow tied to that. That's a lot for
only three chapters being read but I'm
excited to read this one for book club.
Alright everyone, I hope you enjoyed what
I read in January and what I hope to
read in February. I know this was a
little bit shorter but I just didn't
have that many books to talk about so
that's fine. Hopefully in February I will
be able to find a little bit more time
to read because in January I just felt
like my schedule was so constricting, I
just couldn't find time to read. Give
this video a big thumbs up if you enjoyed it
and comment down below with books that
you read at the start of 2017. Until next
time, goodbye!
