Youtube daily make Feb 23 2017

Hey, guys.

Welcome back.

Today, I've got a little bit of a rant video for you.

It's all on foundation.

Before I begin though, I wanted to remind you that you should sign up for my email list

because in addition to making YouTube videos, I blog.

I usually write about five to six blog posts a week.

If you sign up for my email list, you get an email once a day with whatever I've done

for that day whether it's a blog post or a video, and I usually will include giveaway

information, and tips, and stuff like that, so you should sign up.

This is really a how-I-wish-brands-would-make-foundation video because I feel like I have wasted so

much money on foundation over the years trying to find the perfect foundation, and there's

almost always something wrong with them.

I realized that there are about eight different things that brands could do that would make

it all better.

The number one thing that brands could do is have at least two different types of foundations.

Have a foundation for normal to oily skin and one for normal to dry skin.

You have two basic skin types that really need to be addressed.

You have people who are dry like me or people who are oily, which is how I used to be until

I went on my rosacea medication.

Now, I'm not going to lie, I used to think that I needed a full coverage foundation to

hide my rosacea or I wouldn't be happy.

What I've come to realize over like the past six months or so is that I can use a sheer

foundation if it's, one, a good match for my skin tone.

Two, if it's hydrating.

That's really what seems to matter to my skin type.

It's just unfortunate that there are very few hydrating foundations that are actually

a good match for my skin tone.

While, yes, I can mix a white mixer into any foundation to make it a better match for my

skin tone, sometimes, it gets frustrating having to mix my foundation every single day.

That's why I really appreciate when I find a foundation that's a good match for my skin

tone that I don't have to mix and that's actually moisturizing enough for my face.

So far, there is one product that I don't have to mix at all that's a perfect match

for my face, that's hydrating, that I love, and that's the Idun Minerals Foundation.

I'll put a link so you can check out my review of that foundation because I love it.

The number two thing that I wish brands would do is be consistent with their nomenclature

for naming as well as like the shades.

For example, if you're a .5 in like their sheer foundation, it'd be nice to also be

a .5 in say their medium coverage foundation.

I've noticed with some brands, that's just not the case, that there's a discrepancy between

the shades, so even if you're .5 in one, you may not be .5 in the other.

I would also like it if the names were not just always like food, or pottery, or anything

like that.

I don't really care if a brand uses cat names like Meow or if they use numbers like Urban

Decay.

I just want it to be consistent.

The number three thing that I wish brands would do when they make a foundation range

is to have helpful shade descriptions.

It is not helpful to me for them to have the name basically like "Cool Bisque" and

not have any shade description.

That's absolutely useless in my opinion.

Descriptions that I find useful would be, "Very fair with warm undertone," "Very

fair with cool undertone," "Very fair with neutral undertone," "Very fair with

olive undertone."

Stuff like that is so much more useful than "Light Bisque," "Light Ivory," "Cocoa."

On that note, I think foundations should have four different undertones.

You should have your cool, your warm, your neutral, and your olive because I feel like,

especially if you're olive, it's so hard to find foundations and nobody seems to acknowledge

that.

A lot of people seem to think that you can either get away with cool or warm, and that's

really not the way it works.

I do at least think that it's a little bit better whenever you see lines that gear their

foundations more towards being sheer and neutral because sheer and neutral seems to work with

a wider variety of skin tones, but it's not perfect for everyone.

Number four, and this is more just a general gripe.

I really wish that people would not be so obsessed with the MAC numbering system.

The MAC numbering system is not perfect.

It is not the be-all-end-all of makeup.

In fact, it's funny because I interviewed Vic Casale, the guy who was … the person

who developed the numbering system for MAC.

He also developed the numbering system for Cover FX, and he's like, "Yeah.

When I went to Cover FX, I had the chance to remake it correctly," because he feels

like the NW and NC is too confusing for people, which I agree.

The way Cover FX does it is they have N for neutral, P for cool, and G for warm.

That's far less confusing than NW and NC, so I wish people would get over their obsession

with it.

Number five.

When brands are making concealers to go along with their foundation lines, please, for the

love of God, do not make your lightest concealer darker than your lightest foundation.

What do you expect your lightest foundation wearer to do for a concealer if you do not

have a concealer that is lighter than that foundation?

They're not going to be able to wear your concealer.

It's just crazy.

I'm looking at you, Too Faced.

You did this with your Born This Way foundation line.

Your lightest concealer is darker than your lightest foundation, Snow.

It makes no sense.

Number six, brands that need to acknowledge all global shades of beauty.

What do I mean by that?

I mean, the people are not just 50 shades of beige.

I mean that you have people that are fair-skinned.

You have people who are very deep-skinned.

You need to offer foundations for all of the range of skin tones.

It's 2017.

In 2017, we should not have people who are at the deeper end of the spectrum unable to

buy a foundation from a brand because it doesn't exist.

I have heard all different reasons from brands as to why they don't offer deep foundation

shades.

Some stuff is really crazy.

It's like, "Well, women of color don't buy foundation."

No, that's not true.

I know many women who do.

"Women of color don't buy from our brand."

Well, that's like a chicken and egg problem.

Women of color may not buy from your brand if you don't offer a foundation shade that

they can buy.

There's not even an effort to include them.

That's bad.

One of the other things I've heard is that, "Well, it's too hard to make foundations

for deeper skin tones.

They always go ashy."

That sounds like you need a better product development person.

Anyway, whatever the excuse is, I think it's ridiculous because there are so many brands

who are doing it right.

If you look at Cover FX, they offer from shade N-0 to like N-120.

That is a wide range of foundations.

I think they have … I want to say they have over 40 different foundation shades in some

of their lines, so they really are making an effort to be inclusive for all global shades

of beauty.

I think they're doing a great job.

Kat Von D is doing a great job.

Urban Decay is doing a pretty good job too.

Those are just three brands, but they're all making an effort to make foundations for

deeper skin tones as well as lighter skin tones, so they're covering it all.

Other brands who aren't even making an effort, you have no excuse.

It's 2017.

Get with the picture.

People are not just beige.

Number seven.

If you are going to make a primer to go with your foundation, make sure that they actually

match.

If you have a silicone-based foundation, make sure that your primer is a silicone-based

primer.

Don't have a water-based primer that may or may not work with your silicone-based foundation.

I have a video that actually explains how to find out if your foundation and your primer

are compatible.

I know some people don't believe in using primers at all.

Other people swear by them, especially if you have oily skin, so make sure you check

out that video.

Number eight.

Please, please stop putting fragrance in your foundation.

Please stop this.

Fragrance is the number one reason that I break out.

It's the number one reason that a lot of people break out from a product.

Stop adding fragrance to foundation.

And your skin care, it shouldn't be there either.

It's not good for sensitive skin.

It's not good for people who have any sort of skin issues.

It causes them to break out, so just stop it.

It's not good.

Don't do it.

I hope you enjoyed this rant video about foundations.

I just had a lot that I needed to get off of my chest that's been driving me crazy

because I look through my foundation drawer, and I'm like, "How the hell can I have

two, maybe three foundations I can wear?

How is this possible?

With all of the money that I was spending on foundations, how is this possible?"

Yeah.

Anyway, what are your gripes about foundations?

What do you wish brands would do when it comes to making new foundations?

#Games Namco Needs To Make For Nintendo Switch - Duration: 4:24.

If you are watching chronologically yesterday I looked at Namco, but for those of you who

just saw this video because you like Namco I'll just do this to catch you up.

With that out of the way I think Nintendo owns Baten Kaitos, but if

Namco still owns any bit, they should just say "Hey, Nintendo let's rerelease these as

a HD collection."

I mean look at this art!

I don't know if Nintendo got Xenosaga as well, it may have stayed with Namco, in which case

rereleasing those

underated games with HD textures really needs to happen.

How about some sequels to Pac-Man games, maybe a new Pac-Man World Rally if Namco keeps the

team responsible for the

mobile sequel far, far away.

Maybe Pac-Man vs. 2 since it could kind of be done a lot better now, maybe a new Pac-Man

platformer.

Despite being kind of dead, I think a racing game like Ridge Racer would do very well with

the 2 joycons allowing 2-player races at all times.

I'd also like to see Soulcalibur return because of the

Switch having 2 joycons.

They could even have Link return in another cameo only this time BOW styled and wielding

many weapons.

Also why not bring Tekken 7 over in June as well?

They brought the last Tekken to Wii U.

And of course when Tekken X Street Fighter does finally come, it should come to Switch.

Also how about Namco make or port a Katamari game to Switch, I mean the joycons could really

simulate the motions of rolling a growing ball and the HD rumble could

make it feel like you are touching the things in the ball.

Why has Nintendo never got a Katamari game?

Seriously?

Nintendo, handhelds and RPGs go together like magic, so bring Tales of Berseria to Switch

and possibly a compilation of many of the other games or just put them all on the eShop.

I would also support Namco making sequels to some of their older games.

And of course, there is the huge audience for their anime time in games like Gundam,

Digimon, dragon balls, Naruto and one piece and they should be there for those who like

anime tie-ins.

Older Tekken, Tales, Soulcalibur and the Pac-Man world games should all make it to the eShop.

One other thing

about the eShop is there is much less financial risk, meaning Namco could test the waters

with an old Katamari to see if the audience is there.

Again though, Namco should push as much of their library as possible to the eShop.

What Namco games are you hoping make it to Switch?

The comment I'd like to highlight today, All41Review said

"you're a little awkward in a funny way and I don't 100% agree with you but you make great

points and interpretations in this video.

Very interested to see what else you think in the future."

I found this funny because an ex girlfriend said something similar to me after watching

one of my videos.

I was less comfortable with the camera then though, I mean it is still a little weird

in that I know I need to look here, but when I start talking my ADD kicks in and I sometimes

think I should look here or I get distracted by my notes.

Maybe he meant like the end where I couldn't find my stop button or drink an entire cup

of coffee, which I found that funny and humanizing and that's why I left that in, because I do

try to cut out most of the interruptions where cars go 60 over and it sounds like a plane

is taking off or if I space for seconds after losing my thoughts or to delineate different

subjects.

Anyway here is probably Capcom, in case you actually care about Capcom and whatever youtube

thinks is relevant.

How to make a Bonsai pot of laminate - Duration: 4:08.

hello, today we try to make a bonsai pot

of laminate, laminate scrap and

with minimal tools, we need a pencil

laminate glue and

a saw that's all

we try to make simple

I do not know how long shall withstand, but

I do quickly, in a big hurry

and let's do this

Lets's go

So it will be bottom of the pot and will be drilling

and we must do measures

We will cut pieces of laminate

will be the walls of the pot

now we cut, something like

and now we measure again

as need those pieces

of smaller size

see that here I will cut

and make the sign

Now we cut again

Now again make a mark

and We will cut again, will get narrower

will be fixed size

so we cut

and we have completed cutting, I drill this thing

Now you have to cementing and

Look what we do, we open this glue

we put here glue

we put, and we will try

We do not know how will resist glue

before putting soil in a pot

I do Pots resistant, bolted

I will see

now cementing

so, keep pressing

so now and this

slowly slowly, I will succeed

so next

You should lining that side as you see

to keep well

and it remained glued to the last part

Look how small piece

and work is nearly finished

and IM glad

look, what pot I made

from scrap laminate

I hope to withstand the glue, if not

I can do some stuff

we will see, we will plant in the pot

a pomegranate tree planted from seed

and it will transform into bonsai

I am a beginner at this thing and

that is, I will do what I can

and look what went out

I made many holes, it's great

I like, for the first time is good

and thank you for watching

How a car's design helps make it safer in a crash - Duration: 2:10.

We exist to reduce injuries fatalities

and losses from crashes that occur on

roadways.

In the beginning of the crash what we get

is the barrier loading the front bumper

and a lot of those forces are then

transferred directly to the front

longitudinal structure inside that

surrounds the engine compartment and then

we start pushing in directly to the

wheel and the steering components which

then push push directly into some of the

occupant compartment areas. The occupant

compartment held up extremely well. It did

not collapse around the occupant and the

dummies injury measures look very good.

The fact that there's no deformation

in the A-pillar it means that

intrusion into the cabin was minimal.

One is protecting the occupants, the other is

protecting the structure of the

passenger compartment so in a collision

you don't want any intrusion into the

passenger compartment and then the third

is having effective crumple zones that

absorb the energy. When consumers look

for a new vehicle they should be looking

for a vehicle that performs well in a

range of different crash modes - front,

side, rear impact, rollover and many new

vehicles today come with collision

avoidance features that can help reduce

or prevent crashes from occurring.

Features like collision warning or

auto brake system.

How to Make Money with a Side Hustle - Duration: 6:58.

Hi guys, Bridget from Money After Graduation here and I wanted to talk about a topic that

I just got a question on, and it is one of my favorites, and that is starting a side

hustle to boost your savings or debt repayment.

For those of you that don't know what side hustle is referring to, it's a small or part-time

job that you take on in order to increase your monthly income to reach a financial goal.

What constitutes a side hustle can be anything from walking your neighbor's dog to working

part-time at Starbucks.

It's really up to you.

When I was in university and when I was paying off student loans, I was obsessed with side

hustles.

I had so many different ones and they're hands-down the reason why I was able to graduate with

only $21,000 of student loans and why I was able to pay that balance off in less than

2 years.

When it comes to finding a side hustle, the first thing I would suggest that you do is

try to leverage a talent or skill that you have.

Usually if there's something you can do better than other people can do, you can get more

money for it.

As just an example, when I was in my undergraduate degree, I got my degree in Chemistry so that's

what I was really good at.

So I always tutored Chemistry throughout my undergraduate degree, and even for a year

after I graduated when I was working full-time at my regular 9-to-5 job.

As a Chemistry tutor, I could make $25 to $30 an hour, so I really could make a ton

of money by only working 5 or 10 hours per week.

This really helped me pay my bills while I was in school, and then to pay down my debt

and seed my retirement accounts after I graduated.

Even know when I feel really broke, I think, "I could always go back and teach Organich

Chem I".

So when you're looking for a side hustle that you can do, I want you to think of a musical

instrument you can play, a second language you can teach, maybe you're really good at

designing wedding invitations and you can sell them on Etsy, maybe you're an artist

and you can sell custom portraits or something else.

All these things can be wildly profitable and only take a short amount of time in your

week, and they're really flexible around your own schedule which is what makes them preferable

to actually taking on a part-time job.

That said...

Working a job that has shifts, like serving tables, is typically an awesome way to bring

in some extra money because you can do it outside of regular working hours and on weekends.

I know it sucks to give up your Friday or Saturday nights, but it sucks way more to

be in debt five years longer than you have to.

I won't lie, having a second job on top of your regular job or while you're still going

to school is totally exhausting, but it will teach you time management and it will really

help your finances.

Sometimes you can fit things in really nicely, like working at a coffeeshop the morning shift.

If you go in at 4 or 5am and you're done by 10am, you can still continue the rest of your

day and you've made a few extra bucks.

If you're really looking at the prospect of having a part-time job and thinking there's

no way I could do that, it's so exhausting.

Remember that you only have to do it for a short time.

I'm not telling you to get a part-time job and work 60 or 70 hours a week for the rest

of your life -- though that would be really good for your bank account.

What I am telling you to do is maybe commit to something for 3 or 6 months, or maybe only

a year, and it could get you out of debt, it could put $10,000 in your retirement accounts,

it could seed your vacation fund.

It really can help you afford the lifestyle you actually want if you find the salary you're

getting from your current job isn't enough to do that.

I promise, it is worth it to get up at 5am for 3 months if it means you won't have a

student loan when it's done.

The other thing I want to tell you to do is to think outside the box and get creative

with your side hustles.

There's way more opportunity out there than you might think.

When I was still in university, one of the side hustles I did was I would look on Kijiji,

which is like Craigslist, and I would try to find temp jobs that were just for one day

or two weekends, and I would do that.

And there's lots of bizarre ones on there, and usually they pay ok.

I remember I got one where I had to just scan things in a department store.

So we were doing inventory for a large department store, and had to go in two Fridays and two

Saturdays and just scan everything in the bedding department.

And I got $15 an hour to do it.

That was a really easy short-term way to make some extra money.

Another way I got creative with my side hustles, is when I was tutoring Chemistry, instead

of just doing the one-on-one tutoring, I used to hold exam review sessions on midterms and

right before finals.

And what I did for my students that I was seeing one-on-one, is I offered them, "hey,

why don't you pay me $100 for a 5 or 6 hour session on Saturday in a group.

I will teach you in a classroom setting, everything you need to know for your exam, and give you

a workbook to work through before your test."

This was awesome because I would get 10 to 15 people signing up, I would only work the

5 hours and I would make $1,500 in one day as a student.

So this was a great boon to my finances and it was just a way of being really efficient

my side hustles.

When it comes to earning extra money, I really want you to look for different ways that you

can manipulate your talents and your skills and your opportunities so they profit you

even more than they look like at the beginning.

When you are earning money from your side hustle, the most important thing is that it

goes towards your financial goal.

Don't treat your side hustle money as part of the rest of your income, and throw it in

the same pot as the other income that you earn in your chequing account.

You really want it to be separate and specific for what it's for.

One of the easiest ways to do this is to have your side hustle money deposited directly

to your savings account or whatever account you're storing it in for your financial goal.

Usually you can do this directly with an employer with your direct deposit, otherwise you just

have to be very diligent about going to the bank and putting it in the account it belongs

in.

If you start to treat your side hustle money as just extra income that can be spent on

anything, you will get used to it and that kind of leads to lifestyle inflation.

Then if that side hustle ever goes away, you'll really have a hard time down-grading your

lifestyle to adjust.

So for this reason, I want you to have a goal in mind whether it is debt repayment or savings,

and every time you get payment from your side hustle make sure 100% of it goest directly

to that goal.

I hope you guys found this video helpful.

I would love to hear what your side hustles are right now, or have been in the past.

If you have any interesting ones, share them in the comments below so other people can

get some ideas.

And before you go, please give this video a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel and

I will see you next week.

DIY Busy Board Part 5 - Duration: 9:58.

Hi everybody! I'm Mike McCrory and this is

Wood U Make It.

Today is day 5 of the busy board project

and this is going to be a challenging day

because of the amount of work.

I need to finish the assembly of the stand for the busy board

I need to do some glue ups and I need to

install some of the components that are

going to be part of the busy board.

A lot of work to do. So, let's get started!

As usual, I will start by installing a few

components on the front of the busy board.

I'll start with some wire nuts.

Each one is a different size and a different color

and I think that will be very educational

to learn about shapes and sizes and colors.

I'm using a series of drill bits.

Each one is increasing in size

as I move up the ladder

to accommodate the different sizes of the wire nuts.

I'll just use a little dab of epoxy

in each of the recesses that I've drilled.

Then I'll attach the ladder with a

little bit of epoxy as well.

Now with a little bit of epoxy on

the back of the door latch, I'll just stick that in place.

Now at the router table I have a 1/4" roundover bit installed

and I'm going around over all the edges

of the handle, both the handle piece

and the side pieces that hold it in place.

Then I'll round over the edge of the frame, as well.

I'm using 1/4" dowel in the handle

to connect everything together

so what I'm doing now is cutting some short

pieces of 5/8" dowel to serve as the caps for the 1/4" dowels.

Now the drill press I'm drilling a 1/4" hole

into the center of each of the caps and I'm going

down only about an eighth of an inch.

Now in each end of the frame I'm drilling a 1/4" hole

at the points where the side arms are going to attach to the frame.

And I'll drill the hole on the other end as well

at the same position.

Now I'm back at the front of the busy board and

I'm going to install the other door.

This is a door that's going to open up and there

will be a photo behind it.

I realized while I was drilling these holes that I

need to to get a new drill bit that's a little bit sharper.

It was a little bit tough drilling those holes.

I drilled small holes into the wood

and then I use a gimlet to make sure

that it's easy enough for the screws

to screw into the wood.

And then I'll repeat the process for the

latch to screw it into place.

Now I'm installing a couple of wall plates

for what turned out to be telephone jacks.

Originally I thought these were data jacks -- the RJ45 style --

were data jacks the rj45 style and I had

a nice RJ45 cable that I was going to

plug into this. The right length and the right color,

so I will have to make sure I go out

and get a short telephone cable for that.

Now I'm installing these oak knobs

that my father had made many many years ago.

And a brass doorknob.

Unfortunately I didn't have the camera positioned correctly,

but what I did is I used a little 1/4" dowel to

slide into the bottom of the doorknob

and that way the doorknob is turnable.

Now I'm installing one of those spring doorstops

that kids love to make noise with.

It brings back memories of my childhood

when I used to play with one of these in our bathroom.

Now I'm back at the stand and I'm going to put

everything together. I'm going to start by

inserting the dowels into the side arms.

You can see the cap on the end of the dowel now.

I've got two little blocks of wood and I'm

drilling 1/4" holes into the same position on each of the blocks

Then I'll take these back to the bottom of the frame and I'll glue those in place.

And then this little cross brace is going to fit in there with a dowel

And then the other end will attach

to the foot of the stand and will be

held in place with another dowel.

After marking the position on the other

end of the cross brace now I'm drilling

another 1/4" hole into that end.

and similarly I'm drilling a 1/4" hole

into the foot of the stand so that

the dowel can be inserted into it.

Now I'll do a quick test fit to make

sure that everything lines up, everything fits,

and the busy board itself is at the right angle.

Now I'm cutting a slot into the back

panel of the busy board so that the

cross brace of the stands can fit inside

the busy board when it's folded up.

And now I'll test it one last time

before I glue the cross brace into place.

Now I have to get the glue into the 1/4" holes

for the dowels so I'm going to use a syringe

with a little bit of wood glue

and just squirt a little bit in.

The last thing is to glue in the dowel for the cross brace

to hold it in place and I just

need to be careful that I get glue only

into the holes in the blocks.

Well, that's it for day 5 and the stand is finished.

Tomorrow I'm going to install the LED lights,

get everything else screwed in place,

and then Leo is coming over for my wife and me

to babysit, so I'm really looking forward to that.

And that'll be the completion of this project.

Wet Portraits in the Studio: Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey - Duration: 10:19.

In this video I show you how to take

some really wet portraits

in a small home studio.

Hello I'm Gavin Hoey and your watching

AdoramaTV, brought to you by Adorama the

camera store that's got everything for us

photographers and today you join me in

my small home studio, but you'll notice

it looks slightly different and I don't

just mean the fact we got some black

fabric here, I think it's probably the

black tarpaulin hanging up here and the

fact I'm standing in a paddling pool

yeah, I'm going to do a portrait that

involves splashing water. In fact we're

going to freeze the water rather than

having it blurry will do that in a later

video and to freeze the water I need flash

So I've got my StreakLight 360 in a

small Glow Softbox that would normally

be the most important part for freezing

water, but today there's one thing that's

more important even than

flash and it's this.

Today of all days you really need

to know where your towel is because this

is going to get wet and messy.

I think I should've got a bigger paddling pool,

but never mind let's get a model in, set

some lights up and we'll get shooting so

So today I've been joined in the studio by

Sam who's going to be the willing volunteer

for this shoot.

Now as you can see it's a little bit

damp around here already, because well I

told Sam what we're going to do. We've

had a little practice because you really

don't want to spring this sort of shoot on

your model, they need to be prepared,

I think and Sam's really brave to do

this I think, crazy man,

but it should be good fun.

Now in order for this to work I said

I needed flash and flash is the critical bit

for this.

The idea is I've got a streetlight 360

in a Softbox, I want that to have a very

short flash duration, the lower the power

the shorter the flash duration. Now I've

set this to 1/64 power. I find anything

under a 30 second power for the

streetlight 360 is enough to freeze the

water in midair. Now that leaves me three

things I can control;

I've got the ISO, the aperture and

shutter speed. Shutter speed really easy

flash synch speed 1/250 of a second for my

camera, ISO I'm going to shoot 400 ISO

so we're not straining the flash too

much, we can get that flash power

down. That means I need an aperture and

we can do trial and error or we could take

a meter reading, but I've already

metered this out.

I know f4 balances this up. Now that's

something called the exposure triangle, get

everything to balance and you'll get a

correct exposure. Check out the

Adorama Learning Center

for more information on that.

So we're going to have a couple of

different ways of getting water on to

Sam, but the first one is going to be

nice and simple and hopefully not too wet,

because we're going to get wetter as we go

through, so we'll start with the

technique. Make sure it works before we

really get water over Sam and I'm just going

to start by pouring water into his hand.

I say, I'm going to do it, but of course I'm not,

I've also got another Sam to help me as well, so

Sam's going to be pouring water, Sam is going to have

water poured into his hand, try and

follow along. We've set this up, I know

this works, I already metered this out.

Let's just take a little test shot, make

sure everything is ready to go.

Okay yeah, I 'm happy with that. Right, Sam

if you want to pour some water

in your own time,

lovely,

so that worked okay but

there is a couple of things we can do to make

this better, now most cameras including

this one can do high speed shooting

whether the flash can keep up is another

matter, but one of the advantages of

having the flash power down low, is not

only does it freeze water but it recycles

really quickly so I'm actually going to put

my camera into high speed shooting mode

so that's 10fps on this.

Let's pour some more water, see how we go.

Okay are you ready? Test shot first.

Okay Sam and Sam, on three, two, one.

Fantastic!

Okay so it kept up pretty well until the

bufferfield and that's fine that worked

really well we've got some great shots

in there, lots of splashing. That looks

really nice.

Now you might be wondering why I've got

the light in from behind, well the answer

is really simple.

I like the direction of light, it gives

a lot more shadow and alot more drama to

the shot also really illuminates the water,

and there's no reason why you can't

have the light at the front, it will look

different, but it could work.

The great thing about this sort of

technique is experimentation and with that

in mind we'll just take a few shots like this

and see what we get.

Okay Sam do you want to put two hands out for me?

Do you want to put a little water in there

first of all Sam? That's great.

Okay, are you ready? In your own time,

three, two, one.

So for the second set up we're going to get a little bit

wetter, I say we're going to get wetter?

Sam is going to get a little bit wetter,

sorry Sam but hopefully it should

be a much more dramatic shot because

we're going to do a portrait, now I still

got my light in the same position I 'm

just going to test the exposure.

I know roughly what's going to happen the

idea is Sam is going to lean back, so let me

just check the meter readings for there

before he leans back,

because it's kind of hard work.

I'm using my flash meter it's still on

f4, that's terrific but I'm going to

put this well out of the way. Water and

anything electrical are a bad mix.

Fortunately my camera is weather sealed,

so a little bit of splashing, that's not

going to matter too much but you will find

splashes go a long way and hopefully in

one of my pockets hidden away is a small

lens cloth, so len's cloth is really, really

useful for this shoot. If you have any

spots of water on your lens it can

really ruin the shot.

Okay we're good to go, same technique

we're going to get water poured this

time onto Sam's face by Sam. I've still got

my high speed shooting, I'm going to take

a test picture first of all.

Yes we're looking good.

Okay is everybody ready? Okay, here we go

on three. Ready, one, two, three.

Fantastic!

Now towels are a really essential

part of this shoot.

You'll also notice that Sam is wearing

black as well, because it means that,

although you will get wet, it's not going

to completely ruin it for the next shot.

If it was completely white, then it would

go transparent, but black well it's going to

have a nice shiny look and hopefully

that should add a little bit of to the shots

as we progress, getting Sam

wetter and wetter.

Speaking of which we can change the

setup ever so slightly to get a

completely different shot. I'm just going to

swing the lights around at 90 degrees,

swing Sam around at 90 degrees

and we'll do exactly the same technique.

Okay Sam are you ready?

Okay let's move things around a little bit.

So for the last setup, once again,

we have Sam in the paddling pool, once again

we got the light in, roughly the same place

as it's been for some of the other shots, but

this time there is going to be a bit more energy,

because we're literally going

to throw water in Sam's face.

Sam's going to throw water in Sam's face

and if we get this right we should get a

great splash.

Now this is where they

really exciting stuff happens, that's why

we've saved it for last, because it could

go horribly wrong. It could get really,

really wet.

Well let's just try it and find out. Now once

again, I'm going to take a test shot

first of all, so let's get this

and make sure everything is where it should be.

Okay test shot looks pretty good, right, so Sams!

Are you ready? Okay hey, here we go on three.

Ready? One, two, threee.

Fantastic!

So I'm still doing the 10 fps

and I'm starting to press the shutter

just as the water is coming in and that

gives us a nice selection of shots.

It's a good start but for portraits to

really come alive sometimes it's the

facial expression that makes all of the

difference and I don't think Sam is going to have

much trouble with this, when I say Sam

Can you give me a bit of yell?

A kind of an "Ahh"

okay Sam don't aim at his mouth,

because that would be really bad.

Okay are you ready?

Okay on three. Ready? One, two, three.

Ahhh!

Did you get that on the audio? Fantastic.

Let's just double check,

that looks excellent.

Again we've got a lovely selection of shots

absolutely brilliant.

Now water is a very unknown quantity.

You can't really plan that much for it.

Every time you do it,

t's going to be slightly different.

That means we're going to do it a few more

times, I'm so sorry Sam but when you're

wet you might as well have a few more

goes at staying wet,

by the way I should

point out the water we're throwing on Sam

is ordinary tap water but we have at least

warmed it up for him,

a little.

Okay, are you ready?

We're going do another "yelly" one,

on three ready, one, two, three.

"Ahhh!"

Well I was right about one thing we really

could have done with a bigger paddling pole

or taken this outside,

if it wasn't so freezing cold but a

little bit of water soon wipes away

no damage done.
