Military Service Leads to Bureau of Land Management Career - Duration: 2:50.

Veterans Recruitment and Appointment Act

has been and very useful for the Redding

Field Office over the last couple of years.

We have used to bring on some valuable employees.

Hi, my name is Brett Grimes and

I'm a recreation technician.

I was a infantry man in the United States Army

and I served 12 months in Afghanistan as a rifleman and assault gunner.

Initially, I got out of the military

I used the GI Bill to go to college in natural resources.

From there I got an

internship with the Forest Service and doing

projects in coordination with BLM

and then from there with the VRA, BLM was

able to hire me directly on and the

military we were taught skills like

leadership and how to work as a team

and resiliency. Because of that

BLM saw that and wanted to pick me up.

They were able to use the VRA to do so.

In recreation, especially being a

maintenance worker have an ever-changing

environment, my tasks are constantly

changing. Our recreation areas and cleaning

trail heads which is the face of BLM

which the public sees on a daily basis.

I keep it safe and friendly and make

sure these are clean when people come through and

be able to enjoy the environment out here and it's

awesome sites as well as the we have over

a hundred miles of trail. We are constantly

maintaining that when you have hiking

trails, mountain biking trails, things like that.

Doing maintence on trails can make sure

the water to drain off of them.

Taking fallen trees down, bucking those ups

dispersing it, creating a habitat for animals.

It's nice to have the public come and see what we actually do

and be able to take part in it as well

as a youth with the our partnership

with the Forest Service and the YCC.

The Youth Conservation Corps having them come out

here and really see what we do and what takes part.

Currently I'm working with them with the

AmeriCorps crew right now. The eight

young college graduates that have been

out here trying to learn the different

aspects of the Bureau of Land Management when it

comes to forestry, natural resources,

conservation, we've been out here working

on trails as well as a teaching them skills

mending fences and rangeland. We also

planned out different recreation areas

as well as a off-highway vehicle areas.
