Volkswagen Golf 2017 review - Duration: 8:19.

Good morning. We're on Majorca.

We're going to drive the new Golf.

There was a discussion about the new Golf, because you said there were very little differences.

You said in the comments you don't see the difference. I get that.

There are no major differences on the outside, but let me show you something.

The headlights, bumpers, and front wheel arches are a bit different.

Truly. But there is a lot to tell, so... I'm going to teach you about Majorca today.

Now we're here, I'm going to give you some useful facts.

The looks aren't revolutionary.

This doesn't mean it's not interesting. The Golf is an extremely important car; for the Dutch market too.

It's one of the best selling cars.

There is new technology for the engines, safety, and infotainment.

We're going to talk about it extensively.

We're at BCM, the nightclub of Majorca, where they have the biggest foam gun in the world.

That's useful information. Speaking of foam guns, this car has a spare wheel.

However, if you take it out for more storage space, you just bring a tire repair kit with foam.

Let's keep going. Let's start with what is closest to us: the interior.

First, I have an Active Info Display in front of me, which we know as Virtual Cockpit with Audi.

It was already available in the Passat, but now it's in the new Golf as well.

You'll have a fully digital instrument cluster with different views.

I like the map navigation right in front of you, allowing you to see everything instantly.

I like that. Another interior thing: all touchscreens are bigger.

The biggest one available is over 20 cm. That's big. We have it here.

Nowadays, some editions can be operated with gesture control, but it's limited.

It's limited to swiping to and fro in a menu to play the next song in the media browser.

It's not very elaborate. It's not like the BMW 5 or 7-Series.

It's only 15˚C, Martijn.

15˚C is cold for Majorca this time of year.

The average temperature on Majorca is 21˚C.

That's a fun fact. Also, in 2002... Speaking of the number 21...

Volkswagen sold the 21 millionth Golf that year, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle.

Another important thing to tell about the Volkswagen Golf is that the engines have changed.

There are many new engines and all the existing engines that are continued got power upgrades.

It's too much to list everything, but in short: 84 hp for the base model up to 306 hp for the Golf R.

More importantly, there's a new base model: a 84 hp 1.0 TSI with 3 cylinders.

Another new engine is the 1.5 4-cylinder engine available with 128 or 148 hp.

They put a lot of new technology in there. It has a variable turbo geometry and cylinder deactivation.

A supermarket.

We brought the 1.5 to be able to tell more about it today.

This is a 1.5 with 148 hp and 250 Nm (184 lb ft) torque.

I was afraid it wouldn't be a very exciting engine, but I'm pleasantly surprised.

It has a wide torque curve, so it pulls well.

It feels rather quick. This one has a MT, so I'm missing out on the new developments.

Still, it doesn't disappoint. It's a nice engine; a nice addition to the Volkswagen engine lineup.

Behind me is Platja Es Trenc, one of the prettiest beaches of Majorca.

Every year, 25,000 cubic meters of sand disappears

because people take it with them in their towels, hair, clothing, bags, etc.

That's about 15,500 trunks of the Golf Variant.

The handling... It's a new Golf, so don't expect sports-car roadholding.

It's good, though. We liked the previous Volkswagen Golf as well, built on the MQB platform.

The handling is OK. It's not a bad handling car.

About the new safety systems, or rather the driving aids that are partially safety systems...

First, new in this segment, it has a Traffic Jam Assist. This means the car can drive itself in traffic jams.

It operates the throttle, brakes, and keeps its lane.

Of course, it asks you to touch the steering wheel sometimes, but OK.

It also brakes automatically for pedestrians and vehicles in the city.

It used to be for vehicles only below 50 kph (31 mph), but it brakes for pedestrians as well now.

That's a nice additional bit of safety.

Every year, 10,000 cyclists visit Majorca. Especially racing cyclists go here to improve their stamina.

Up to professional teams. That's a nice bridge to this Golf Variant, because it comes with roof rails.

It'll be easy to put bicycles on there, or you put them in the trunk because there's plenty of space.

Do you have to run to the dealer to order a new Golf when you already drive one?

Maybe not, but it's a nice upgrade and the new engines are interesting.

The standard trim levels return, being the Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline.

That's great. Of course there are other packages.

The base model has more features than before, but the prices stay more or less the same. That's nice.

Let's end with some nice facts, because we've been giving you facts all day.

Maybe it'll be nice to tell more about the Golf.

Up to 2016, over 33 million have been built. Did you know?

In 2003 a driver with a Golf 1 drove 1 million km (620,000 miles).

I think up to 2003. I can't imagine him doing that in 1 year.

Volkswagen needed 730 days in total to build 1 million Golfs after introducing the first one.
