Ask a Designer: Michele De Lucchi on Italian style - Duration: 5:09.

Michele de Lucchi and his iconic lamp ''Tolomeo.''

The Milanese designer and architect created this classic in 1987.

It's been a best seller ever since.

Since the late 1970s, Lucchi has designed many objects, including lamps, chairs, tables

and household appliances, but the Tolomeo was his one iconic piece.

"The designer or architect cannot determine whether a design becomes icon or not, that

depends on other things."

Like the trends of the times, ((the Zeitgeist)).

In the 1980s, De Lucchi co-founded the rebellious Milan-based design group "Memphis".

Some of his Memphis designs are still on display in his office.

"We wanted to create something new, with new shapes, and new colors.

Most importantly, we wanted to provoke people with the decor and with ironic shapes.

We wanted to create a more diverse aesthetic.

That was the goal of Memphis."

In this Milan palazzo, de Lucchi works with his team on various international projects.

His Palace of Justice in Batumi, Georgia, was finished in 2011.

He wants his buildings to have symbolic significance.

The Bridge of Peace in the capital Tbilisi, became an emblem for the new Georgia.

De Lucchi designed the entrance pavillon for the 2015 Milan World's Fair, featuring wood

and organic shapes.

Eye-catching but not too showy.

That's also his principle for Milan's latest temple of culture, the UniCredit Pavillon,

which he designed in the shape of a seed.

''I really liked the idea of placing a wooden seed into this surrounding of glass, steel

and concrete.

It shows that fertility is an essential part of nature.

Building for community living, a meeting place... that could be the seed for a better future.''

De Lucchi draws his designs by hand.

He's fascinated by the sense of touch, and makes objects made of wood in his free time.

These designs have already become works of art.

At this exhibition in a gallery in Milan, the maestro's hand-made pieces sell for 12,000

euros each.

"These are

basically models, because I'm an architect.

But some view them as sculptures - detached from their function -- and that's fine by

me.

"

Recently, De Lucchi has enjoyed success as an interior designer.

He designed a fast food restaurant on the famed Piazzo del Duomo in Milan.

The golden olive tree symbolizes a connection to nature.

De Lucchi's converted gas stations was opened in the Fall of 2017.

Garage Italia represents the Italian automobile culture.

The first floor houses a gourmet restaurant, and the ground floor a spacious espresso bar.

It quickly became one of the hottest meeting spots in the area.

"I can't design anything unless I can think up a story that gives the building a meaningful

purpose.

It would hurt me if the people who use my buildings or live in them saw them as a nuisance

or annoyance.

Michele de Lucchi's current bestselling design is the espresso maker ''La Pulcina''.

It's certainly striking, and coffee connoisseurs like it, too.

Hawaii may ban sunscreen harmful to marine life - Duration: 0:53.

Hawaii may become the first state to ban sunscreens that contain certain chemicals known to be

harmful to ocean ecosystems.

State lawmakers passed a bill Tuesday that would prohibit the sale of sunscreens containing

oxybenzone or octinoxate in the Aloha State.

Prescription sunscreens containing these chemicals wouldn't be affected.

The bill says in part that the two chemicals have been found to "cause genetic damage to

coral and other marine organisms."

When people go swimming, some of the sunscreen they've lathered on washes off.

A scientific paper published in 2015 estimated as much as 14,000 tons of sunscreen gets released

into coral reefs each year this way.

The state of Hawaii is surrounded by about 410,000 acres of coral reef.

Hawaii's governor still needs to sign the bill before it becomes law.

If signed, the law would take effect Jan. 1, 2021.

Spontaneous Alien Life - Duration: 3:55.

When contemplating astrobiology and the broad idea of consciousness in the universe there

are really two ways to think about it.

The first is the standard view of life arising on a world through chemistry and then evolution

taking over and allowing, or not allowing, life to move towards complexity.

But there actually is another option for the genesis of life, or consciousness to arise

independently of evolution or even biochemistry.

The factors that define this hypothetical alternate option for life are time and the

size of the universe rather than biochemistry.

Unfortunately, we don't actually know how big the universe really is.

We may never be able to know.

We can only know about the observable universe, that which is close enough for us to see.

But that's not all of it, some fraction of the universe is simply too far away to

be seen.

We don't know how large of a fraction that is.

There comes a point where there is simply too much expanding space between you and another

part of the universe to allow for light traveling at a finite speed to ever reach you.

So how much of the universe lies beyond our view?

We have no idea.

It could be a small amount, a large amount, or even infinity.

The latter has huge ramifications.

If infinite, all possible things will eventually happen, including nearly exact copies of earth

and us, think infinite earths and infinite you varying in minor details.

But what's particularly relevant here is that the more universe you have, and the more

time you have, the odds for chance occurrences rises.

In an infinite universe, chance occurrences are bound to happen, including life arising

from spontaneous arrangements of atoms rather than from a chemical process.

In other words, by pure chance, a bacterium could appear from nothing.

Or more.

This idea relates to a thought experiment known as a Boltzmann brain, first advanced

by physicist Ludwig Boltzmann in 1896.

He suggested that if you wait a long enough time, and I mean a seriously long time, far

longer than the current age of the universe, eventually by sheer chance atoms could assemble

into a conscious brain, either aware or completely unaware of the universe around it.

This scales up.

Again, with enough time in an infinite universe, a giant superintelligent supercomputer, complete

with a power source, could spontaneously occur and start thinking in the same way that if

you have a group of monkeys typing on typewriters, given enough time one of them will type out

the complete works of Shakespeare perfectly.

It may take trillions of years, but it will, purely by chance, eventually happen.

But, time is a tricky thing in that we don't know how much time is left for this universe.

Some think that the proton will eventually decay, if so there may not be enough time

for a boltzmann brain scenario to occur in a finite universe.

Then again, in an infinite universe, it may well already have occured, or even must have

occured.

The implications of an infinite universe is probably the most mind-boggling thing that

I know of, and while this is entirely sci fi speculation on my part, I wonder if a boltzmann

brain supercomputer is out there somewhere in infinity that came into existence already

simulating a universe of its own, complete with consciousnesses existing within it in

a simulated reality.

Forever cosmic fever dreams wholly unaware of their true nature.

we got a crazy busy day today today today today let's start with the tea

little cold this morning we got to quickly make our way out to holy-o's

that's better looks good you sprayed some coating on there I guess some rust

proofing and then he welded like another piece on there so that's nice and clean

sitting around 12:30 we're gonna make some lunch we're thinking like a little

lettuce wrap or something like that and then we're actually gonna start on maybe

firing some holes into the roof of the van

we'll see 14 by 14 I'll break my ankle and then double-check before we you

start cutting holes into your van and it's super important that you understand

the overall layout that you're gonna use on there if you're living in a van every

single inch is prime real estate so you want to get creative with your design

maximize your space so we're gonna figure out what size panels we're

getting we haven't actually ordered those yet and then kind of make

templates on how we're gonna lay out the panels and where we're gonna put the

fans and then hopefully even leave extra room just in case down the road you want

to add you know a little roof rack or you know a little bench to sit by the

park and watch the stars that's a good idea

this has been like a super inconsistent vlog I'm sorry cuz just going back and

forth at least it feels that way I don't know how it's gonna end up got a call

from a mechanic the Nissan specs car the old car that we still have for the

business is available it was at the mechanic shop so I gotta go pick that up

and we've got one whole cut when we get back we're gonna do the other hole what

is going to be 14 inches square mm-hmm so we need to make a cardboard template

so we can just line it up properly mark it out a hole too easy you did great

work there bub you gotta make sure you double-check these old guys where we put

the last man on our belt it's a great locations right above the kitchen and

I've got the 14 by 14 template so first thing I'm gonna do is lay it there and

then mask the area around the template so that's roughly where it's gonna go

and then I'm gonna just line this under here now that we've got the what's the

point of the masking tape not sure what the point of the masking tape is my dad

told me to do it so it's easier to file I don't think he even knows why they

were doing it but we're doing it that way

I want you in the Sun my good now no I mean I'm in the Sun no I can't see very

well so the tools you'll need to get that hole there are a drill with a hole

which is called whole bit whole song you need a tool that will make a hole you

want to make sure that hole is big enough for the blade that you're going

to use in there so salt would be a smaller blade I don't have a jigsaw this

will work as well saws are retractable saw and a pair of squash goggles let's

do this come up onto the ladder you film it you'll get a good shot here we got no

wires underneath there right I don't think so

the both of us and giving a man free reign to do this project with his dad

which is a lot of fun they bicker like best friends which i think means they

really are best friends anyways back to the cutting holes in the ceiling and

stuff yeah we got our beautiful skylights here you're looking good

you're gonna have the metal edges so just to protect it I'm sure there's a

more professional win to it but I've got a paintbrush here a paint marker I mean

and I'm just gonna paint over the metal just a little extra precaution to help

rust-proof it I guess but that's all I'm doing

installation we are going to take these suckers up because it's calling for rain

yeah I mean obviously we had the fans we need putting those in but we don't so

we're just gonna cover them up and I wanted to cut the holes because you know

you got to keep the ball rolling that's kind of a pain in the butt but I got to

Soft Chocolate Cookies - Subway Style Cookies - Duration: 4:36.

Welcome back to Cooking with Sheepy

Today we are going to do

One of my favorite desserts

Soft Cookies with Chocolate Chips

Just like Subway Cookies

These cookies are delicious and special for a dinner with a glass of milk

Or a little snack

To bake these wonderful cookies we will need:

2 1/2 cup Flour

1 cup Butter

1 cup Brown Sugar

1/2 cup White Sugar

2 Eggs

2 tablespoon Vanilla Flavor

1/2 teaspoon Salt

1 teaspoon Baking Soda

Some Chocolate Chips

First, we're going to heat the butter

in the microwave for 3 min

Then we'll mix into a bowl

Brown and White sugar

with the melted Butter and Eggs

In another bowl

We are going to mix Flour with Salt and Baking Soda

Once we have ready the Flour

We mix it with the other one

And for the final step

We will add the Chocolate Chips

Now we place the mix on a wax paper

And let it freeze for 2 or 3 hours

Be patient!

When the cookies mix have freezed

Cut it into medium slices

And place them on a tray

Then, we are going to put it into an oven

at 350 Farenheit of temp

And now!

Here we have

Our amazing cookies!

Tips for Installing Big Doors on a Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Style Home Build - Duration: 2:48.

You're watching MVTV and today we're bringing you into the field with the art of construction,

looking at some of our favorite window and door projects.

So, this glass is a huge pain if you have a little scratch in it.

This is standard on Andersen, their competitors it's a big up charge to get protective film.

The labeling each, panel tells you where it belongs when you install it.

So this sticker is a big deal, with a picture, not just "panel 2 of 4". What's panel 2 of 4 mean?

We got 12 panels on this job that came in a big crate. So you have 2 of 4 of S31

so now you know the location in the house, and that helps with the whole ease of installation.

I took footage while we were installing it too of how they came in and we have Gunther

operating it right off the bat before any of this floor.

So as far as the seamless transition, Wendy's asking, "How's this going to look

when it's done?" She didn't ask how it looks on the inside. Last time she came

she would have asked that. "Why is there this big step here?", because it was

all designed for the wood to flush out. So now you don't ask that because it just

makes sense, but she's going to ask "what's this out here?" Well this is going

to get built up to be right below here. So, the grading, which way do you want

water to go? Away from the structure, right? And how do you keep from

having water come into your structure? Don't let it get there. Have a big overhang.

A front dam is what we call versus a back dam.

So, on the threshold or the bottom of the door is a dam

that allows the water to hit the system and roll away.

The best way to have a seamless inside to outside is to have a

front dam, a big overhang, so water is way out there at the pool and can't even get in here.

So, that's the construction talk of all of these things to where it all gets

built up and you're kind of seeing it in in action here.

We're gonna be talking tonight about the lifestyle vlogger

template from Wix.com. This is a great template for anyone who wants to produce

their own shows, who wants to become a vlogger, which is, if you don't know what

that is, it's a combination of the word video and blogger so instead of writing

blogs, it's someone who just takes out their camera and they just show their

life and they share their passions and their interests. This is a really hot

item right now on Youtube so if you even were thinking about being a vlogger or

anything like that, check out this website template from Wix.com. I will

show you the template itself we'll do a quick walk-through and then I'll show you

how to customize it for your own channel So, if that sounds great,

go ahead and stay tuned guys, let's get started...

Once again, I'm Michael Wood with Captivatim Multimedia and Web Design.

We're gonna be looking at the lifestyle vlogger template from Wix.com. Let's go

ahead and take a quick tour around the template itself. So here's the website.

Obviously at the top you would have YOUR name, again, these are made to be

customized, so obviously you're not Emily Silver. You would put your name here

instead. It's got a link so if I click on that, it actually will go right

to the home page, or if I tend to stray away, there's always a way to come back

home. So the Emily Silver is the home button. It's got a very simple menu and

really what I like about this is it showcases the videos. You know, that's

what a lifestyle vlogger does. They make content. The whole idea of this

template is to leverage the power of Wix in the Wix backend and the Wix

editor, so that you only have to worry about making video content and uploading

it. Once you build your site into this template, the website will just run

itself. That's one of the great things I love. This uses the Wix video

management system. If you want to know more about that, check us out at the

Webmaster Academy I do a whole series on just the Wix video backend, but I'll give

you a quick tour here. There's really two ways you could do this. You can use

your videos, you can upload them to YouTube or Vimeo, and you would just add

those videos to the playlist or you can actually upload your videos to Wix.com

and let Wix handle the management of your videos. What's nice about that

way is then your videos are secure and there's no advertising. In fact if you

wanted to take the next step, you can actually charge people to watch your

channel. Especially if you're a consultant or a coach.

You can actually put a payment wall in front of your videos. I won't talk about

that on this episode, because this template is not a paid video template.

I just wanted you to be aware of some of the possibilities that are out

there. So here we have the main video that's got text laid over the top so you

would go ahead and put whatever text is appropriate to your channel and you can

just click watch now so it's a full-screen image and when I click on

watch now, you get this light box that opens up. It gives you some basic

statistics over here on the right and if I play the video,

Okay so you may not have heard all the music because I have the computer sound

off, but you might have heard a little bit...it'll go ahead

and play the video. You obviously want to put your best video front and center and

so your latest and greatest can go right here on the cover. Or maybe an

introduction video, if you're new to vlogging. The other interesting feature

is down here on the bottom right, they have this "chat with us" box if I click on

this arrow, it comes up, and you could type in a message. Now if you're out

there vlogging cuz you're hanging off a cliff somewhere and you're doing a

selfie, you can't answer this little chat box, right? So part of it is this kind of this

Robo chat So there's automated responses that you

can plug in and especially frequently ask questions and it will

respond the best it can. But you will get those messages in your email so you

could always respond to these messages remotely. You don't have to be in front

of your computer to actually interact with your audience and it's that

immediacy, that's really getting a lot of leads in modern websites. So the chat box

is already built in for you. I'm going to scroll down and it has this a

little bit a paragraph about you. You can click on "read more" and that jumps to the

"about page" where you'll have a picture of yourself. a little paragraph about who

you are, and contact information. I like this, that they put in

the business inquiries and public relations management. I like that because

they already thought about those kind of things. You may not have thought of

writing down business inquiry information, but there you go. They

already thought it out. You just have to change the information. Let's go back to

the home page so when I click on read more that goes to about now here's the

most important part it's the vlog right and what's

interesting is you could take your videos and you can actually sort

them into different playlists you can do this on YouTube as well I just like the

power to be able to make that playlist a little bit more of a showcase now you

might wonder why do you need a website if you're already on YouTube well they

really go hand-in-hand you always want to have some kind of headquarters for

people to go to where they can find the latest information YouTube is part of

the equation you really want both and there's no reason why you can't do both

in fact you can link your YouTube videos right into the Wix video manager you

don't have to use Wix hosting for the videos at least so here we have a

playlist of selected videos and it's got a very sleek navigation menu here

that'll go through the different whatever you have on your playlist and

then there's another playlist here so you could take your major ideas and

build them out right here and then it has an Instagram feed so what's nice

about this is you can go ahead and post all your videos and images on Instagram

and once you link your account these photos will automatically populate your

website so you could just be out there on your phone taking videos posting in

to Instagram and your website is handling everything in the background

it's that automation that really makes a huge difference in running your business

down at the bottom it has a subscribe area so what happens if somebody types

in their email address Wix will collect those emails and then you'll have a lead

list and from that list you can export that to your own email provider or you

can use Wix shout outs and send out newsletters to your lead list so your

website's automatically collecting those leads for you all right

so that's really it's really quite a simple site the home page which is a

very long a scrolling page the vlog that just

basically jumped down to that part of the homepage and then the about page I

mean what more do you mean on your site it's all about you and your videos and

your passion don't forget that of course you have your social media icons up here

in the top right and make sure you put icons for accounts you're actually

updating so if you don't have a Twitter account you can delete that Twitter logo

and you can add logos as well and of course the YouTube logo was right there

so if you're really on YouTube a lot people have that direct connection to

you and you could put this website domain on every video you do on YouTube

go ahead and put it in the comment section then that way people can follow

you they can get on your email list and that's how you start building your

audience all right before I get under the hood and look at the customization

options I just want to check the chat does anybody have any questions at this

time all right so far so good and if you are watching the replay remember you

could always add a question and I'll get back to you as soon as I can all right

let's go under the hood now I'm now in the Wix editor so when I click on this

image as you see the video goes beyond the menu when I scroll down you see how

the menu is kind of static it's got this thumbtack pushed in right here that

means the menus pinned to the screen so when I scroll down the menu is always

present right there now if I click on the image it's actually a still shot of

a video so I would have to go and manage my videos this uses uses the Wix video

manager on the back end so it's a simple matter of uploading your videos sending

in the links to all your YouTube videos and

the video playlist will automatically update and what's interesting is some of

these videos you can actually get people to read them so if you have some really

important consultation or a sales seminar or something you can get people

to buy so what I would do is if I clicked on add videos and I want you to

pay attention to this menu on the right when I say add videos look at the

options you can upload a video from your computer you can use a link from Dropbox

or Google Drive or you could add a link from YouTube Vimeo and now you can add a

link from Facebook so if you're already on those platforms your website will

just simply have a little handshake with those accounts and you'll be able to

update the videos pretty easy okay then it has a live stream button which hey I

should play with one of these someday I haven't really tried the live stream

button but here we could schedule a live stream and we're gonna live stream from

our Wix app on our phone and this will stream to your Wix video channel so all

you need to make that happen is the Wix app in the iOS store you can go ahead

and schedule when you go live and then put all the information here and that's

going to livestream directly on your website

hey I'm I think I might try that the other thing you have in the video

manager is the channels section so what you do is you really build this out by

adding channels you can do a straight out YouTube feed or you can build a

channel and everything you add to that channel you can then use to sort out the

videos that go on your website so on the cover this is basically if I click on

settings its C as you see it change to the pirate flag because it's switched

channels so on this front cover I have to actually go and choose which channel

I want displayed I could choose a video so these are some different I can either

choose a channel or I could choose a single video that have already been

uploaded to Wix or I've provided a link ahead of time so you have to start with

the Wix manager then you use that to go ahead and build out your site okay you

could always change the layout I wouldn't mess with that too much but I

just wanted you to see that there are possibilities with the layout whether

you show the title or not how many thumbnails what happens on people hover

the mouse over cut there's customizations like that

alright so that's how you change the cover and you could have people

subscribe the text is this simply double click and you can change the font and

the text right here and then the vlog itself so this is where you would go

ahead and manage videos again click on settings and here I can collect I can

click on or select a list of videos or a channel so it's really all about

building that channel ahead of time so then you could customize your website

and then when you make a video and upload it to Wix you would simply say

what kind of video you made like what channel should it be on and then that

will automatically populate your playlist that's on the home page the

Instagram account this is a mat of clicking on this box here and you

click on settings and this is where you would add your Instagram feed just

customize you can even add links and it will then display only the images from

your Instagram account you can customize the look and feel of the site this

obviously is like a pink and a white goes along with em Emily Silver's vision

this is a strip right here so we can just change the strip background to a

different color you could even change the palate just click on change and you

could see a list of color palettes over here on the right or you can customize

your palette by clicking each of these circles and typing in the hex code or

finding the color in the palette right there so you could change the site

colors you could change the the strip by just selecting a color

seong going to select purple for example and that changes the color of the strip

you can also use an image just depends on the look and feel of your website so

that's a strip right there and same with this pink background so this pink is

actually the page background so if we change our page background let's go

ahead and now let me put a video so then you could see exactly where the pages

let's do a preview so do you see the circles moving around so that tells you

where the page lives some designers like to put that in the background just so

they don't get confused between the strips like this big Instagram this wide

pink strip and they don't get that confused with the background and then

they'll change it back to the same color when they're finished so do you see the

background right there in fact if you like the scrolling video obviously you

could leave it it's kind of a nice effect and again all I had to do is just

let's go back to the editor I just had to change the background just click

anywhere on the page and change page background and I'll change it to black

just so you could see the difference and so now you could see the different parts

of the page now the way they designed this particular template they use the

same background color as they did on the strips so then that way the background

of the website blended perfectly with the strips as you see right here and

it's now a seamless experience see right there as I scroll you don't even see the

page background so that's a little bit of the behind-the-scenes magic and I

showed you how you could change your colors on your site so at this time let
