about five foods which cause cancer. Cancer is a group of diseases

characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. If the spread

is not controlled, it might lead to death. Globally, 8.2 million people died due to

cancer in 2012 and the numbers increased to 8.8 million in 2015.

As per WHO reports, globally one out of six deaths is due to cancer

and in two decades the number of new cancer cases are expected to rise by 70%

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in females and lung cancer

is the leading cause of cancer deaths in males. According to a global survey done

in 2012, to find the countries which are having maximum rate of cancer cases, top

five countries are Denmark France Australia Belgium and Norway with

America at sixth position in the list. But the good news is 30 to 50 percent of

cancer risks can be reduced just by healthy lifestyle which includes

reducing tobacco and alcohol consumption to the maximum extent possible, removing

carcinogens from your daily plate and increasing physical activity. Major risk

of cancer comes from tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diet and physical

inactivity. So what is this unhealthy diet? Let us list on five foods which

increase the risk of cancer in our body but we probably don't know about them

and keep on eating them. First is processed meat. The meat which comes to

us after being processed by food industry contains many chemicals and

preservatives including sodium nitrate to make it look fresh tasty and keep it

for long. But these are actually carcinogens, which is a substance that

can cause cancer in our body, by promoting carcinogenesis. Carcinogens may

increase the risk of cancer by altering cellular metabolism or damaging the DNA

directly in the cells. Second in the list is microwave popcorn.

Lot of people like having popcorn while watching movies or playing indoor games.

But if they are heated in microwave, they actually become very harmful. Microwave

popcorn backs are lined with a chemical PFOA of perfluorooctanoic acid which

significantly increases the risk of several types of cancer. Third is

potato chips. We all like having those crispy chips available in market don't

we? But they are really harmful in several aspects due to high levels of

sodium and trans fat. Talking specifically about cancer, when they are

fried in high temperature, a chemical called Acrylamide is made which is a

carcinogen. Fourth is red meat, which is generally made of beef, pork and lamb.

Though it is not as harmful as processed meat, researches have shown that eating

red meat increases risks of colorectal, pancreatic and prostate cancer.

Fifth in the list is hydrogenated oils. Most of the oils we consume today are

hydrogenated oils. They contain trans fat and high amount of omega-6 fatty acids.

Hence, increase the risk of cancer. Our body needs a good balance of omega-3 and

omega-6. And Omega 6 is only required by the body in very little amount.

But in today's diet, due to advancement in technologies corn oil, vegetable oil

soybean oil, sunflower oil etc. are processed and their consumption

creates huge imbalance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in our body. Also, the

trans fats found in these oils are so harmful that many countries have started

to take actions and make laws to control it. One rumor we often hear about artificial

sweetener aspartame is that it is cancerous but it is completely safe for

consumption, except for people with phenylketonuria or PKU.

So now, that you have the list of five most cancerous foods, please make sure

you eliminate or control the intake of such foods to the recommended level.

Other than these, please control the tobacco and alcohol intake as both of

them are grade one carcinogens. Also increase the physical activities to
